CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
1.1. General
Myanmar lies in earthquake prone region of the world and most of the cities in
the country are located in high seismic regions. It is necessary to pay special attention
of the effect of earthquake in designing the high rise building. There is growing
responsiveness of multi-stored reinforced concrete structures, to accommodate growing
population. It is the need to accomplish some function, one of them is to receive loads
(service loads) at certain points & transmit them safely to other points. Many structures
are built of reinforced concrete: bridges, viaducts, buildings, retaining walls, tunnels,
tanks, conduits, and others. This deals primarily with fundamental principles in the
design and investigation of reinforced concrete members subjected to axial force,
bending moment, shear, torsion, or combinations of these. Thus, these principles are
basically applicable to the design of any type of structure, so long as information is
known about the variation of axial force, shear moment, etc., along the length of each
member. To analyze and design the multistory building we must analyze and design the
elements that combined it, such slabs, beams, columns and footing.
To obtain safe design, maximum portable values of loads is established before
the design process is proceed, Nowadays, almost all of the design, analysis and
calculation are done by using computer program. In this study, the proposed building
is analyzed by using ETABS software.
1.2. Objectives of the Study
The objectives of this study are as follows:
1. To analyze and design of superstructure of proposed building for a structural
stability by static analysis,
2. To design substructure of building foundation by SAFE 2016
3. To understand the behavior of reinforced concrete building under seismic load,
4. To resist the gravity loading from the weight of the building and its content and
5. To get better knowledge and skill of computer-aided analysis and design

1.3. Scopes of the Study

In this study, 5-storeyed residential building is considered. The building locates

in seismic zone II is considered as proposed models. ETABS software is used in design
and analysis of R.C frame. Based on ASCE 7-05 earthquake loads and wind loads are
considered. Structural elements are designed according to ACI 318-99. The
superstructure of a building will be designed by using static analysis. For the structural
stability of the building, resistance to sliding, overturning effect, storey drift, torsional
irregularity and P-delta effect are checked.

1.4. Outline of the Study

This study includes five chapters. Chapter one consists of introduction of this
study. Chapter two presents literature review on static analysis. Chapter three includes
the analysis and design of 5-storeyed reinforced building. Chapter four includes design
calculation. And the last chapter, chapter five includes discussion, conclusions and
recommendations. The finding of the study is described.
