HOMEWORK PROJECT # 1
(Due by 10:00 am Wednesday, May 22, 2024)
******Submit the 2 SIMIO files and the report (word file) to the e-learning******
Introduction
This assignment will utilize several chapters. Put all answers to questions in one-word document
named LastNameHwProjectS24.docx. It should be separated in parts and include your names. Be sure
your SIMIO models identify all the authors.
Part 1: Workcell (30 points)
Three types of parts are processed at a workcell with three machine typed. The three machine types are
all different and the parts are processed on the machines in different ways. All three parts arrive at the
same point in the cell and leave from the cell at another point. A rough layout of the workcell is shown
below:
Parts travel at 2 miles per hour. The distances (in meters) between the various locations are shown in
the following table:
Location Entrance Machine 1 Machine 2 Machine 3 Exit
Entrance N/A 60 25 120 N/A
Machine 1 20 N/A 20 25 60
Machine 2 40 25 N/A 40 60
Machine 3 50 40 30 N/A 30
Exit N/A 150 25 60 N/A
Parts of type 1 arrive in a Poisson stream with a mean arrival rate of 3.5 arrivals per hour. Parts of type
2 arrive every 60 minutes and come in batches of 3 (but are individual once they arrive). Parts of type
3 have a Uniform(11,13) minutes interarrival time. Part types follow individual sequences through the
machine types as follows:
Part type 1: Machine 2, Machine 1, Machine 3
Part type 2: Machine 1, Machine 3, Machine 2
Part type 3: Machine 1, Machine 2, Machine 1, Machine 3, Machine 2
Machines 2 and 3 have a capacity of 2 for the first four hours, then a capacity of 3 for the second four
hours, and finally a capacity of 2 for the third four hours. This schedule then repeats itself for each
successive 12 hours.
Processing time on each of the machine types are described by: Pert(5, 6, 9) minutes for Machine type
1, Pert(6, 8, 11) minutes for Machine type 2, and Pert(9, 11, 14) minutes for Machine type 3.
Step 1: Construct a simulation of this work cell. (Hint: start your work schedule at the same time as
your simulation and make sure your work schedule covers 24 hours).
Step 2: Color the three part types and use the animation to verify that you model is simulating the
sequences properly.
Step 3: We want to collect statistics for 40 hours of simulation in our experiment. This is a “steady-
state” simulation and thus we will make the run length 44 hours and use a “Warmup Period” of 4 hours
(this means that after the first 4 hours the statistics are cleared). Steady-state simulations have no
“natural” opening or closings – here our “opening” is arbitrarily “empty of entities and all
servers/resources are idle.”
Step 4: Run 10 replications of your simulation to produce final statistics.
Question 1: What is the 95% confidence interval for the cycle time for parts, the scheduled capacity
utilization for each machine type, and the waiting times at each machine type?
Question 2: Based on what you observed (in your animation) and what you learn (from the statistics),
what changes might be considered to improve the performance of this workcell?
Put your answers into the .doc file you are submitting and submit your final model as
“ProjectS24p1.spfx”
Part 2: Embellishment to Part 1 (10 points)
The movement of parts was included in Part 1, but there was no material handling mechanisms. In
particular, parts never had to compete for material handling going from one station to another.
Using the model you developed for Part 1, consider the following changes. The movement of parts
from entrance to each machine type is done by three accumulating conveyors, one going to each of the
machine centers. The conveyor speed is one foot per second.
The movement of parts throughout the rest of the work cell depends on the availability of two fork
trucks. Each fork truck can carry only one part and moves at one mile per hour. The fork truck uses
the exit location as “home,” although they will remain at the node they finished serving if there is no
other need for their service.
Question 1: Based on 10 replications each having 44 simulated hours, which include a four hour warm-
up, what is the 95% confidence interval for the cycle time for parts, the scheduled capacity utilization
for each machine type, scheduled utilization of the fork trucks, the utilization of the conveyors, and the
waiting times at each machine type?
Question 2: Based on what you observed (in your animation) and what you learn (from the statistics),
what changes might be considered to improve the performance of this workcell?
Put your answers into the .doc file you are submitting and submit your final model as
“ProjectS24p2.spfx”.
