You Can Study Only When You Are Steady
You Can Study Only When You Are Steady
The following is humble effort to transcribe one of the nectarean class given by our beloved spiritual master HH
Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Bhagavad Gita verse 4.34-35, in Sri Sri Radha Neel Madhav dham, Rajkot on 3rd
October 2009. Now we shall hear from Gurudev
Gurudev: This is black salt. You should always keep black salt. And whenever there is cough, you put it in your mouth
every few minutes and it will subside. You will not require any medicine. Don’t take antibiotics. Just use salt.
Gurudev: And we know these. This is the direct connection to Kṛṣṇa. Because there is no difference between His voice
and Himself. It’s all same. He doesn’t require anything. He is all in all and everywhere. So this is the clue. We have to
be very particular to understand this verse through Prabhupada’s excellent purports.
Gurudev chants Bhagavad Gita verse 4.34 very beautifully word by word and devotees repeat:
Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render
service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the
truth.
Purport: The path of spiritual realization is undoubtedly difficult. The Lord therefore advises us to approach a bona fide
spiritual master in the line of disciplic succession from the Lord Himself. No one can be a bona fide spiritual master
without following this principle of disciplic succession. The Lord is the original spiritual master, and a person in the
disciplic succession can convey the message of the Lord as it is to his disciple. No one can be spiritually realized by
manufacturing his own process, as is the fashion of the foolish pretenders. The Bhāgavatam (6.3.19) says, dharmaṁ tu
sākṣād bhagavat-praṇītam: the path of religion is directly enunciated by the Lord. Therefore, mental speculation or dry
arguments cannot help lead one to the right path. Nor by independent study of books of knowledge can one progress
in spiritual life. One has to approach a bona fide spiritual master to receive the knowledge. Such a spiritual master
should be accepted in full surrender, and one should serve the spiritual master like a menial servant, without false
prestige. Satisfaction of the self-realized spiritual master is the secret of advancement in spiritual life. Inquiries and
submission constitute the proper combination for spiritual understanding. Unless there is submission and service,
inquiries from the learned spiritual master will not be effective. One must be able to pass the test of the spiritual
master, and when he sees the genuine desire of the disciple, he automatically blesses the disciple with genuine
spiritual understanding. In this verse, both blind following and absurd inquiries are condemned. Not only should one
hear submissively from the spiritual master, but one must also get a clear understanding from him, in submission and
service and inquiries. A bona fide spiritual master is by nature very kind toward the disciple. Therefore when the
student is submissive and is always ready to render service, the reciprocation of knowledge and inquiries becomes
perfect.
Gurudev: The things is, these things we have heard, so many times. Now how to practically find out you know, our
quest. Because there may not be bonafide spiritual master, around us. Then we will get stuck. So this spiritual quest is
so very magnanimous that it has its own arrangement. You can never get stuck. Otherwise, our forefathers would have
been all getting rotten. There was no Iskcon or any other society. Spiritual devotional service was there. That was the
only qualification. There were no lectures, no Bhagavatam discussions, no preachers, nothing. But even then, all the
celebrations were going on. They were offering food and everything to Krishna. Everything was going on. They were
not having chanting bag, japa mala beads.
I remember my grandmother was not able to count, how many malas she has chanted. So, she will take huge bowl full
of grains and start, chanting. She will chant one round and keep it aside. When we came back from school then she will
ask us to count. They were so simple, there were no japa malas or neck bead or this bead or that bead.
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.
This is in continuation of the transcription of one of the nectarean class, given by our beloved spiritual master HH
Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Bhagavad Gita verse 4.34-35, in Sri Sri Radha Neel Madhav dham, Rajkot on 3rd
October 2009. In the previous offering, we heard from Maharaj as to howour ancestors followed simple devotional
service.
Gurudev: And now counting beads from the bead bag. (Gurudev and devotees laugh). All this is a false show. I mean
to say sincerity is not there, but show is very good. You see the bag with that counting bead, never he counts. “I had
paid fifty rupees for it. That’s it. He paid and he forgot. That is the counting beads. He is just attracted to the size and
look. That’s it. Our mind doesn’t allow us to go to the spiritual side, unless we are really trained in it. Spiritual
education is here. Otherwise, they are just animals, just leading animal life. Why? Why we are forced to inquire about
the spiritual matters? What do we do then? You have nice job, eat nice prasad, dance wherever you want, nicely you
come here, why to leave? Why we should try to come here?
Gurudev: It is very spiritual (Gurudev laughs). The things is, apart from anything else, we are all thinking from the
angle of the mind. So we are mental really. We try to select one person, try to judge him by mind. So as soon as the
mind comes in, that thing becomes mental. Mental means mad. So mental people are, we are mental people. They are
not normal in their behaviour. The mind was never, in bhakti there was no mind. My grandfather was a very nice
devotee. But even then, he never told us, that this way you have to do, that way you have to do. No, he was doing
himself, that’s it. One day, he had twenty-five Laddu Gopal deities. Row, row was there. I many times told him one is
enough. Why you should have 25?. He said you are living kaliyug (Gurudev and devotees laugh)
Devotees: Laddugopal
Gurudev: "I told him one is enough, one is enough (Gurudev laughs). You are living kaliyuga." I did not understand.
"(Unclear) are living kaliyuga now, my house is very bad now because living Kaliyuga is here." (Gurudev and devotees
laugh). He couldn’t explain, but he was very attached to Them. And daily he would bathe Them you know, abhishek.
Long abhishek. They start at ten’o’clock in the morning. Dadima was hungry by that time. And she had to wait until he
finishes, and he takes the prasadam. So, she was after him. “You finish, you finish your pooja”. “You keep quiet”
(grandfather replies). (Gurudev laughs). That was the first fight I saw between my grandmother and grandfather.
(Gurudev laughs). They were shouting and screaming at each other. (Gurudev laughs). She was hungry, from morning
she was working very hard. There was no breakfast, nothing at all. So naturally she was hungry (Gurudev laughs). This
one would go on performing..
One day at two ‘o’clock everything was finished, 2:00pm. So, all the Lalji’s were dried and kept. Clothes were there,
everything was there, and prasadam was there. some dry fruits was there. So he was very happy that today….So then
he counted his Laddugopals . Instead of twenty-five there were twenty-four. (Gurudev and devotees laugh). So his pot
was this size. And those twenty-five would crowd there. (Gurudev and devotees laugh). One by one he will take and
wash Them and keep Them and then put the clothes. So maybe he had difficulty in seeing or whatever I don’t know.
But he missed one. Wrongly one was deep into the water, he couldn’t see. So, my sister took the water and went to the
Tulasi plant and put the water there. (Gurudev laughs). So, she came with the empty pot.
He said that one Lalji is missing. Where is it? So, I was near him. “You see here”. He said maybe it is there, maybe it is
there, maybe it is there. So whole house he forced us to clean you know (Gurudev and devotees laugh). I told Lalji
missed here, so you please search out here (Gurudev and devotees laugh). "Again Kaliyuga" (Gurudev and devotees
laugh). So then he said that dadi was screaming because she was hungry. So now there was no solution. "Unless the
Lalji is there, he will not eat." (Gurudev and devotees laugh). Dadi was (saying), "you are nonsense, this puja is of no
use." (Gurudev and devotees laugh). "Keep quiet," he (Dada) said.
Somehow or the other we kept quiet, and we were searching for Lalji everywhere. And couldn’t find at all. In the
meantime, the evening was there. Dusk was there and we couldn’t find 25th Lalji (Gurudev and devotees laugh). So in
the evening my sister went to put Diya in the Tulasi plant. She saw Lalji there (Gurudev and devotees laugh). Then she
took out Lalji from there and she gave, he put it there, he offered dandavats and then he took prasadam (Gurudev and
devotees laugh).
He had so much faith you know, so much. Lalji must be there. We would have told “Man! It is missing now we will find
out sometime. Come on let us have prasadam”. This is how we will do. But they will not do. They had full firm faith
towards Him. And after that they will do all business they were doing. Fields were there, some business was there,
everything was done. But pooja was not neglected, abhishek was not neglected.
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.

Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Bhagavad Gita verse 4.34-35, in Sri Sri Radha Neel Madhav dham, Rajkot on 3rd
October 2009. In the previous offering, we heard from Maharaj as to how
Gurudev: (Explaining how the ancestors were all naturally devoted to Lord, Maharaj quoted the verse 2.4.15 from
Srimad Bhagavatam) yat-kīrtanaṁ yat-smaraṇaṁ - (SB 2.4.15):
See very nice, he sings. But he is full of kalmaṣh. (Gurudev laughs). Mind doesn’t get cleared, because the faith is
missing. Unflinching faith is not there. Because we are really enamoured by the Kaliyuga forces, under the name of the
advancement. That’s why the simple life and unflinching faith in the Supreme Authority is lost. That is the reason we
are suffering. As soon as you lose faith, the first thing that goes wrong, is our body. Body survives on faith. Small child
has a definite faith that my mother is all in all. So he goes there and he has faith, nothing happens to him. His health is
very good, provided he is with his mother. When he leaves the mother, then he cries and there is great difficulty.
The same thing happens to us also. That we have left our mother and we are screaming you know. And we don’t want
to go back to her. That is the remedy. So instead of that somebody comes and gives chocolate to that child, for a while
he keeps quiet. But again he starts screaming, crying. He finishes the chocolate and again cries. He never keeps quiet
unless he has gone back to the mother. That is, that is the meaning of unflinching faith that we should not be lured by
these things. We should make our schedule, maybe, very simple schedule. Don’t have elaborate schedule. Elaborate
schedule will not help us. The thing is, the steadiness is the first thing. That we are missing.
Gurudev to a devotee: No, no, no don’t worry about it. I told you not to worry. No, no please. No, no I wanted you to
hear. Please don’t run away.
Gurudev: The leader is he who sits quiet, and everything goes on. Really. We don’t have to run around. No, you
just delegate, delegate the duties and let them do. If you think there is some trouble, call the person in charge and tell
why, what is happening. This is how, please, that is the leadership you know, very steady. We have to be very sober
about these things. If we ourselves are unsteady, unsteadiness will destroy our guidance. The thing is once
the nature is unsteady it cannot concentrate on sastras also. You may concentrate sometime, some
points you may get, but there is no continuity in it.

In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev as to how
Gurudev: The Bhagavatam is highly logical projected thing. So, continuity must be there. You should take two verses
together or three verses together or couple of verses together or a chapter together, or suppose you want to study
devotional service then Kapila, Kapiladev is really authority for devotional service. And in 2.7.3, in seventh chapter
scheduled incarnations is there. In Kapiladeva incarnation Prabhupada writes clearly that you have to study from
twenty-five to thirty-two chapters of third canto. So, you should select these chapters then if you have bit of time. If
not, select Kunti’s prayers, if not select small prayers. You know kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa mahā-bāho (SB 1.7.22), that is also
prayer. kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa mahā-bāho, bhaktānām abhayaṅkara, what is it?
arjuna uvāca
kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa mahā-bāho bhaktānām abhayaṅkara
tvam eko dahyamānānām apavargo ’si saṁsṛteḥ
Arjuna said: O my Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, You are the almighty Personality of Godhead. There is no limit to Your
different energies. Therefore only You are competent to instill fearlessness in the hearts of Your
devotees. Everyone in the flames of material miseries can find the path of liberation in You only.
uttarovāca
pāhi pāhi mahā-yogin deva-deva jagat-pate
nānyaṁ tvad abhayaṁ paśye yatra mṛtyuḥ parasparam
Gurudev: How nice it is? This one or two slokas you do. First three slokas you take. First three slokas is all Bhagavatam.
And it will take about six months nearly to go through it. So deep you know.
Please, try to concentrate. And for concentration we should avoid every time getting up. And we don’t understand one
thing. You may have something to do. I agree, but I am speaking to you. So, I am not tape recorder that you just switch
it on, and it will go on. I am not a machine. So, I am always disturbed. As soon as somebody gets up my consciousness
is gone. So, I have to pick up the thread then. Wherever we are sitting we should think about this. This is something is
going on. Just abrupt going, running away and coming back and, no, that is not allowed at all. That is the part of
spiritual education. And in no way you will learn with this.
The thing is, only one verse we take and try to meditate on it, and it will at least take you few hours to understand the
equivalents. These Prabhupada’s equivalents, they are the best, word to word. Nobody has given. Sanskrit word may
have ten, twelve meanings, but he has given appropriate meaning. In order to understand this, we require full
concentration. No other things in mind.
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering
In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev as to how
Gurudev: The mind is the greatest enemy. It will always force you to do this, to do that, to do that and that. Please,
this is spiritual education. And in that, what happens that we are all disturbed. The bunch who is sitting is disturbed,
the person who is going also, is disturbed. And then the continuity is gone. If continuity is gone, nobody understands
anything. As it is, we are short of time. Few of you may be gone at night, tonight. Again we don’t know when are we
going to see each other. So, this is how please try to understand this. And with this angle this verse must be studied
very nicely. upadekṣyanti, what is the meaning of upadekṣyanti?
Gurudev: Ah! That initiate word is very good. What is the meaning of initiate? Ah?
Gurudev: it is the beginning, isn’t it. That is the meaning. Anything? "in the beginning" - one thing is there that, that
something you have finished.
Devotee: Correct
Gurudev: We don’t think about these things. Really to think about these things my mind must be very steady.
(Gurudev laughs). And really my, my thirst for knowing Bhagavad Gita should be incomparable. Even now
we are not worried about our death, last day of this body. And we are just thinking that I have yet to
pass fifty years. And that’s why we are wasting our time. We are not concentrating at all.
Unless you concentrate.. this is obvious isn’t it. Initiate means beginning. You can’t, you can never begin, unless you
finish something. Man! You started from Chennai. So, you wound up the whole thing there. You had your office, you
had your children, you had your this, that. So everywhere you have to tie the ends you know. And then you are free to
walk to the airport. Without locking your house, you cannot walk. So, house should be locked. There shouldn’t be any
precious things inside, thieves may come or something. So many things you have to do. So, because you have
arranged that thing very nicely, that’s why you could initiate your flight (Gurudev laughs). Otherwise, you will not be
(able to) initiate.
So here we have to pack off. And we have to pack off the mental side. Then only you can begin spiritual. And again
packing off mental, mental side is not very easy. Daily we have to be mental (Gurudev and devotees laugh). And daily
you have to pack. Daily you have to be mental, daily you have to pack. So eventually that box becomes like my
grandfather’s case. Open on the other side, locked on the other side. That what’s our material things are. You try to
lock everything. Everything is in the locker, everything is deposited in the fixed deposit, and everything is, and that
side is open. The money is in the hand of somebody else. They can, "haribol" anytime they can do (Gurudev laughs).
Lockers could be broken anytime. And if everything is alright, if the government is in need, they will seal it. And we are
locking it. And the other side is completely open.
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering

Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Bhagavad Gita verse 4.34-35, in Sri Sri Radha Neel Madhav dham, Rajkot on 3rd
October 2009. In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev as to how his grandfather was very simple and had
innocent faith on Lord. Now we shall hear further.
Gurudev: I was very, I was very, very clear with my grandfather (Gurudev laughs). But he was very upset. (Gurudev
laughs). And as soon as I thought it was truth really, he said ,"you are kaliyuga" (Gurudev laughs). He couldn’t tolerate
me speaking to him (Gurudev laughs). “You are so young what you understand”? Somehow or the other inquisitive
mind was there. And I could understand, as a child also, I could understand it is silly to lock three locks. And back side
is open (Gurudev and devotees laugh). Anybody can understand this, but this is how the old people, they had their own
ways you know. The only thing, one thing was there that for material things they didn't care much. As I told you, that
box itself with the lock somebody could carry (Gurudev laughs). And he will never know who did it. Everybody was
coming. There was no lock in the house (Gurudev and devotees laugh). When we used to go to the temple, my mother
used to just push the door and go. And bag was there, lock but that side open (Gurudev laughs). How to protect these
things? Please, we think that we are advanced. But we have really committed greatest mistake in leaving the innocent,
innocent life (Gurudev laughs). They had everything, but they don’t have any scratch in the mind. Envy was
completely absent. Envy was not there at all. No enmity. And they didn't fight with anybody. They had only one
attraction that Kṛṣṇa’s jobs must be done first. That’s it. And somehow or the other, carry on the material drama, that’s
it. (Gurudev laughs). And they were very lucky really. Kṛṣṇa helped them. Everything was supplied by the field, farm.
As you have farms. Don’t have to worry at all dal is coming, oil seeds are coming. Everything. And oil seeds we were
sending it to the oil men, it will crush you know with the wooden. In Solapur also we have the teeli….
Devotee: Solapur
Devotee: we do that
Devotee; ghana
Gurudev: Ah! Ghana, and badup, the bullock will move about. And the grains will be crushed, and nice oil will come
out. And he could supply us the edible oil also and oil for the burning also. So, no electricity was needed. Lamps were
there, very soothing light. Even now I don’t have any specs you know. We studied in the lamps. This original life is
incomparable. When I see this light, I pity the younger ones really. They have, they have specs. Few, few six years old
boy is wearing specs, because there is nothing to eat and all unnatural life. This is not spiritual. So, if you want to
initiate spiritual in these times, before you understand Bhagavad Gita or Bhagavatam our this Atma’s principle should
be followed. You must be completely clean outside first. And then inside maybe. The cleaning process must go
on. Otherwise, you are not fit to get initiated. You please go back from here and at least clean your house. If you
really go into your house and try to find out, half the things will be worth throwing. So, throw away the
things, learn to throw away. We try to cling on. The more we cling on the more dust is there. So, this is
how. Clean, clean, clean the place. Clean your own things.
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering

Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Bhagavad Gita verse 4.34-35, in Sri Sri Radha Neel Madhav dham, Rajkot on 3rd

begin the spiritual things. Now we shall hear further.
Gurudev: Our shaving kit must be very clean. Only the working shaver must be there. One, one razor is working, that’s
it. And something to put on, may be you are putting on foams or whatever to shave. That’s it. Or scissors or
something. Within no time we can just shave. But if the shaving kit is dirty, you don’t know which razor is working. You
take this ququuqu…(making funny sounds as though shaving) No, no, aye! Aye! Man like a mad, crazy person.
Somebody comes to the bathroom, he (will) say crazy he is taking this, he is taking that. And even then, the shaving is
not good. This is how please (Gurudev laughs) dirtiness will give you the dirty results. So, in order to have the
clean results, we must be very clean. And it begins from our own belongings. That is bhakti. My clothes, I
must have the idea that I have put on, it is getting dirty today. So that I should put on next day or not. Whether it is
tolerable or not. If it is tolerable continue. And then when it is to be washed. Don’t be cruel to the cloth also. Yesterday
somebody told, in Hindi somebody told that if you keep the clothes nicely, clothes will keep you nicely. But we don’t
know. We don’t keep our clothes; we throw in the bathroom.
We were in Africa and that some lady was to wash all the clothes. So, whoever comes they will throw in the, all the
clothes were dirty, more dirtier than what they were. And a big heap was there. And that lady will come, why should
she be careful again? So, she will crush. So, within a month the clothes are gone. This is not the way. Dirty clothes also
should be folded and kept and should be washed by our own hand, so far as possible. The paid workers, why should
they care for your kurta? They have to wash, that’s it. So, in this respect initiate yourself that you will do it. Water is
there, hot water is there, soap powder is there, or soap, ordinary soap is there. How long does it take? Just it is dirty
here, so just we have to squeeze it a bit. Rest of the things are clean really. So kurta will not take even three
minutes. But we have dirty habit, that you collect the clothes or throw the clothes anywhere. And then dip them in the
soap powder for a day or two. They get rotten there. Don’t put your clothes in the soap water for long time, no.
Thinking that the dirt will come out, no. Dirt comes out within no time. It’s hardly three minutes. As soon as we take
our bath our clothes must be washed. So, before we dry our body and come out, the clothes must be hanging on the
place, wherever it is for drying. That is initiation. Then nothing is in my mind, that my kurta is dirty or my this cloth is
not ready, or my gamcha is not washed. Nothing. And water is already, fortunately available at the moment. So we can
very easily put this thing into practice. Before you touch japa mala these are the things to be followed.
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering
In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev that we have to keep our belongings very clean and
that dirtiness will give dirty results. Now we shall hear further.
Gurudev: svavilamby. (Hindi word meaning one who does his work independently) And you can do it. Very easily all
the boys in the house, if they can do, they can do their own job, mother will be bit free, bit relaxing. She doesn't have
to run too much then. She will be helped regarding this. Everybody must be trained in this.
Then the third thing is, we should have fixed places to keep our things. In the cupboard or outside the cupboard
or wherever. So, if you want, you go to that place and you get it. For example car key. You have only one key. And we
cannot have duplicate. So, it’s gone means gone. So that key must be on one nail or wherever. So, everybody should
be trained to keep that key there. Nobody should throw it on the table. This is how. Pen, one pen is working very nicely
so you want that pen always. So, keep that pen also in that place where you can find. And if your things are well
arranged you can sleep very nice. You know that I will be missing nothing. I will get everything which I want. That
should be our organisation.
Disorganised man can never study Bhagavad Gita or Bhagavatam, never! He may try. He will never be able
to. Because his mind is completely khichdi. He doesn’t know where his kurta is, he doesn’t know what to put on, he
doesn’t know what work he is doing. He doesn’t know anything. Everywhere it is dis-organization. And this requires the
waking, you should always be awake, awake. Otherwise, we waste our time, and we will not be organised at all.
And that’s why this Atma (referring to poem composed by HG Atmaprasad Prabhuji) has given very nice clues you
know. That don’t waste time. Regarding money we are troubled if it is gone, but not to that extent. Health is gone then
something is gone. Then character must be taken care of. He gives that sentence very nicely. Because only the saintly
behaviour will make the humanity thrive. Everywhere because of saintly behaviour the humanity has progressed. So,
this are very simple ways. Then we should work very immaculately well. This is pre-devotional service.
And what we do, we are hurrying, we are in a hurry to preach. That is again our attraction. Whereas Bhagavatam says
ratiḥ tad-āśrayeṣu. Parikshit Maharaj asks, bhagavaty anante, I should always be attracted to Kṛṣṇa, and
punaś ca bhūyād bhagavaty anante, ratiḥ prasaṅgaś ca tad-āśrayeṣu (SB 1.19.16), I should have prasaṅga,
association. As I told you saṅga is association, prasaṅga is Kṛṣṇa’s association, Prabhu’s association. So we must have
prasaṅga. You know they organise Bhagavat saptah and they go for invitation, they say we have prasaṅga. It’s not
saṅga. Nobody says saṅga. Everybody says prasaṅga. Then marriage invitation they say we have prasaṅga. Marriage
is a great sacrifice, so it’s a prasaṅga. tad-āśrayeṣu, those who have taken shelter you must associate.
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering
In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev that disorganised person can never study Bhagavad
Gita or Bhagavatam. Now we shall hear further.
Gurudev: But then procrastination should be avoided. "I will do it tomorrow, do it tomorrow." We finished our initiation
within no time, we all started, and it's done now. Out of way. So, you are all free to go. How relaxing it is? There is no
procrastination. Otherwise tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes. And you lose the jobs in
procrastination, this habit. The boss sees whether you are working or not. You should be very particular about it
that the day you are given the job, you should try your best to finish it. It’s too long or this, we may have some
relaxation but never postpone. That is his (Atma Prabhuji’s) message again.
And then gain he has given very nice clue, that unless Kṛṣṇa remembers, you can never remember Kṛṣṇa. So
how to force Kṛṣṇa to remember me? So, I should remember Him. Do you follow me? Do you follow me? How to force
Him to remember? I want Him to remember me. So, I must start. I can’t do it unless He remembers. So, He has to.
Force Kṛṣṇa and catch Him and keep Him with you in the form of Bhagavad Gita, in the form of some
Prabhupada’s book. And these are all prelude to devotional service. Then you find out some realised person
(Gurudev laughs). Then again the devotees were telling Prabhupada always. You tell that, "shuddha bhakta must be
there you know for initiation, and nowadays it is very difficult, where to find out." (Gurudev laughs). Prabhupada gave
a nice answer. He said “Rascal without you, except you, everybody is shuddha”. Your eyes are contaminated he said,
that’s why you don’t see any shuddha. The meaning is, from today always see the good in the living entities.
Gurudev: Good in the living entity and magnify. Don’t see bad and magnify. This, in Sati’s episode there is phalgūn
guṇān bahulī-kariṣṇavo (SB 4.4.12), Sati says to her father that my husband Shiva has a good quality. He sees very
little good quality and he magnifies. We are all bad and good. And good is very little always. So, find out some little
good and magnify. This is again prelude to devotional service.

October 2009. In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev that we have to keep our belongings very clean and
that
1. Procrastination is very bad and we might end up losing our jobs because of this habit.
2. We must keep Krishna with us in the form of Bhagavad Gita and Srila Prabhupada's books.
3. We must see good in others and magnify it , we must not meditate on their bad qualities, nor should we magnify
them.
Gurudev: You haven’t started devotional service. And in the meantime, maybe Kṛṣṇa’s mercy, you will realise that
this man died, that man died, that man died, that man died. Daily death is going on. Always we hear that grandfather
is gone, father is gone, this is gone, that is gone. So, the sane mind is always is put into question you know. They are
all going, and we may go to the cemetery also. So, we see that man burning on the pyre, the man who was talking to
us. So, the sane mind has an inquisitive nature. What is happening, he was just talking to me before ten minutes. Now
he is burning. So, one day I will also be burnt. "Would I be able to tolerate it or not?" That was my first worry in the
cemetery. When I saw somebody burning, I was really crying that would I be able to tolerate this burning (Gurudev
laughs). Because I thought that I cannot even tolerate a small burn. How can I tolerate my hand burning? We didn't
have any idea of soul, Supersoul, body, no idea at all. And there was nobody to guide. That was on top of it (Gurudev
laughs). So, it is a hard struggle to understand.
So, this is the clue wherein we come out of the material rut. And try to approach the transcendence in puny capacity
whichever we have. Maybe in the family somebody is chanting, somebody is worshipping. Then our dadi ma, she did
not know how to count, but even then she was counting. So these are permanent impressions. And they will try to find
out why she was chanting, worshipping, (not clear), why she went to mandir. With so many children, ladies had to do
very hard job. In Solapur also you know they have to go to the wells or river, take out the water with the rod, and fill
their vessels, they put on the head again, one in the waist and they walk with the other ladies. They talk also. Such a
hard work was there. And water also drinking water maybe far away. So that well they will go. Maybe one kilometre,
two kilometre in the heat.
Gurudev: ya! And they were walking. For snan they will bring the separate water, for drinking they will bring the
separate water. And there is no water, we will be upset.
Gurudev: ya! So many things, so many things were there. And the ladies didn't speak at all. This modern lady can’t
stay for one day job, their job. Cannot, and even then, they are sick always. Because they are not working. The body
requires continuous movement. Don’t sit for long time please. It requires movement. And movement is
life. Stillness is death. So that’s why this one doctor Thambe, near Bombay, he is in Lonavala or somewhere. He has
started an Ayurvedic shop for whole India, moving shop. You will also see his shop in Chennai. (Gurudev laughs). So, he
has given two clues that you should not sit still, always work, something. .
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering
In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev that by remembering the last day we should come out
of the material rut, by taking shelter of transcendence (chanting, study of scriptures)
Gurudev: (Appreciating few devotees who were engaged in cleaning service Gurudev says) You cleared, you pushed
these things out of sight and how nice clean place it is. And nobody feeds. On the contrary you are hungry to eat. And
again you have the capacity to clean the whole thing, but we don’t want. Kaliyuga, lazy. And because lazy is the father,
son is short-lived. As soon as you are lazy, you are short-lived. And that is the initial, initial of kaliyuga. S L - short
lived. They don’t live long.
Devotee: Maharaj actually in my family background Ah! My grandfathers they lived more than hundred years last
time.
Devotee: Three to four months back my sister’s great grandmother expired. She was hundred and twenty-five years.
Devotee: Even now also my grandfathers’ brothers they are still alive. They were freedom fighters, all these things.
Gurudev: This is because you have farming. And always in open, always in open. And, I don’t know with all due
respect to his life, (referring to another devotee who is doing night shift) we may wish him long life, but don’t know
really. Because day work is not there. Night work is there. So we are killing ourselves. Money is required. Formerly
money, we didn't kill ourselves. It was all day job. Night job was not there at all. Night is the gift of the Western world.
At seven O clock the village was completely locked. Black, dark. There was no electricity. Thieves were running around
(Gurudev and devotees laugh).
And thieves were also very simple. One day two thieves they broke in the rich man's shop. And they took something,
but they couldn’t really tolerate theft. (Gurudev laughs). So they had to go to the toilet. So toilet was a bit far away. So
people were surprised these two people why they are going again and again to the toilet (Gurudev laughs). They
caught them and asked “Aye! Why are you going to the toilet now”? He said “Ah! Because we have committed theft”
(Gurudev laughs). Thieves also, they were not thieves really. But somehow or the other theft was there. Please, this
simplicity is now a dream. Now thieves, we are sitting now here and our mobile will be gone. (Gurudev laughs). And
who is thief among us we don’t know (Gurudev laughs). Please, the times are completely changed, but even then
Prabhupada’s mercy that he has given us this process you know, to come over, overcome our material side, too much
we are attracted to, and come to the spiritual side.
That’s why, in whichever way we want to be initiated. You get initiated and try to start something. You may not be up
to the standard, but we will be eventually. Because itself, the process itself is the goal. In spiritual matters process and
goal is non-different. In material things to become a doctor, is not just going to the college, college also doctor -
process is different from the goal. But in spiritual matters, process is also Kṛṣṇa and goal is also Kṛṣṇa. So it's very
easy. You read Bhagavad Gita and Kṛṣṇa is there. So this consciousness is known as Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Wherever
you go you find Him.
Otherwise, what these stones, have they any capacity they can hold the weight? They don’t any strength. Because
they are holding the weight, whole weight. It is not them, it is the transcendence to the stone which is helping it to
hold it. This building is standing, we have the transcendental building to support this building. Soul has a Supersoul to
support it. Because this body can’t survive. Material body has a spiritual body. Everywhere the spiritual thing is there.
And that’s why the energy is there. The result is spirit. Everything in the beginning was spirit. aham evāsam evāgre.
āgre - before I was there. Why can’t we change our sight this way. If you change, it is all nandana van - then nobody is
our enemy, we don’t hate anybody.
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering
In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev that laziness, night work etc shortens our lives.
Gurudev: To some extent we have to discriminate. Now suppose my son comes and stands here. So I have to leave
for a while and go to attend to him. He doesn’t know that I am a sannyasi or what. For him I am his father. For me also
he is my son. So sannyasa does not cut off. Artificial cutting off relationship is a nonsense thing. I remember
some sannyasi was not willing to see his son and daughter. And eventually within a week he ran away with the typist
(Gurudev and devotees laugh). Please, these artificial things can’t work. Balanced attitude will always help you.
We have our own relationships, we have our own priorities also, so those priorities have got to be
maintained. My wife wants clothing, means I cannot go on distributing sarees to the world and not give her, why not?
Why not to her? She is also living entity. And that is my duty. So priority must be there. So this way slight priorities are
there.
But the whole outlook is based on Kṛṣṇa. So we see Kṛṣṇa everywhere. And that is jnan, that is knowledge. And that is
the beginning of the knowledge. This tree, there is germination. It is grown. So, where there is growth, Kṛṣṇa must be
there. We were like a pea in the womb of our mother. Such a big body has come out. Now we may be more big, bigger
than our own mother. That doesn’t mean that we just came out with this body like Sukadev Goswami (Gurudev
laughs). We were all small, very small. And slowly the body developed. That we know now through the pages of
Bhagavatam. Please, this knowledge, everything makes us more serious about Kṛṣṇa’s presence in everything. That is
really riches. And from today we try to be sama-drśaḥ- equal, equal minded, sama-drśaḥ- equipoised. Again as I told, in
equipoised also we have our priority. But vidheyatma, regulated freedom is allowed. Then you can take care of your
children, you can take care of your wife. Even then you should be equal.
The basic principle should be that we should not unnecessarily hate anybody. Envy should be completely
absent. With envious nature you cannot go one single inch ahead on the spiritual path. Envy is such a
bad thing. First thing you have to stop is to be envious anywhere. And that is the first thing we do everywhere.
So, we are failures there, there is no potency. He said I did so much, they don’t like it. Because as we know, research is
always carried out that people won’t learn anything from hearing. They only learn five percent from hearing. Then they
try to associate, and then they learn thirty-five percent. Then they again try to stay with you, they learn ninety percent
then. This is how. The association helps them to know what you are. And in that they may forget you also, if they find
the opposite behaviour. They will not come to us again. This is the point.
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering
In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev that artificial cutting of relationships is not a good
thing. We should not envy/hate others.
Gurudev: So instead of making a funny show, it is better to have a bit of originality. Whatever we have, I am not
the expert. But whatever I have, I am genuine. Innocence should be there, innocent like a child. Child
doesn’t put on a show, never. Have you seen any child put on a show? He will, he is whatever he is. He is so
innocent, you hit him and again he will come to you. (Gurudev laughs). Innocence must be there. And with
innocence we really can cross over all the difficulties of this material world. Innocence means humility is
there, namrata is there always.
And everybody likes namrata in others. He doesn’t like himself to be namra. That is how (Gurudev and devotees
laugh). So better we nourish his pride, so if he is happy (Gurudev laughs) let him be happy. So if he is happy, then he
will not trouble us more (Gurudev laughs). This is how. If he is not happy, then he will trouble us. So everywhere we
have to use some lubrication to get out (Gurudev laughs). And we have to get out of these material clutches. This envy
is a clutch, you are caught into it. So you have to use the lubrication and come out of it. That is known from Bhagavad
Gita how to do it. Arjuna asked so many questions, Kṛṣṇa replies. Then again we have to have a bit of time and some
guide to show you what is what.
Again, as I told you we should not get stuck that we don’t have any realised person. Prabhupada is most realised, and
his words are authoritative, bonafide. We don’t require any bonafide (Gurudev laughs) more bonafide than
Prabhupada. Prabhupada is sufficient for us. So this way please get completely contented with these two books in the
beginning. Don’t read too much. But then afterwards Mahabharata, Ramayana, they are nice clue to Bhagavatam. In
Bhagavatam the episodes are there. The clues are not given. So for clues we have to go to pages of Mahabharata and
Ramayana. Now fortunately in English this Prajna….,
Gurudev: Ah! Purnaprajna from Vrindavan, his books are nice. I have his books, Mahabharata is very clear in story
form. We don’t have authoritative translation of this Valmiki Ramayana you know. In south you may have. South you
may have English translation. But because they are not devotees, they have not presented in a way we wanted, you
know. Narayaneeyam?
Gurudev: Kerala
Gurudev: I have the book with the English translation. It is very weird. We can’t understand really because the devotee
is not there. So devotion must be there. Otherwise, it is like the milk touched by the serpent. Then you don’t
understand, you die. So better stick to Prabhupada’s literature. And that too give concession to the neophytes that
please don’t worry, one small book you select. That we have fifteen small books here. Any book and you’ll get the
knowledge. One, hardly hundred pages are there. And the cost is ten, fifteen rupees you know. You can eat two
ghutkas and finish. Ten rupees are gone you know. So in two ghutkas you can get such a nice literature. And this is
how, put in front of the (public). And this is only the beginning as I told you. Then we should go to the second verse.
(BG 4.35) That is really instructive how you have to behave after initiation.
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering
In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev that innocence must be there. And with
innocence we really can cross over all the difficulties of this material world.
Gurudev: (begins to explain 4.35 which teach how we should behave after initiation)
Devotee reads the equivalents and devotees repeat: yat — which; jñātvā — knowing;
Gurudev: Now you have known to be humble, submissive and enquire. So we know that Kṛṣṇa is everything. That is
initiation. Then?
Gurudev: After knowing this, after knowing this, never, yes go on.
Devotee continues to read the word to word and devotees repeat, Gurudev confirms by saying Umm!: punaḥ — again;
moham — to illusion; evam — like this; yāsyasi — you shall go;
Gurudev: This moham we should not go. And it is difficult part. But now we are initiated. We know that Kṛṣṇa is all in
all. So the moha we should get rid off as soon as possible. Somehow or the other, by hook or crook, we should never be
back in the moha. And how to do it? It is everybody’s question. But you are having different circumstances of your
own. So come out of this moha. And moha is bound to be there. I have ten lakhs of rupees. So how can I distribute it? I
can’t do it. Because my being will not allow me, to distribute. I want, but I can’t do it. This is against my grain to
distribute the whole thing. I am afraid that if I distribute ten lakhs, what am I going to do? Tomorrow the girl will be
there. The girl will run away - without money (Gurudev laughs) isn't it? You don’t know that I was also in your age
(Gurudev laughs).
Material things we have to organise. This is needed. But this moha always is a big problem. And particularly when you
marry. You are right caught into that whim you know. So far you had to worry about one family, then you have to
worry about the second set. "And my father was so good, and you are not looking at him" (Gurudev laughs). And then,
"No, No, No my father is alright, but I look to your father first." (Gurudev laughs) And then you just glide down. So
many responsibilities. Everywhere the problems are there. Marriage means two problems. One your set and the other
set. Where to go, is a problem. If you don’t go, the crying and shouting is there. No cooking (Gurudev laughs). "Forget
about it, some money I can let it go, but I have to have peaceful life." (Gurudev laughs). This is how please, it is a
trying thing. Moha has got to be there. Moha will always be there. Maybe, we enlarge the field. That is not remedy for
moha
. Because I am not really attracted. "I am helping her father." Why her father, why, why not anybody else? That is
without moha.
But we, we try to convince ourselves that whatever I am doing is correct. And I am out of moha, you know. Because we
have some spiritual understanding. So, we are very proud, "I am devotee." You have shaved off, shikha is there,
everything is there. Father-in-law comes, we are bakri (Gurudev laughs). Or any relative, this side or that side we have
to serve. So "our" relatives - the poor fellow come and go. But if that "other side", relatives come, if you don’t pay
attention, you had it. (Gurudev laughs) So this moha increases with all samskaras, because we don’t know that
marriage is a samskara. Marriage is not ordinary contract. Now it is treated like that. And that’s why nobody cares for
anything. It’s the western world. But we care for whole generation you know?, care for whole generation. And
everybody has done it so far. And everything, because the main profession was farming.
You know farming always plenty of things were available. So if somebody takes something you don’t mind. Kṛṣṇa will
give. As I told you, we went to some orange garden. He will bring one sack of oranges. Eat Children! (Gurudev laughs)
And now you go to orange garden, danda will come. ( Gurudev laughs) not a single orange. Because they knew that
if you feed it Kṛṣṇa will again give. Now Kṛṣṇa is out of the picture. So danda is in picture. The
magnanimity is gone.
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering
In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev that people were magnanimous in the olden days.
Gurudev: With Kṛṣṇa only, we can be magnanimous. And moha really kills us you know. This one verse is very
nice verse regarding moha. You can write if you want. ajānan, ajānan means without knowing. ajānan dāhātmyam
patati shalabho deepa dahane. dahane. The meaning is very easy. ajānan means without knowing, dāhātmyam, just to
get burnt, patati - falls down, shalabho - the moth, goes into the flame, that is deep, dahane, it will be burnt. Moth
doesn’t know that it is mrtyu there. But it is attracted by the flame, which is not really a safe place to go. But it throws
himself. You might have seen that again he comes out, again goes back, again goes, again, again (goes back into the
fire). This is moha. Very nice example. Sing. - ajānan dāhātmyam patati shalabho deepa dahane. He burns, he dies
himself in that moha. Then second one. Na, na meeno api - fish. na meeno api ajñānāt vaḍīsha yutam asnati pīśhitām,
pīśhitam. Second example. na meeno api ajñānāt - this fish, due to ignorance, she tries to eat the piece of meat. But
she is caught on the hook. She doesn’t know. She only sees the meat, which is moha. The moth sees only flame, it
doesn’t see its death. Fish sees only meat piece, doesn’t see that she is going to be killed. And the third thing is there.
Vijānanto api ete vayam īha vishajjāla, double ja, vishajjāla jaṭilāt. Then last line na munchā maha kāman īha gahano
moha mahimā. Now sing, sing. You don’t have anything to write? Write in the next line. Ah?
We know that vishajāl is very complicated. You know complicated meshes of birth and death. There is one verse. -
āpannaḥ saṁsṛtiṁ ghorāṁ (SB 1.1.14) yan-nāma vivaśo gṛṇan, complicated meshes of birth and death we are stuck
into it. That is vishajāla. jaṭilāt, jaṭila means complicated. And even then na muncāmaha, I don’t want to leave. Kamān,
my desires. Iha gahano moha mahima, this is moha, importance of moha. We know that it is destructive, even then we
don’t control our desires.
From today you have controlled your desires. You don’t want to touch fish, meant and eggs in any circumstances. You
don’t want to have any illicit connections. Our crowd is completely pure. So we are not in sleep. We have controlled our
desires. And because we have controlled the root, so kāma is not there. Kāma is absent. And once it is absent, moha
will not be there.
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering
In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev that when there are no unwanted desires, there
will be no moha.
Gurudev: We know that the shop is beautiful and television set may be like a cinema screen, big. But we don’t see
even, go ahead. We don’t want. No kama. We don’t want it. So we are off that market. So, the less requirement you
have, the more free you are. And the beauty is whatever money you earn, will go long. Otherwise with
complicated life, money will be short. Then again we have to have dishonesty to get more. And dishonesty again is like
moth. Moth throws itself into the lamp. We also, because our requirement is uncontrolled, so we throw ourselves into
dishonesty. And we die in dishonesty. You lose your job, death of your job. But again and again we do dishonesty. This
should be stopped.
And suppose you are unemployed, there is bound to be some time you know. So even then we don’t worry too much.
We try to find out some job. But in unemployed situation also, because our life is very simple, we don’t require much.
So we carry on. Maybe you have invested your money somewhere, some little interest is coming, this or that, some
income is there. We survive. And we increase our Kṛṣṇa consciousness. The more you increase this, you will
be out of moha. With Kṛṣṇa moha can never survive. So please remember this. So many things to be told we
need to stop here. Jai!! Have you anything to ask?
Devotee: Maharaj
Gurudev: Yes?
Devotee: Actually married life, once we are initiated, how should we progress to Kṛṣṇa (not clear).
Gurudev: We saw vidheyatma, regulated freedom is there for sense enjoyment also. So best way is to follow the Vedic
style. We may not have separate rooms, but beds must be separate. There is no word for double bed in Sanskrit to my
knowledge. Did you find anywhere?
Gurudev: no, no, no, no name for double bed. Double bed is the product of moha (Gurudev laughs). So, we should
avoid that and have separate beds. And remember that everything is transitory, everything. calat chittam, calat
vittam. calat chittam means our mind is flickering. calat vittam, our money is flickering, calat jīvana yauvanam, our
life, youth, all flickering. calācalam idam sarvam, everywhere is calācala, its changing. bhaktir yasya sa jīvati, those
who have devotional service, they only survive. Otherwise, everything is calācala. So this we should remember. So in
the evening one thing we should try very seriously, unless you want for your job or whatever this computer and this…
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering
In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev that if we increase our Krishna consciousness,
we will be out of moha.
Gurudev: (Referring to a devotee Gurudev says) Once he was here from Australia. And we are going in Bombay in a
rickshaw. He was white devotee. So he saw one beggar, so he was very generous, he took one rupee and put on his, in
his hand. The beggar held the rupee, and he won’t go. So, then the rickshaw tried to move, so he threw that rupee into
his mouth. "Hey! Leave me," And beggar doesn’t accept one rupee now. You should give him five rupees. These are
not beggars; they are something else you know. So really if you want to do some charity, as I told you, go to the ants,
put some sugar. They will not throw it back at least (Gurudev laughs). Pigeons are there, cows are there. With your
own hands, you should do. Please, try to do something.
Or I tell many times that (not clear) here also. Buy paanipuri and sell paanipuri. May be at twenty-five places,
organise nice chain, chain stores. (Gurudev laughs) And paanipuri is very nice business. Puri is available, paani is
there. You just have to break it and give it, that’s it. Some potato or this or so, nobody knows what you are doing. And
every evening you have to go. In the morning you can have nice japa session (Gurudev laughs). And in the evening
here one, the, this building is paanipuri building. This yellow building. He is paanipuri man. Daily he sells for one
thousand rupees. And out of one thousand, seven hundred is his profit. And he cannot get fifteen thousand rupees
salary anywhere.
I mean to say, if you are really honest and hardworking, we can survive, we can somehow or the other
survive. Nobody knows what you are doing. And don’t be ashamed. Always the big restaurants they start
from the small beginning. River is always big, but at the root they are very small. So from small thing you
can.
One of my friends was this mithai man you know. He knew how to make these savouries and dal and jalebi and this
and that. So, he rented one place in London. And the place was quite good. But he didn’t have money to put furniture
inside. So he knew only this potato balls. You know, just boil the potato, mix it and fry it and ball is ready. So broken
table he bought, and he covered it on all sides, inside was very dirty (Gurudev laughs). So cloth was there. And this
potato balls and chutney was there. And his shop started.
In the beginning he did about five hundred pounds per week and slowly now he has added the savoury and everything.
Now the same place he is taking thirty thousand pounds per week, within ten years. He doesn’t know where to put the
money now. And place has become so very costly. So always small beginning, will give you more. If you are alive,
something will come. In Hindi it is very nicely said that, sir salamat to pagadi hazar, sir salamat - our head is intact,
then you can have millions of pagadis (turbans). But if your sir (head) is not there what’s the use of pagadi (Gurudev
laughs). So, if you are alive….sir salamat to pagadi hazar (Gurudev and devotees laugh). Anything you can buy.
Because you have head ready. But if you don’t have head, what is the use of pagadi? (Gurudev laughs).
So, save yourselves somehow or the other. Kṛṣṇa is very kind. He says that “My devotee never perishes”, pratijānīhi
kaunteya na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati
(BG 9.31). He promises you know, na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati. So, we have to be His bhakta, that’s it. We are safe
(Gurudev laughs).
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering
In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev that if we are really honest and hardworking, we
can survive, we can somehow or the other survive..
Devotee: Maharaj, in married life normally there are lot of expectations from each other.
Gurudev: In the beginning it is going to be there, in the beginning it’s going to be there. But what happens regarding
girls, that till they are under the care of parents or parental side, they have suppressed their own feelings, how their
life should be. And they are watching television, seeing the American scenes and bungalows and this and that. So, she
is thinking about something. So, the way she is trained in parent’s house, the desires must be there. So, when they
marry then they have the outlet of the desires. So naturally they will demand this, that, that, that. One or two children
and they understand that that this man doesn’t have capacity (Gurudev and devotees laughs), so they control
themselves. Otherwise run away, divorces. Nowadays very rampant and nowhere they can fulfil their desires. How can
you have American bungalow in India? You can’t have. And then in our house then again there may be joint family. So
again, the marketplace is there, so they can’t have the solitary enjoyment or whatever, they can’t go out with you
alone. So again, there is rebellion. So, you have to go to Chennai, leave Solapur, nice svarga (heaven) like Solapur.
Leave and go to hell like Chennai. You want to move alone (Gurudev laughs).
So, this is how we don’t think spiritual side at all in the beginning at least. Both are young, both are inexperienced.
Then slowly they go to some place and then they are experienced you know. So slowly these things subside. And if you
are lucky, some children are there, then the things go normal - if Kṛṣṇa wishes. Otherwise always there is difficulty,
always there is difficulty. This material life can never be as we desire, never. We have to adjust, adjust
(Gurudev laughs).
There was one retired fellow in London. There are nice council play houses for elderly people. So they go there and
play, play cards or this or that. During the day they do, bus ride is free. So one couple, about sixty five years old. They
were sitting there. And their conversation was very interesting. She said (Gurudev laughs) "my father was denying me
to marry you." (Gurudev and devotees laugh). (Old man said) “Heeee”..He can’t hear properly (Gurudev and devotees
laugh). He (the father) said that, "this princess cannot be married to this donkey" (Gurudev and devotees laugh).
Eventually my mother and sister, and you came to my luck, destiny. "Now I hate you." Man! Children are there, even
then, she remembers her father (Gurudev laughs). So was like princess, treated like a princess. M"y father was such a
big man, you are a scratch." He was in London, he might have worked very hard to satisfy her (Gurudev laughs)
whatever. But even then he said, "nothing you could earn. I knew from the beginning that you are donkey, my father
told me (Gurudev and devotees laugh). It is only me who is clever. That’s why you got money." (Gurudev and devotees
laugh). And that fellow heard half of the conversation. Good that he was hard of hearing (Gurudev and devotees
laugh).I mean to say (Gurudev laughs), I mean to say, don’t get fed up with each other.
Krishna willing we shall hear further nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering
This is in conclusion of the transcription of one of the nectarean class, given by our beloved spiritual master HH
Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Bhagavad Gita verse 4.34-35, in Sri Sri Radha Neel Madhav dham, Rajkot on 3rd
October 2009. In the previous offering, we heard from Gurudev that material life can never be as we desire,
never. We have to adjust.
Gurudev: And the beauty is that woman's place is at home and man's place is outside. The man doesn’t want to
leave. He tolerates kicks, banging and this and that. But even then, he wants to stay in home. Then
sannikarṣo ’tra martyānām, anādaraṇa-kāraṇam (SB 10.84.31). Then always disrespected. That’s why man must
understand, at the age of sixty or sixty-five, seventy that he should quit home.
Once we heard that there was one Punjabi family, going from Delhi to Bombay. And they had an old man with them
about eighty-five-year-old. So, they came to Baroda. He said that I want to drink tea. So train was to stop there. So he
might have drank tea and the train moved. And they didn’t see him climbing the train. So they thought that he might
have caught hold of any other compartment. So they didn’t try. In Bombay they got off and they found out that he
didn’t come at all. And he vanished. This is how you have to do because otherwise life becomes unbearable. Suffering
is too much. Really old age is real suffering. It’s only with Kṛṣṇa we can survive. In the beginning of our
work, we can tolerate the pangs because of Kṛṣṇa. Death pangs also we tolerate because of Kṛṣṇa,
otherwise you can’t tolerate. That’s why people go mad in the old age you know. They lose the consciousness.
Speech is gone, remembrance is gone. They remember only their youth days or whatever. They want to talk, there is
nobody to hear. So there is madness again. So don’t be that old man. You have with you Bhagavad Gita and
Bhagavatam, old age also will be very nice. And bound, the body is bound to go one day. It will go away anyway. So
don’t, don’t do these things. And for that the spiritual side must be very strong. That is our requirement. Our selfish
interest is there in Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavatam.
And again, if you really devote to Kṛṣṇa, your whole generation gets purified. Your grandchildren also know that,
"grandfather is building a temple. That’s why I am benefited." "I am not building, Kṛṣṇa is building." But they hear, they
see, so they, they pick up some thread. So, in their old age. they will do something like this. So, generations are
purified. Otherwise, the generations are going to dogs. (Appreciating a devotee who is having Bhagavatam sessions at
home) Now you are having Bhagavatam sessions. He is coming to you. So, children are watching, father is doing
something (Gurudev laughs), because they are restricted. They can’t play around, father is there. They are watching
you. Now when their time comes, they will definitely think, father was doing these things, it was much better you know
(Gurudev and devotees laugh). So, they will also do something. Without his telling, because he is doing.
My grandfather did not eat because Lalji was not there (Gurudev and devotees laugh). That is very clear in my mind
(Gurudev laughs). So many things he might have told, but I forgot everything. But this Lalji (incident) is very clear
(Gurudev laughs). They purify the generations by their own actions. This is how. We will have to stop here.
Our heartfelt thanks to Maharaj for his nectarean sublime, instructive and practical class.
