enhance their privileges.

Role of Emden

• Independent trading town


• Base for the league for further operations in East Frisia:
Emden played vital role in the mid 14th century to control the
North Sea and English trade
• In the 14th and 15th centuries constant conflicts of Emden
with the powerful Hanseatic League
• Reason: Support of the pirates around Klaus Störtebeker (by
Emden and other places in East Frisia such as Marienhafe)
• Consequences: Repeated occupation of Emden by Hanseatic
(especially Hamburg) forces.
• Leave of Hamburgers only 1447
After receiving punitive expedition chief Hisko changed the
side and handed over the Emden to Hanseatic troops.

• Various agreements between the cities like Lübeck,
Rostock and Wismar for security and for joint protection
against pirates, robbers and feudal lords
• In 1367 the league military action for the first time for
expansion of state
• Established great confederation with Norway, Sweden, and
important countries of Scandinavia to war against Denmark
• Offer of military forces, supplies and money by each town
compulsary; otherwise be expulsion from the league.
• Successful in navel and military operations, league captured
Copenhagen and most of the Danish town.

• After the treaty of Stralsund (1370) the Hanseatic League


• Dominated the region and maintained powerful position.

Conclusion to the Hanseatic League

• It is considered to have been the first super-regional


economic community of the world
• The league succeeded in developing permanent commercial
enclaves (Kontore) in many foreign cities
• The Hanseatic League collapsed in part due to a lack of
central control
• Cities preserved their links to the Hanseatic League even
after it has demolished. such as Lübeck, Hamburg, and
Bremen
