Strategy for the PURPOSE:
Establishing a superregional economic community
• By building lighthouses and training pilots to promote safe
navigation
• By organizing and controlling trade
• By winning commercial privileges
• By creating monopolies
• By establishing trading bases overseas.
• Primary trade of the league
• Staples from Russia and Poland to Flanders and England,
• Which in turn transported clothing and other manufactured products
eastward to the Slavs (e.g. Russia)
• Later: Opening to all former Hanseatic League members and cities
that hosted a Hanseatic konto
• Then: Trading of grain, timber, furs, tar, honey, food surpluses and

Defence Confederation

Rostock and Wismar for security and for joint protection
against pirates, robbers and feudal lords
• In 1367 the league military action for the first time for
expansion of state
• Established great confederation with Norway, Sweden, and
important countries of Scandinavia to war against Denmark
• Offer of military forces, supplies and money by each town
compulsary; otherwise be expulsion from the league.
• Successful in navel and military operations, league captured
Copenhagen and most of the Danish town.
