following:

i. the acceleration in the last 15 s; [2]

ii. the total distance travelled; [2]

iii. the total displacement; [2]

Question 2…continued

b) Car A and car B move toward each other as shown below.

𝒙𝑨𝟎

A 𝒙𝑩𝟎

If the accompanying graph of their motion is given with the positions 𝑥𝐵0 = 270 m and
𝑥𝐴0 = −35 m at 𝑡 = 0 𝑠 and car B has a constant speed of 20.0 m/s and car A begins from rest,
calculate the acceleration of car A. [4]

Question 3

a) A projectile is launched at an angle of 30° across level ground.

i. Is there any point along the trajectory where 𝑣 and 𝑎 are parallel to each other? If
so, where? [2]

ii. Is there any point along the trajectory where 𝑣 and 𝑎 are perpendicular to each
other? If so, where? [2]

iii. At its maximum height above the ground, what is the velocity? Explain your answer.

Question 3…continued

b) A ball is thrown up onto a roof, landing 4.00 s later at height ℎ = 20.0 m above the release
level as shown. The ball’s path just before landing is angled at 𝜃 = 60.0° with the roof.

i. Find the horizontal distance 𝑑 the ball travels. [3]

ii. What is the ball’s initial velocity? [4]

Question 4

a) Forces 𝑭⃑ 𝟏 and 𝑭
⃑ 𝟐 are applied to a lunchbox as it slides at a constant velocity over a
frictionless floor. We are to decrease angle  without changing the magnitude of 𝑭 ⃑ 𝟏.
For constant velocity, should we increase, decrease or maintain the magnitude of ⃑𝑭𝟐 .
Substantiate your answer. [3]

b) Is it possible for an object to be moving in one direction while the net force acting on it is in
another direction? If your answer is yes, provide an example. If your answer is no, explain
why not. [3]

Question 4…continued

c) In shot put, many athletes choose to launch the shot at

an angle that is smaller than the theoretical one at which
the distance of the projected ball at the same speed
and height is the greatest.
On reason has to do with the speed the athlete can give
the shot during the acceleration phase of the throw.

Assume that a 7.260 kg shot is accelerated along a straight path of length 1.650 m by a
constant applied force, starting with an initial speed of 2.50 m/s (due to the athlete’s
preliminary motion).
If the shot’s speed at the end of the acceleration phase of the motion is 12.76 m/s and the
angle between the path and the horizontal is 30.0°, what is the magnitude of the initial
constant applied force? [4]
