Course Title: Biostatistics in Midwifery

Course Description: This course aims to equip midwifery students with the foundational
knowledge and skills in biostatistics necessary for evidence-based practice. The course
covers basic statistical concepts, data analysis techniques, and the application of
statistical methods to research and practice in midwifery.
Week 1-2: Introduction to Biostatistics
 Definition and scope of biostatistics in healthcare
 Importance of statistical literacy in midwifery
 Overview of basic statistical concepts and terminology
 Historical perspectives on the use of statistics in midwifery research

Week 3-4: Descriptive Statistics

 Measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode)
 Measures of variability (range, variance, standard deviation)
 Frequency distributions and graphical representation of data
 Describing demographic characteristics in midwifery research

Week 5-6: Probability and Probability Distributions

 Basics of probability theory
 Probability distributions (binomial, normal)
 Understanding the role of probability in clinical decision-making
 Probability in assessing risk in midwifery practice

Week 7-8: Inferential Statistics - Part I

 Hypothesis testing: Null and alternative hypotheses
 Types of errors in hypothesis testing
 Confidence intervals and their interpretation
 Application of inferential statistics to midwifery research questions

Week 9-10: Inferential Statistics - Part II

 Parametric vs. non-parametric tests
 Analysis of variance (ANOVA) in midwifery studies
 Correlation and regression analysis in midwifery research
 Choosing the appropriate statistical test based on study design
Week 11-12: Research Design and Sampling
 Overview of research designs in midwifery studies
 Sampling techniques and their implications
 Sample size determination in midwifery research
 Ethical considerations in data collection and sampling

Week 13-14: Data Management and Analysis Software

 Introduction to data management principles
 Hands-on experience with statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R)
 Data cleaning, coding, and entry
 Basic data analysis using statistical software

Week 15-16: Interpretation and Communication of Statistical Findings

 Effect sizes and their importance
 Interpreting statistical results in midwifery research
 Communicating statistical findings to diverse audiences
 Addressing statistical literacy in patient education

Week 17-18: Application of Biostatistics in Midwifery Practice

 Integration of biostatistics into evidence-based practice
 Critical appraisal of research studies in midwifery
 Case studies and practical applications in midwifery care
 Future trends in the use of biostatistics in midwifery research
Assessment:
 Quizzes and assignments on basic statistical concepts
 Midterm and final exams covering descriptive and inferential statistics
 Research project involving data analysis and interpretation
 Class participation in discussions and statistical software workshops
Final Project:
Conduct a small-scale research project, including data collection, analysis, and
interpretation. Present findings in a written report and a class presentation.
