Workshop: Static Mixer


ANSYS Fluent Meshing with Watertight Geometry Workflow

Introduction

• Workshop Description

CAD files for a mixer will be imported into the


watertight geometry workflow and a volume
mesh will be generated. Both global and local
size controls will be used along with capping to
extract the fluid region

All instructions are not shown explicitly in the


slides – please watch the video for complete
details

Launch Fluent in Meshing Mode

• Open the Fluent Launcher by clicking the


Windows Start menu and selecting Fluent 19.2
in the Fluid Dynamics sub-menu of the ANSYS
19.2 program group
• Enable Meshing Mode under Options
• Set the Processing Option to serial
• Set Working Directory to
the area where files are
• Click OK to start Fluent
in meshing mode

Initialize Workflow And Import Geometry

• From the Workflow tab select


Watertight Geometry from the
Select Workflow Type drop down • Select Import Geometry in the workflow
menu • Set your units to mm
• Select
• Browse and select the file mixer-orig-r192.scdoc

Create Size Controls & Surface Mesh
• Under Add Local Sizing
• Select yes under Would you like to
add local sizing?
• Enter a name for your local sizing
• Select Local Face Size and Select By
label
• Select drum-holes from the label list
• Click Add Local Sizing with size = 2
• Add another sizing but this time
choose Body Of Influence and select
by zone choosing geom-boi:boi-solid
as the zone with size =15

• Under Create Surface Mesh


• Add the global size controls as shown
in the screenshot on the right
• Click Create Surface Mesh

Completed Surface Mesh

• After completion of the surface mesh choose the following options under Describe Geometry
• The geometry consists of only solid regions
• Yes under Will you cap …..?
• Yes under Change all fluid-fluid boundary ….?
• Click Describe Geometry

Create Caps

• Under Enclose Fluid Regions (Capping)


• Create 3 caps using labels
• Separate velocity inlets using labels in1 & in2
• Pressure outlet using label out1
• Click Enclose Fluid Regions (Capping) to apply each cap after entering its details

Create and Update Regions

Click Create Regions and Update Regions with default values as the number of expected
fluid regions =1 and region assignments are correct

Create and Inspect Volume Mesh

• Under Create Volume Mesh


• Leave default Boundary Layer Settings unchanged
• Uncheck Mesh Solid Regions
• Choose poly-hexcore under Fill With
• Click Create Volume Mesh
• After mesh completion inspect the mesh

Switch to Solution Mode
