1. How many types of Impairments/Disabilities that affect computer usage? Name them.
Ans: There are five types of impairments that affect computer usage.
a) Mobility or Motor or Dexterity Impairments
b) Vision Impairments
c) Hearing Impairments
d) Speech Impairments
e) Specific Learning or Cognitive Disabilities

2. Explain all types of impairments that impact computer usage.


Ans: a) Mobility OR Motor OR Dexterity Impairments - People with mobility Impairments
find it difficult to operate devices like keyboard and mouse etc.
b) Vision Impairments - People who are blind or have low vision or have colour
blindness cannot fully access visual material on computer
screen.
c) Hearing Impairments - People with hearing impairments cannot perceive the
audio contents.
d) Speech Impairments - People with speech impairments find it difficult where audio
input is required.
e) Specific Learning OR Cognitive Disabilities - Some people having learning disabilities
who are hyper- sensitive to background noise. Some people
with visual impairments cannot read small text sizes or bright
screens. Some suffers with Dysgraphia, inability to produce
handwriting reliably.

3. What do you understand by accessibility options? What is their need?


Ans: Accessibility options are the settings done on computer so that computer OS can take
input in different forms other than mouse and keyboard and provide output other than
monitor or printer form, e.g., input commands with voice.
Not all computer are equally abled. But ‘computers’ as a tool must be available for
all despite their visual or hearing or motor- skills impairments. Thus, modern day
computers come with accessibility options so that all can use computers with equal ease.
4. What all accessibility options are available on Windows OS?
Ans: Various accessibility options on Windows OS are: Narrator, Audio descriptions,
Magnifier, Speech recognition, Sticky Keys, and Filter Keys. These options can be set via
Ease of Access centre of Windows OS.

5. What is an Assistive Technology?


Ans: OS includes accessibility options and programs that make it easier to see, hear and use
your computer including ways to personalize your computer and use keyboard shortcuts.
It is known as Assistive Technology.

6. What is magnifier? How is it useful?


Ans: It is a special feature that makes part or the entire computer screen bigger so that the
user can see words and images better. It is used for people with vision issues as they can
see the screen in bigger size.

7. What is narrator? How is it useful?


Ans: It is a screen reading app which reads out aloud the text on the computer screen. It is
useful for people who are blind or have very low vision as they can hear the text on
screen in audio form.

8. What is closed captions feature?


Ans: Closed caption are textual representations of the audio in a TV program. For e.g., closed
captions can display the spoken dialog in a show, as well as non- verbal information, such
as music and sound effects.

9. What features are useful for people with low vision?


Ans: Narrator, make the mouse easier to use and Magnifier.

10.What features are useful for people with hearing loss?


Ans: Sound volume and closed captions.

11. What features are useful for people with speech impairment?
Ans: Presentation tools, Messaging tools, text-to-speech feature.

12. What features are useful for people with mobility issues?
Ans: Sticky Keys, filter keys and toggle keys.

13. Where the Accessibility options are available in computer system?


Ans: It is available in control panel.

14. What is On Screen Keyboard feature?


Ans: Keyboard with Sticky keys and Filter keys for people who have problem with motor skills
and hand movement.
15. What do you understand by “Set up high contrast”?
Ans: Set up high contrast on screen to optimize visual displays or make them more clear.

16. What are sticky keys?


Ans: It helps user who might have trouble pressing two keys at once. Sticky keys feature
enables the user to press a key, such as CTRL, SHIFT, or ALT and have it remain active
until another key is pressed.

17. What are Filter keys?


Ans: Filter keys lets user set the sensitivity of the keyboard so it can ignore brief or repeated
keystrokes.

18. What are Toggle keys?


Ans: Toggle keys mainly refer to the Caps Lock Key, the Num Lock Key and Scroll Lock Key .
Whatever you turn on/off you can hear a tone when you press the key.

19. What are Serial keys?


Ans: It is a feature that assists people that have difficulty using keyboard or a mouse. They can
use special devices such as Sip, Puff and Breath Switches to provide input to the
computer through Serial Ports.

20. What are Mouse keys feature?


Ans: It is a feature that lets you control movement of mouse using the numeric keypad.
