Do as directed.
1. Convert the following Celsius temperatures into Fahrenheit.
(a) 50 C (b) 200 C (c) 350 C
Ans. F=9/5C+32
(a) 5°C
𝐹=9/5(5) +32=9+32=41°𝐹
(b) 20°C
𝐹=9/5(20) +32=36+32=68°𝐹
(c) 350 C
𝐹=9/5(35) +32=63+32=95°𝐹
2. Convert the following Fahrenheit temperatures into Celsius.
(a) 680 F (b) 1040 F (c) 770 F
Ans. C=5/9(F−32)
(a) 68°F
𝐶=5/9(68−32)=5/9(36)=20°𝐶
(b) 104°F
𝐶=5/9(104−32)=5/9(72)=40°𝐶
(c) 77°F
𝐶=5/9(77−32)=5/9(45)=25°𝐶
3. Explain how a vacuum flask works with the help of a diagram.
Ans. A thermos flask is used to maintain the temperature of liquids kept in it. It keeps hot
liquids hot and cold liquids cold for a long time.
In a thermos flask, the silvered surfaces reflect radiated heat, vacuum prevents heat escaping
through convection and conduction and the insulated stopper reduces conduction.
4. Draw a coloured diagram and write how sea breeze results.
Ans. During the day, the land heats up faster than the sea. So, the air above the land becomes
warmer and rises upwards. The cooler air from above the sea rushes towards the land and takes
its place, resulting in a sea breeze during the day.
Give reasons:
1. A plastic handle is fitted to a frying pan.
Ans. Plastic is a poor conductor of heat it does not allow heat to pass through it. Hence, the
handle of the pan and cooking utensils is made up of plastic.
2. Hot water kept in a room cools after a while.
Ans. When a tumbler is filled with hot water, thermal energy flow from the tumbler to the
surrounding air. The transfer of heat continues until the hot water and the surrounding air have
same temperature.
3. Although a poor heat conductor, wood is not a good heat insulator.
Ans. Wood is a poor heat conductor and doesn't allow heat to pass through easily, but it is not a
good insulator because it can burn and catch fire easily.
4. A mercury clinical thermometer has a constriction.
Ans. A mercury clinical thermometer has a constriction as it prevents the mercury from moving
down once it has risen due to an increase in temperature.
5. Brick houses remain cool in summer and do not turn cold in winter.
Ans. A house made of bricks remains cool in summer and does not become cold in winter
because bricks are porous and trap air. The trapped air acts as an insulator, preventing heat
from entering the house during summer and from escaping during winter.
