Healing Concept

Healing is a holistic, transformative process of repair and recovery

in mind, body, and spirit resulting to positive change.
Valuing Process “Pagpapahalaga”

The Theory of Macrocosm(Kalawakan) and Microcosm(Sangkatauhan)

Filipino traditional healers believe that the universe (macrocosm-kalawakan)

and humankind (microcosm-sangkatauhan) are interlinked and intertwined.
Whatever happens in the universe has an effect on humankind and vice
versa. Thus, humankind must respect nature and the environment. Any
disrespectful or disruption of these basic positive relationship will lead to
disease, destruction, disaster or death.

Wellness Massage Module 3 Q1 15

Traditional Healing is generally considered the oldest healing art
by our Native Filipino. The “manghihilot” can identify what ailments a
person’s body is suffering from by using methods such as pulse
reading “pagpupulso” phremology, stool/urine/perspiration analysis,
and hot and cold analysis. This practiced has been from one
generation to another. They are passing the knowledge to their
relatives to another relative through hands-on practice.

HILOT

Hilot is an ancient art of Filipino healing by touch. It comes from a

Filipino term meaning healer. It is a traditional practice which is associated
with elder healers. Manghihilot is a person who performs the healing who
serves as the caregiver in the community. It is one of oldest forms of healing
in the Philippines. They act as midwife, a chiropractor, or massage therapist
to promote health and healing.

• Benefits of Hilot
- Resets dislocated/sprained joints
- Diagnose and treat musculoskeletal ailments
- Aids in giving birth and in recovering after delivery
- Relaxes stressed muscles
- Reduces muscle pain
- Relieves stress
- Improves circulation
- Improves skin appearance

• Common Ingredients used of Hilot Therapy

- Virgin Coconut Oil
- Warm Banana Leaves

Here in the Philippines, especially in the rural areas where

hospitals are hard to reach, they just depend with our albularyo and
manghihilot who are referred to as “general practioners” in most of the
barrios. They are said to be knowledgeable in most of the folkloric
modalities, usually versed in the used of medicinal herbs found in the area.

Wellness Massage Module 3 Q1 16

Suob is the Filipino version of the steam bath. It has
been utilized in various Filipino ethnic groups to drive
away elements of illnesses (like the lamig) by boiling a
mixture of salt, herbs and flowers and letting the
therapeutic mixture vaporize inside a large thick cloth
that envelops the body. Suob is also a ritual of
postpartum care performed by magpapaanak two to
three weeks after childbirth. They believe it hasten the
mother's return to health and healing of her obstetrical
wounds. http://www.stuartxchange.com/Suob.html

During this time of pandemic, some of the Filipino survivors believed that steam therapy
or “suob” helped them recover from the virus. It is done by inhaling salt water on a basin while
using a piece of cloth to cover one’s head and shoulders and enclose the steam. According to
them, a week after being affected they feel better.
However, pediatric pulmonologist and sleep specialist Dr. Rolando dela Eva said there
was no strong evidence to prove that steam therapy helps cure COVID-19

ALBULARYO – is a “witch doctor” commonly found in rural areas here in

the Philippines. It is a tradition and because of chronic economic
constraints, the albularyos are the general practitioners, the primary
dispensers of health care. As with other healers, there is usually a history of
a healer in the family-line, their healing a continuum of a "calling," the
power or ability bestowed by a supernatural being, often, attributed to the
Holy Spirit. Often lacking in formal education, his skills are based on and
honed from hand-me-down practices and lore, with a long period of
understudy or apprenticeship with a family elder or a local healer. People
tend to go to them because of financial. Most of them don’t ask for any
amount of money. One of the reason also is that hospitals are very far from
the barrios.

How is it performed?
Each albularyo has their unique way of healing. Here are some
examples of those.
 bulong and orasyon
 use of herbal medicinal plants
 art of pulse taking as diagnosis.

You can watch this documentary for more examples.
