THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE GETTING STARTED:

Basic stitches used:

- blanket stitch - whipstitch - backstitch

Materials needed:
FELT: For this project, I’ve used wool blend felt (40% wool), 1 mm thick.
Colours I’ve used:
❤ Clouds: ivory (neutral) white
❤ Rainbow and raindrops: red, mustard, pale yellow, sea green, pale lilac, baby blue

THREADS:
❤ simple sewing thread (same colors as felt + black)
❤ black embroidery thread (floss, 6 strands)
❤ thin cotton crochet thread in baby blue (to hang the ornaments)

OTHER:
❤ polyester toy stuffing (as poly-fil)
❤ 4x ivory white needlefelted balls, 2 cm Ø
❤ hot glue gun
❤ 12x black rounded “rocailles” glass beads, 4 mm Ø
❤ pink powder blush
❤ cotton bud
❤ needles
❤ pins
❤ sharp embroidery scissors
❤ paper and printer.

Step 1.
Print all the templates full-size and cut them out.
Pin rainbow paper templates on felt as following:
- n.1 to red felt and cut out 2x pieces;
- n.2 to mustard felt and cut out 2x pieces;
- n.3 to pale yellow felt and cut out 2x pieces;
- n.4 to sea green felt and cut out 2x pieces;
- n.5 to pale lilac felt and cut out 2x pieces.
Pin mustard piece on red piece and sew using whipstitch along the curved edge only. Repeat
with all rainbow pieces, as pictured. Pin template n. 6 on pale lilac piece and cut out through
all 5 layers of felt, one layer at a time. (TIP: Keep the scraps of felt as you’ll need them to make
the raindrops).

Step 2.
Pin the rainbow to a piece of baby blue felt and whipstitch along the curved edge of red felt
(the arrows points the first and last stitches).

Sew along the bottom edge in pale lilac thread, using whipstitch (the arrow shows where to
start sewing).

Step 3.
Trim off the baby blue felt leaving a 3 mm border. Cut a length of baby blue crochet thread, tie
a knot on one end, poke the needle into the felt on the back of the rainbow and tie the ends
together to make a hanging loop.

Step 4.
Repeat all the steps to make a second rainbow. Overlap both rainbows and trim the edges to
make the rainbows match perfectly. Sew the rainbows together in matching thread, using
blanket stitch.

Step 5.
Pin the cloud template on ivory white felt and cut out 1x cloud piece. Use it as a template to
cut out a second cloud.

Step 6.
Take one cloud piece and backstitch a smiling mouth with 3 strands of black embroidery
thread. Overlap front and back clouds and sew them together using blanket stitch and
matching thread. Start from the top of the cloud and leave a 2 cm opening to insert the
stuffing. Sew up the gap.

Step 7.
To add the eyes, poke the needle with black thread in between the blanket stitches on the side
of the cloud. Hide the knot of black thread inside the cloud.

Add the black beads (the eyes) as pictured. Secure the thread with a hidden knot under the
bead.
(Both eyes are sewn using the same thread.)

Step 8.
Use a cotton bud to tap a bit of pink powder blush below the eyes, to make the cheeks.
Repeat steps from 5 to 8 to make a second cloud.

Step 9.
Use some pins to outline the clouds on the rainbow, so you’ll know exactly where to glue them.
REMEMBER: You need to be quick and precise with hot glue, as it can’t be removed from felt!
Apply a thin layer of hot glue to the cloud’s top, as pictured (at a distance of at least 5 mm from
the edges), place the cloud on the rainbow with a gentle pressure and hold still for about 15
seconds. Remove the pins and repeat with the other cloud.

Step 10.
Use the raindrop paper templates to cut out 2x felt
raindrops of each colour (use the felt scraps from
the rainbow pieces). Take a piece of white thread,
tie a knot on one end and add it to one raindrop
piece, sewing it into the felt (don’t sew all the way
through the felt). Overlap both raindrop pieces and
sew together using blanket stitch (don’t stuff). Finish
with a small knot at the back. Repeat this step to
make all the raindrops.

Step 11.
Repeat step 5. Embroider the mouth to one cloud piece and add 3 raindrops by knotting their
hanging thread to the other cloud piece, as pictured (again, do not sew through the felt
completely). Sew the raindrops at different lengths. Add the baby blue hanging crochet thread
the same way.

Step 12.
Repeat steps 7 and 8 to make all the clouds. Finish with a white needlefelted ball on each
hanging thread.
