NAME: DATE: / /

Textual typology: "fable”

Objective: Apply reading comprehension strategies related to locating, interpreting and predicting words and
information in context.

A long time ago, in a distant forest there lived a very proud and vain hare,
who never stopped boasting that she was the fastest of all animals.
that she was the fastest of all the animals.
She always made fun of the slowest animals like the tortoise. One day, the
tortoise could not stand the hare's mockery any longer, and it occurred to
him to make her an unusual proposal:
-I'm sure I can win a race for you.
-Me? -asked the hare in astonishment.
-Yes," said the tortoise, "Let's see who wins the race.
The hare, very confident, agreed. The owl, the deer and many other
animals gathered to watch this race.
Confident in his lightness, the hare let the tortoise take the lead and stood
there mocking him. Then it began to run fast and overtook the tortoise,
which was walking slowly but steadily. Halfway along the path, the hare
stopped to rest in a green meadow
to rest in a lush green meadow. There he fell asleep, while the tortoise kept
on walking, step by step, slowly, but without stopping,
slowly, but without stopping.
When the hare woke up, he saw that the tortoise was only a short distance
from the goal. He ran with all his might, but it was too late, the tortoise had
won the race!
All the animals were smiling and celebrating the victory, while the hare
was crying at the finish line.
Moral of the story: never make fun of others and overconfidence can be an
obstacle to achieving our goals.
Félix María de Samaniego, Fables (Adaptation)
