Assignment Title:
Develop Personal Learning Skills
Assessment Method
Written Question and Answer
Written Description
Assignment Description
Study skills are learning strategies that help us organise, process, and use information effectively. These skills
are important, not just for academic studies, but they also help us in everyday life. Throughout our lives, we are
bombarded with information which we need to process and use yet quite often, we don’t use this information
effectively.
Our ability to remember information and to use it, largely depends on our needs and preferences. Each of us
have a ‘learning style’ that helps explain how we naturally use our senses to learn: our eyes, our ears and so on.
This assignment looks at learning styles and how ‘active learning’ is the key ingredient to get the most out of your
time during studies.
In order to achieve a pass, you must evidence each task as outlined below. This assignment should take
no more than 3 hours.
1. When you identify your learning styles, you may find that they change based on what you are learning. For
example, for a practical hands-on task, you may find you still cannot follow along until you have seen the written
instructions. On another occasion, you may find that the written instructions are harder to understand than a
visual demonstration. You should be flexible in how you learn, so that you can use the methods that suit you at
the time. Sometimes, there are external factors such as deadlines, which will also affect – perhaps restrict – the
amount of opportunity you have available to try different methods.
Ultimately, it is your responsibility to manage your learning. Nobody can do it for you in the long term. You have to
manage your learning during your studies and during your work and career. In preparation for academic study, it
is important to identify your own learning styles and preferences. To show that you can do this, complete the
worksheet: How to meet my learning needs. (Criteria 1.1)
Assessment briefing and feedback sheet
The following example should help you understand how to answer the questions in plain English.
Example
o Question: During a live presentation, where you are in the audience, how can you take
action to catch up on a portion of the presentation that you missed? You may have missed
parts due to a comfort break, or a lapse in concentration.
o Example Answer: My preference is to not disturb the flow of the presentation. I would make
note of the slide that the speaker was on when I left the room, or some other note about what
the speaker was saying. I would then ask the question at the end: “I was out for 5 minutes
when you were speaking about X topic, could you give me some pointers on what I
missed?”. As I am an auditory learner, I think listening to the speaker is important for me. If
they do not have time to repeat what they said, I can use my visual learning style and ask the
speaker to show me the slides that I missed.
2. For your learning to go from strength to strength, you must sustain motivation. Motivation is linked strongly to
whether you understand and believe in the benefits of what you are doing. Within the worksheet of the previous
task (How to meet my learning needs), you will find space to complete the below two tasks.
Part A
List at least 3 benefits of active engagement in learning. Each benefit should be 20 – 40 words. The example
below should help you.
(Criteria 1.2 a)
Example
o By listening actively, I can enjoy the experience of being in the audience as I hear their
questions and can think of my own questions to improve my thinking skills.
Part B
List at least 3 benefits of working with others. Each benefit should be 20 – 40 words. The example below
should help you.
(Criteria 1.2 b)
Example
o By working in a team to solve a problem, I can learn from others and produce work that is
more thorough using collective knowledge.
Upload your finished work as a .pdf that is published from your editor. If you are unable to produce a .pdf, you can
ask for help with this.
