ABSTRACT

Insect pests pose significant threats to agricultural productivity, food security, and
ecosystem stability. Traditional methods for monitoring and managing insect populations often
involve labour-intensive field surveys, manual observation, and chemical interventions, which
can be costly, time-consuming, and environmentally detrimental. This abstract introduces a
novel approach utilizing drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and advanced imaging
technologies for the automated detection and monitoring of insect pests in agricultural
landscapes. By flying over crop fields and capturing aerial imagery, drones provide a bird's-
eye view of insect populations, allowing for rapid and comprehensive surveillance across large
spatial scales. Image processing algorithms, including machine learning techniques, are
employed to analyse drone-captured images and identify insect pests based on their visual
features and behavioural patterns. The integration of drone technology with automated insect
detection algorithms offers several advantages, including enhanced spatial coverage, real-time
monitoring capabilities, and reduced reliance on chemical pesticides. Furthermore, drones
facilitate targeted interventions by enabling precise identification of pest hotspots and timely
deployment of control measures, thereby minimizing crop damage and optimizing resource
allocation. By harnessing the potential of drone-based insect detection, farmers, researchers,
and policymakers can make informed decisions to mitigate pest pressures, improve agricultural
sustainability, and safeguard global food supplies in an increasingly challenging and dynamic
environment.
