What is Biodiversity?
Biodiversity means the variety of life on
Earth, including all living things in different
environments like land, sea, and other water
systems. It includes the differences within
species, between species, and among
ecosystems.
LEVELS OF

BIODIVERSITY: Genetic Diversity
variances in the genetic content of individuals
belonging to the same species

Species Diversity
variety and abundance of distinct sorts of
individuals of a species in a given area

Ecological Variety
SPECIES numerous types of ecosystems within a
ECOSYSTEM geographical place, including both terrestrial
DIVERSITY and aquatic ecosystems
Genetic Diversity
Describes the unique characteristics and
features found in species. Specifically, it
refers to the diversity of a species' gene
pool, or diversity at the DNA level.

The diversity of life has: Intrinsic

Value
served as a support system
enabled different civilizations
in history to flourish
represents the very
foundation of human existence.
A. Utilitarian Value
The utilitarian value of biodiversity is
determined by its practical use or application.

Biological Resources

1. Source of Food
Biodiversity in Modern Agriculture:
(i) as a source of new crops
(ii) as a source material for breeding improved
varieties
(iii) as a source of new biodegradable pesticides.
2. Medicine 10 Halamang Gamot
Biodiversity serves as a source
for numerous plants, animals, and
microorganisms that contribute
to the creation of medicines.
Different species provide
compounds used in
pharmaceuticals, offering
treatments for various illnesses.
3. Energy
Various ecosystems contribute to renewable
energy sources.
Plant species - bioenergy production
Forests and wetlands - supports sustainable
energy options.

sustainable transportation or generating
thermal or electrical energy
4. Aesthetic and Cultural Benefits
Biodiversity enriches the visual and cultural tapestry of our
surroundings.
Diverse ecosystems provide scenic landscapes, vibrant
colors, and a variety of flora and fauna that contribute to
the beauty of our environments.
5. Ecosystem services
Biodiversity provides a wide range of benefits
that support life. It contributes to essential
services like pollination, water purification,
soil fertility, and regulation of climate
B. INTRINSIC Value
refers to the inherent right of species to
exist
Biodiversity is part of the natural world

Every species is a product of a long

history of continuing evolution by
means of ecological processes, and so
it has the right to a continued
existence.
IMPORTANCE OF BIODIVERSITY TO
SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY
&SOCIETY
Biodiversity is vital for science because it
gives us a wide range of living things to study,
helping us learn more about life, and come up
with new technologies or inventions. It also
sparks creativity in developing new solutions
and materials.
It is the key to scientific discoveries, new
inventions, and making sure our world is a
great place to live.
