(Long question) (8 to 10 marks)

1.A nominal distance of 30 meters was set out with a 30 m steel tape from a mark on the top of

one peg to a mark on the top of another, the tape being in catenary under a pull of 10 kg and at a

mean temperature of 750 F. The top of one peg was 0. 4 meter below the top of the other. The top

of the higher peg was 365 meters above mean sea level. Take radius of earth = 6370 km, Density

of tape = 6.26 g/cm3, cross-section of tape = 0.05 sq.cm, Co-efficient of expansion= 6.3x10-6 per 10

F, Young’s modulus= 2.1x106 kg/cm2. Calculate the exact horizontal distance between the marks

on the two pegs and reduce it to mean sea level, if the tape was standardized at a temperature of

700F, in catenary, under a pull of

(a) 9 kg

(b) 11 kg

(c) 15 kg
2.The following perpendicular offsets were taken at 8m intervals from a survey line to an irregular

boundary line: 6.33,3.25,2.78, 5.60,2.63, 4.20, 9.65,6.65, 8.75,10,6.20,3.25,4.20,1.01,5.65. Calculate the

area, by the application of

(a) average ordinate rule

(b) trapezoidal rule and

(c) Simpson’s rule.


3. The following consecutive staff readings were observed with a level and 5m staff on a

continuously sloping ground at regular intervals of 15m as 0.835, 1.030, 1.925, 2.825, 3.730, 4.685,

0.625, 2.005, 3.110, 4.485m. The instrument was changes after 7th & 11th reading. The first reading

was taken at a B.M of elevation 123.45m. Enter the readings in a level book format and reduce the

levels. Apply the checks and Calculate the gradient of the slope. b) Calculate the missing entries

and the corresponding reduced level. Check the result.

4. An observer standing on the deck of a ship just sees the lighthouse. The top of the lighthouse

is 42m above the sea level and the observer’s eye is 6m above the sea level. Find how far he is

from lighthouse. b) The areas within the contour line at the site of reservoir and the face of the

proposed dam are as follows. Calculate capacity of reservoir


5. The following perpendicular offsets were taken at 5m intervals from a survey line to an

5. The following staff readings were observed during the leveling carried out for drainage works.

Cross section readings were taken at 0, 10 & 20m. The pipeline should have a gradient of 1 in

40m. Calculate the excavation/fill quantities for the drainage trench. Provided depth of trench
