Irrigation Engineering group Assignments

Target group: Civil 5th year (extension)

Maximum mark (20%)
By: Bizuneh Mekonen

1. What are the various structures in irrigation network starts from the water source up to
the irrigated field? Define each structure, elaborate purpose or functions of each structure
and show each structure with figures /pictures.
2. Design a drip irrigation system using the following data
 Crop type: Banana
 Spacing 1.5*1.35 m b/n lateral and b/n emitter respectively
 Area: 1ha (100*100 m)
 Slope: 0.3 to 0.4%
 Water source: well
 Static head: 10m
 Pan evaporation: 12m/day
 Crop coefficient: 1
 Reduction factor: 0.7
 Soil characteristics:
o Clay soil
o Field capacity: 48%
o Wilting point: 25%
o Bulk density: 1.3g/cm3
o Effective root zone depth: 60cm
 Wetted area: 60%
 Maximum pump discharge: 2.5l/se
 Assume one emitter irrigate one plant and emitter capacity is 4l/hr
 Assume any necessary data that you haven’t given
3. A watershed of 1500 hectares is discharging through a drain at an average ratio of 2.5
m3/s. Calculate the drainage coefficient. If the drainage coefficient is 3 cm, what would
be the discharge through the drain?
4. In an agricultural area, high water table condition occurs. A subsurface drainage
system is to be installed to control the water table under the following
conditions:
a. Agricultural drainage criteria:
i. Design discharge rate is 1 mm/day
ii. The depth of the water table midway between the drains is to be kept
at 1.0 m below the soil surface.
b. Technical criteria:
i. Drains will be installed at a depth of 2 m;
ii. PVC drain pipes with a radius of 0.10 m will be used

Field investigation revealed that there is a layer of low conductivity at 6.8 m depth, which
can be regarded as the base of the flow region (Fig. above). Auger-hole method was used
to calculate the hydraulic conductivity of the soil above the impervious layer and its
average value was found to be 0.14 m/day. Calculate the spacing of pipe drains.
5. Given the following information,

Intake family, IF = 0.3

Furrow length, L = 275m

Furrow slope, s = 0.004 m/m

Roughness coefficient, n = 0.04

Net irrigation depth, in = 75mm

Inflow rate, Q = 0.6 s

Compute the desired time to cut – off, Tco , the equivalent depths of surface run off and deep
percolation, dro, ddp, and the distribution pattern efficiency.
