A weather map is used to display large amounts of information in a condensed and easy-to-read manner. Meteorologists use weather maps to forecast and display current and future weather conditions. Weather maps and symbols are used to analyze the weather because it is easier to absorb a lot of information if you can see it in a picture. Weather maps can cover many different aspects of weather, including wind speeds, temperatures, and precipitation. A weather map uses specific symbols to represent these weather events and describe their characteristics. This lesson will look deeper into weather map symbols included on weather maps and what they mean. © scanned with OKEN Scanner Analyzing Weather with Weather Symbols The branch of science concerned with the study of Earth's atmosphere and weather is called meteorology. Therefore, a meteorologist is a scientist who researches the conditions of Earth's atmosphere to make predictions about the weather. This process of weather prediction is called forecasting. Forecasting involves the analysis of radar and satellite data, so weather conditions like temperature and visibility can impact the accuracy of weather forecasting. Weather station model symbols are used to display weather information as a result of weather forecasting. © Scanned with OKEN Scanner Cloud Cover and Wind Direction Symbols Cloud cover symbols in a station model are divided into a tenths system. Shaded circles are used to designate how much coverage is present in the sky. For example, a circle that is half-way shaded in would represent a sky that is five tenths covered in clouds. Wind direction symbols are shown by a symbol known as a wind barb. How to read wind direction symbols is very simple. A wind barb is a straight line that has lines or pennants on the end to signify wind speed. Wind speed symbols could include a wind barb with one line at the end means the wind speed is around 9-14 miles per hour. A wind barb with one pennant at the end means the wind is 55-60 miles per hour. Wind direction is shown by the direction the wind barb is pointing in. © scanned with OKEN Scanner Other Meteorological Symbols Weather maps also contain other meteorological symbols that can be used to represent weather phenomenon. An isobar is used to show areas of air pressure, while areas of high and low pressure are shown using capital letters "H" and "L’. Also, weather fronts are displayed on weather maps using colored lines with different symbols. High-Pressure and Low-Pressure Systems A high pressure system is an area where the center has a higher air pressure than areas around it. High pressure systems generally bring in stable weather and clear skies and move from the northwest to southeast. On a weather map, a high pressure system is symbolized using a capital letter "H". On the other hand, a low pressure system is an area where the center has a lower air pressure than areas around it. Low pressure systems bring precipitation and cloudy skies and move from southwest to the northeast. A capital "L' is displayed on a weather map in areas of low pressure systems. © Scanned with OKEN Scanner Table 13.5: Types of Meteorological Symbols to denote Weather Elements (as approved by International Meteorological Organisation, Warsaw, Poland in 1935). 0 Pure Air g Shower of Snow | CD | Glazed Frost 4, | Shower of Rain ; co [tee Vi aisnowistecty VV Soft Rime — Ge [a SSS | forvetkm A smaltat | PN Gale | = a | =| smotowse | | mt | © | ‘sive ~ < 7 Distant t 1 | < Ughtning © | Solar Halo === | Frostrog | TZ Thunderstorm |G ___Lunar Halo ; Drifting Snow | | Solar 3 | ene | (igh wo) _ © | _corone | Lunar e Rain te Snowstorm WY conena - 7 Drifting Snow Snow | (Near the oN Rainbow as ow [oe es S | 7 pustor | Aurora | >< Steet | SS santorm | | poveate ZS _ Granular snow | € Dust Devil = <> | Mirage re Zodiacal JA Grains oftce | [x] snow tying | ry — | keneedies Dew | = | | Z| shower of Rain Hoar Frost | © scanned with OKEN Scanner Weather, Cloud Type, and Numbers Also present on a station model are symbols to represent the type of weather occurring in the given location. For example, asterisk symbols are used to symbolize snow while three horizontal lines are used to signify fog. What do clouds symbolize on a station model? There are a variety of symbols used to represent all of the different types of weather. Another piece of information on a station model are the cloud types. These symbols also vary, but one example is the low cumulus cloud, which is symbolized by a half-circle image. Another example is the thin altostratus cloud, which is symbolized by a triangle with one missing side. © Scanned with OKEN Scanner Lesson Summary A weather map is used to display large amounts of information about the weather using images and symbols.
