1.4 (exam pre-2020) Cubic numbers &

cube roots
Cubic numbers
When you multiply a whole number by itself and then multiply by itself again, the answer
is a cubic number.

For example, 2 × 2 × 2 = 23 = 8

Click here for more information about index notation.

The rst ve cubic numbers are:

1 1 × 1 × 1 or 13

8 2 × 2 × 2 or 23

27 3 × 3 × 3 or 33

64 4 × 4 × 4 or 43

125 5 × 5 × 5 or 53

Cube roots

means the cube root of.

The cube root of a number, when cubed, produces the given number.

Examples
1728 = 12 × 12 × 12 OR 12 cubed OR 123

And so the cube root of 1728 is 12.

The table below shows some cubic numbers.

Use a calculator
Many cube roots cannot be written exactly as a whole number, fraction or decimal. These
roots are called surds. They are irrational numbers and their decimal places go on forever
without repeating a pattern. Use a calculator to approximate the root, rounding o the
answer.

Di erent calculators have various ways of nding cube roots. Some are shown below.

OR OR

Example

The calculator answer shows 3.6840314 ...

So is about 3.7

Split larger numbers

Some cube roots can be found by breaking the number up into factors which are cubes.

EXAMPLE
Find .

SOLUTION

Use prime factors

To nd a cube root, break the number into its prime factors and use one factor from each
triple.

Apply order of operations

As with square roots, follow the order of operations when working with cube roots.
Complete calculations inside brackets before those outside.

The radical sign acts like brackets, so do calculations within cube root signs before taking
the cube root.

EXAMPLE
Find .

SOLUTION
Do the calculation under the radical sign rst:

= =2
