ABC- LONG SPAN RCC BEAM

What is a long span structure?

What we consider long-span structures are structures with spans larger than 20 meters. The most common types of long
span structures are trusses, folded plates, shell structures, frames, tent structures, or tensile structures. Also, another
alternative for large-span structures is the diagrid systems commonly used in high-rise buildings. Long span structures are
architectural or engineering constructions that feature a significant span or distance between supports without the need for
intermediate columns or supports. These structures are designed to carry loads over large areas or spaces, providing open
and unobstructed interior environments. They are commonly used in various applications such as stadiums, arenas, exhibition
halls, airports, transportation facilities, and other large-scale buildings. The use of long span beams results in a range of
benefits, including flexible, column-free internal spaces, reduced foundation costs, and reduced steel erection times. · Many
longs pan solutions are also well adapted to facilitate the integration of services without increasing the overall floor depth

Pros
Create unobstructed spaces | Reduces substructure cost
Less time consuming | Column free internal spaces

Cons
• General cost : Steel structures may be more costly than other types of structures, and other materials are cheap from
steel. Therefore more cost of steel is disadvantages of steel
• Susceptibility to buckling: Due to high strength/weight ratio, steel compression members is in general more slender and
consequently more susceptible to buckling than, say, reinforced concrete compression members. As a result,
considerable materials may have to be used just to improve the buckling resistance of slender steel compression
members.
What are a long span RCC Beam types?
These beams are reinforced with steel bars to enhance their tensile strength. Reinforced concrete beams are widely used in
buildings, bridges, and infrastructure projects due to their durability and versatility. They provide excellent structural support
and are capable of bearing heavy loads. These beams play a crucial role in distributing the weight of the structure and
ensuring its stability and safety.

Urban Podium In Rotterdam
Architect- Atelier Kempe Thill
Year- 2009
Atelier Kempe Thill's design for the Urban Podium in Rotterdam is a stunning example of contemporary long-span
architecture. It was completed in 2009 and has a total span of 120 m. The Urban Podium is used as a public space for events
and performances, and its spacious interior can accommodate large crowds. It has two open stage public squares and
pavilions. The podium was entirely constructed in concrete and steel. A pre-stressed concrete construction forms the free-
span roof, allowing for an exceptionally thin slab with thicknesses of 50cm towards the edges and 75cm in the center. The
use of extremely large formwork boards (10m x 2,5m) helped reduce visible joints to an absolute minimum. In pre-stressed
concrete, compression is induced before loading in the zones where external loads would normally cause tensile stresses. In
the case of long beams, where large shear forces exist, the beam sizes have to be large to limit the diagonal tensile stresses
under certain limits. Pre-stress decreases diagonal tensile stresses. This has led to adopt modified I-sections and T-sections in
which there is a substantial reduction in web area.
