Assignment 1
1. The screen analysis shown in Table below applies to a sample of crushed quartz. The density
of the particles is 2650 kg/m3(0.00265 g/mm3), and the shape factors are a = 2 and ∅𝑠 = 0.571.
Then, calculate:
A. The unknown mass fraction retained on top of 200 mesh.
B. The volume - mean diameter
C. The mass – mean diameter
D. The number of particles for the 200-mesh increment.
E. The surface area for the 200-mesh increment.
3. A cylindrical bridge pier that is 40 m tall and 1.0 diameter is submerged to a depth of 10 m.
Water in the river is flowing past at a velocity of 1 m/s. The density and viscosity of water
is 1000 kg/m3 and 1.0 cp, respectively. Calculate:
A. The value of the Reynolds number
B. The drag force on the submerged section of the pier.
4. A sample core of a porous rock obtained from an oil reservoir is 8 cm long and has a diameter
of 2.0 cm. It is placed in a core holder. With a pressure drop of 1.0 atm, the water flow at
20.2°C through the core was measured as 2.60 cm 3/s. What is the permeability in darcy?
5. Show that the terminal velocity (𝑢𝑡 ) for spherical particle is given by:
6. Show that for very small Reynolds number (𝑁𝑅𝑒 ), the terminal velocity is given by the
following formula:
𝐷𝑝2 𝑔(𝜌𝑝 − 𝜌)
𝑢𝑡 =
18𝜇
7. A sphere is held in a small wind tunnel where air at 37.8°C and 1 atm abs and various
velocities is forced by the sphere having a diameter of 0.042 m.
A. Determine the drag coefficient and force on the sphere for a velocity of 2.30 x 10- 4
m/s. Use Stokes' law here if it is applicable.
B. Also determine the force for velocities of 2.30 x 10- 3, 2.30 X 10- 2, 2.30 X10- 1, and
2.30 m/s. Make a plot of 𝐹𝐷 versus velocity.
8. A sphere of diameter 10 𝜇𝑚 and density 7700 kg m-3 falls under gravity at terminal
conditions through a liquid of density 900 kg m-3 a tube of diameter 12 mm. The measured
terminal velocity of the sphere was 1.6 mm/s. Calculate:
A. The viscosity of the fluid.
B. Verify that the Stokes' law applies.
