ABSTRACT

Social Media has been known ever since. Lots of people really liked it to the extent

that almost everyone uses it every day in their life, but a great thing has a great

responsibility and applications like this have their own downfalls too. With a lot of people

engaging in this social community, violence went in the way. A lot of people

experienced the bad treatment online and by that, it affected their mental health. This

study is conducted to know how this kind of community in online works and how it can

be solved.

The primary goal of this paper is to get prior information about the effects of being

violence online to a learner’s mental health and to pre-determine whether there were

pre-existing cases like this at Talospatang National High School.

By doing so, a survey questionnaire was employed using an Online Google Form

for learners to participate in it and for the researchers to collect datas regarding the

study.

Furthermore, this paper contains elaborate knowledge and background regarding

The Effects Of Social Media Violence To The Mental Health Of Senior High Students In

Talospatang National High School 2022-2023. This study confirmed that some of the

learners experienced serious cases like this.

CHAPTER l

THE PROBLEM

Background of the Study

Social Media is increasing in our country and in the world and changing the lives

of humanity. Modern technology has turned the world into a global village, but like a

coin, technology has both positive and negative effects on each individual.

Most students in Talospatang National High School have their own social media

accounts. Using social media platforms is part of a student's daily life. They take

pictures of themselves, their activities, their favorite foods and their whole day life then

post it. They can also use this to express their thoughts and feelings. Using social

media in your daily life now is a must. The purpose of social media is not about seeking

information, mostly, it is now all about getting new friends and connecting with them

everyday. Keeping in touch with your friend and relative, stalking the people that you

adore, reading the opinion of other people to every issue that is happening in our

society, and you can also have enemies or haters on social media.

Social media violence refers to the violence that occurs in social media
platforms that cause an individual's unpleasant emotional and mood responses to its

experiences. Someone who experienced various forms of violence on social media,

such as tension and worry, or they were afraid of their identity as humans on this kind of

social media violence, victimization/cyberbullying. Participating in social media can lead

to an obsession that results in undesirable behaviors. This virtual technique of talking

with one another does not result in a natural friendly experience and, as a result, cannot

build good relationships with those individuals.

In seven nations, the cultural generalization versus uniqueness of media violence

impacts on aggressiveness was investigated in Australia, China, Croatia, Germany,

Japan, Romania, the United States. Participants reported aggressive behaviors, media

consumption habits, and a variety of other established risk and protective variables for

aggressiveness. Exposure to violent screen media was positively and significantly

associated with aggressive across nations. This impact was moderated in part by

cognitive performance and empathy.

The outcome of the anxiety does not only affect the student's well being but also

their future career as professionals. With no doubt, social media violence is a recurring

problem for the learners which will negatively affect their mental health and future

career.

The researchers conducted this study to know if there are students who have

experienced social media violence and the effects of it on their mental health.

Furthermore, researchers also want to know how social media violence can be prevent

or can be solve.
Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored from the theoretical support of the relevant theories. First,

understanding why and how violent social media causes aggression. Is critical in

understanding the scientific studies showing violence in electronic media as a threat to

society. Indeed, psychological theories explaining why social media violence is such a

problem are now well-established. Furthermore, these ideas explain why witnessing

violence in the actual world among family members, friends, and members of the

community triggers aggressive conduct in the victim.

Next, effects of cyberbullying as opposed to regular bullying on children and

adolescents Vaillancourt et al. (2017). Psychological well-being after controlling for

traditional bullying, they found that cyberbullying is associated with anxiety, depression,

suicide attempts, somatic complaints and poor physical health, symptoms of post-

traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and academic difficulties. Therefore, cyberbullying is

a branch of bullying except it is done using the internet to abuse.

Cyberbullying is a quick and easy way to satisfy various needs, including

asserting power, gaining satisfaction or prestige, acting out aggression, fantasies online,

retailing after being bullied, looking cool and tough, and satisfying jealousy, all of which

can be accomplished with such little risk of being caught. Cyberbullies takes risk only to

satisfy themselves and torture individuals they envy. They want others to feel despair
like what they have experienced before. Cyberbullying takes place anywhere and

anytime and it does not only affect the mental health of the student but also their

physical health and academic performance that results poorly.

Conceptual Framework

Independent Variable Dependent Variable

Figure 1 presents the conceptual framework of the study. It consists of two

variables, social media violence as an independent variable and the mental health of

the students as the dependent variable.

In Figure 1, social media violence as an independent variable pertains to the

inappropriate mental health that affects sudents can experience while being exposed to

the wide scope of the internet, especially in social media. This clearly means that a

certain social media application can influence in causing an aggressive and violent

behaviors to someone who uses it such as in bullying, stalking, online sexual

harassment and more. And somehow, it affects someone’s well being too, most
certainly in their psychosocial behavior that it leads them into having a deteriorated

thinking and passive, unassertive interactions to a group of people.

Therefore, it refers to the psychological and social aspect of a learner in which

they converse about the way they think mentally and emotionally and how they socially

engage in a group or socialization. This is often identified too as the development of a

certain being to itself and their nature - to see how they adapt with their environment.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Foreign Literature

According to Elsaesser (2021), The deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in

January exposed the power of social media to influence real-world behavior and incite

violence. But many adolescents, who spend more time on social media than all other

age groups, have known this for years. Arguments on social media can quickly escalate

from minor issues to major ones. In other words, social media is not just reflecting

conflicts on the streets and in schools; it's also escalating and sparking new ones. The

average American teen uses screens for more than seven hours per day, and they use

three different social media platforms daily. Films like "The Social Dilemma" highlight

how social media companies purposefully design addictive platforms, utilizing elements

like infinite scrolling and push notifications to keep users engaged.

According to Gansner (2017), Numerous news organizations reported the

terrifying story of two Wisconsin preteens who lured their best friend into the woods and

stabbed her 19 times in June 2014. These girls responded that the "Slenderman"

internet meme was what influenced them to do it when asked why. The amount of time

spent on social media is directly correlated with aggression, but some internet usage

patterns have also been linked to aggression. Youths who committed serious crimes

were significantly more likely to have viewed violent online content, for instance.

Additionally, there is evidence that some mass killings may be influenced by other

violent acts that occurred recently. Given that the internet now provides unrestricted
access to images of real-life violence, such as murders and gang violence, this is

potential for copycat violence.

According to Elsaesser (2021), It can lead to a phenomenon known as "internet

banging," which is distinct from cyberbullying and involves taunts, disses, and

arguments on social media between members of competing crews, cliques, or gangs.

These interactions can involve remarks, pictures, and videos that result in physical

violent confrontations, shootings, and, in the worst scenarios, deaths. This dynamic can

be deadly for young people who live in urban areas with low levels of political

engagement and easy access to firearms.

Elsaesser (2021), The study with teenagers found that comments were the

feature that was most frequently connected to social media conflicts. About 80% of the

incidents they described involved comments, which let social media users publicly react

to other people's content that they've posted. The users explained how outsiders can

"hype up" online conflicts by leaving comments: "On Facebook, if one group argues, it

would be mostly the outsiders that'll be hypin' them up... 'Cause the argument could

have been done, but you got outsiders being like, 'Oh, she going to beat you up.'" This

makes the argument worse.

According to Phippen (2017), In Chicago, two men and two women were

detained and charged on Thursday with kidnapping and torturing a man by slicing a

piece of his hair down to his scalp. Because the assault was broadcast live on

Facebook, many people saw it. Live Streaming develops conflicts in real time, and it

quickly draws a large audience. Elsaesser (2021), For instance, Facebook Live was
mentioned by almost a quarter of focus group participants as a feature that worsens the

conflict.

The four sections listed above are organized and divided the foreign literature

that has been presented: (1) How Social Media Turns Online Arguments Between

Teens Into Real-World Violence, (2) Social Media and Potential for Violence in

Adolescents, (3) Internet Banging, (4) Comments and Livestreams. The researchers

thought that by going deeper, we will further define the details and focus the topic,

which would help to support the study.

Violence is present in television, movies, video games, and the internet,

according to Vinney (2022). It's not surprising that psychologists, parents, and media

users in general are worried about its impact given that it's incorporated in explicitly

taught toward children, tweens, and teens as well. Psychologists have therefore looked

into the potential of a connection between the intake of violent media and rises in actual

aggressiveness ever since the invention of devices and consoles decades ago.

Foreign Studies

According to Elipe et al., (2015) , the ECIP-Q is a 22-item self-report survey

that examines recent cyberbullying. It covers issues such as insults directed at

the respondent, insulting comments made about the respondent by others, threats,

identity theft, unauthorized use of the respondent's identity, theft of private information,

public disclosure of information, embarrassing videos and images, photo manipulation,

social exclusion, and rumor-mongering.

While the causal link is not clear, some authors suggest that victims of bullies

who use the Internet to harass and mock may be more likely to develop low self-esteem

which, in turn, can have severe consequences for young people's well-being and

psychological adjustment (Palermiti et al., 2017), including increasing the risk of suicide.

Being a victim of cyberbullying has been linked to social, physical and

psychological problems (Tokunaga, 2010; Palermiti et al., 2017). Although a meta-

analytic study identified some key predictors of cyberbullying victimization by peers

(Chen et al., 2017), more research is needed into factors that mitigate the negative

consequences of cyberbullying victimization in adolescence.

Cyberbullying has a negative effect on adolescent development and is

typically associated with multiple psychological problems. Some researchers have

begun to study personal resources that facilitate coping with cyber aggression by peers

and are therefore protective (Chen et al., 2017). These personal resources might

ameliorate the potentially negative effects of cyberbullying and may include emotional

intelligence (EI).

Cyberbullying has been linked to social, physical and psychological problems

for adolescent victims. Victims of cyberbullying report more social and emotional

problems, such as isolation and emotion regulation problems, than victims of traditional

bullying Ak et al., 2015; Elipe et al., (2015). Research has also shown that cyberbullying

has negative consequences for both the physical health and psychological adjustment

of victims Tsaousis (2016).

Local literature

According to Tupas (2017) and Villamil et al. (2017) research, online harassment

is still occurring in this nation and has been rising since 2010. Cases of harassment

leading to suicidal behavior have occurred, like in the case of a student from Negros

Ocidental who took his own life. Because of his experience with cyberbullying

(Ellera,2017).

Researchers discovered that the utilization of cellphones increased the

probability of people being exposed to violence. The Philippine government has passed

R.A. 10627, the 2013 Anti-Bullying Act The anti-bullying legislation of the media

violence in all forms is prohibited in the Philippines, and schools are required to

implement anti-bullying measures (Republic Act No. 10627, 2013).

Social media has both positive and harmful effects on youth. One of the bad

consequences is harassment, which is fairly frequent these days on the internet. This is

quite frequent on social networking platforms. Online harassment is essentially an

electronic basis of communication to harm a person, most commonly through the

transmission of threatening messages. There are also violent films on social networking

platforms, which may influence the conduct of teenagers. They were more aggressive

after seeing violence, their conduct with their family changed, and their thinking more

forceful, which might eventually damage their life in society G. Carlyn, personal

communication (2017).

Our local literature gave our study more insights on how our group would

want our study to be conducted or known. The local literature of us, addresses and pin
pointed out one topic and one goal that helped us to make our objectives in our study

clearer and more highlighted. It still discussed and tackled the topic we wanted very

well, the literature also addressed the problems efficiently if youʼd notice.

The local literature captures the idea of our studyʼs problem and itʼs causes. Our local

literature highlights the aftermaths and the affects of our topic, which definitely

contributed a lot to consider our study to be relevant to todayʼs issues and concerns.

Local Studies

Jonathan E. Arendain and John Vianne B. Murcia, two student researchers of

the University of Mindanao (2016) conducted a study to determine what the effects of

social media violence in apps like Facebook could do to Filipino students who use it.

Their analysis revealed moderate Facebook users cannot be helped but to encounter

toxic and aggressive other Facebook users which deeply affect not only their life on the

social media app but also their lives outside their phone. The two researchers also said

that the more our technology advances and more students uses social media, the more

do the increase of the counts of the student victims of cybercrime of the said Facebook

app.

Quote, “In recent years, there has been increased societal attention focused on

the problem of aggressive behavior in learners.” Saying that even learners themselves

also harass other students. This only improves that social media violence is clearly an

issue that needs to be addressed and stopped. Ending their research statement with the

horrible effects of the social media violence on the victims. Said that student victims go
through deep depression, get social anxiety, lose their self- confidence and other more

mental illnesses. Some students’ victims also ruin their lives because of the social

media violence they’ve experienced like self-harm, not attending their school; which

clearly affects their academic performance, and committing suicide.

Just by analyzing this study by the two students of the University of Mindanao

we could really notice how deep and worse the social media violence in Facebook can

be. Which is the main reason why we also conduct our study. We would want people,

especially senior high students in the Talospatang National High School to be more

aware and more involved in issues like these since most of the senior high students in

the Talospatang National High School are Facebook users.

Meaning they could also encounter social media violence and be harassed by

their fellow students or the other way around, they could also be the ones who are

harassing other students online specifically on the Facebook app, social media violence

is a serious threat to senior high school students because when a student experience it

or encounters one he or she could deal with serious problems that will surely affect the

student’s life severely. Let us be more aware and open on topics and issues like these,

let us keep the social media apps especially the Facebook app to be safer for everyone

specifically to students.

Our local literature gave our study more insights on how our group does

would want our study to be conducted or known. The local literature of us, addresses

and pinpointed one topic and one goal that helped us to make our objectives in our

study clearer and more highlighted. It still discussed and tackled the topic we wanted

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study will employ a quantitative-descriptive survey research methodology to

evaluate and investigate the learner's lived experiences as well as the effects on their

mental health using social media.

Instrument Used

In collecting data, the researchers used a questionnaire in which respondents

pick their responses through the link of the Google form sent by the researchers via

Messenger. The questionnaire was divided into two parts: Part I covered the

respondents’ demographic information and Part II covered the factors that can affect the

mental health, behavior and academic performance of the respondents when exposed

to social media violence.

The researchers conducted a survey questionnaire instrument with quantitative-

descriptive research approach as an instrument for the study for Senior High Students

at Talospatang National High School to understand about the effects of social media

violence on their mental health, behavior and academic performance.

The researchers utilize a questionnaire, which was disseminated to respondents

after the Senior High School Adviser approved it. The questionnaire was then

circulated by the researchers.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers of this study used online survey questionnaire in collecting the

data. The questionnaire is composed of questions that researchers form from related

research and studies. The researchers make sure that the set of questions are enough

to provide sufficient data needed in the study. Also the questions were thoroughly

checked to make sure their effectiveness and modified to address all the corrections of

each question. An online questionnaire is preferred by the researchers than the

traditional hard-copy questionnaire because it is convenient and more accessible to

reach the respondents. Also, the data gathering was more efficient for the researchers

because of the technology advancements in collecting the data. The researchers

questions and created the survey, which were distributed. A hundred senior high

students at Talospatang National High School are randomly chosen and distributed,

ranging from the ages 16 to 19 years old.

In the survey, researchers make sure that the personal information and

identity of each respondent remain confidential to maintain the accuracy and non-bias of

the whole survey. Furthermore, in answering the online survey questionnaire, no

incentive was given to the respondents because this could change the way respondents

answer the survey that could affect the truthfulness of the whole study.

Description of the Respondents

The respondents of this study are the Senior High School Students at

Talospatang National High School which are Grade 11 and 12. The survey

questionnaire was constructed by the researchers using Google Forms, and a total of

one hundred twenty (120) participants completed it.

Sampling Technique

In this research study, random sampling was used. A hundred senior high

students in Talospatang National High School are randomly chosen and distributed.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The following statistical procedures are used to interpret the data gathered from

the respondents of the study:

1. Simple frequency counts. This facilitates the tallying and counting of frequencies

falling under each item or category.

2. Percentage. The percentage was used to compare the proportion of the frequencies

of the total number of responses. This was reinforced by ranking to donate the order of

the importance of an item in the questionnaire.

The formula is:

Where:

f = frequency of the observation of the study

N = total number of cases under study

P= percentage value

Data Analysis Procedure

The researchers used quantitative analysis. This includes statistics to be computed

and descriptions of the statistical methods used for testing the null hypothesis.

Recommendations

The recommendations listed below are based on the results of this study:

1. Talospatang National High School must create a social campaign strategy

with a lot of options in hand to establish and inaugurate rules and regulations for youths

to assist and be knowledgeable in handling and using their social media accounts.

2. The researchers recommend to an administrator or someone who’s in a

higher position to approve in producing and developing a mandatory survey and

consultation to the learners who experienced being violated on social media concerning

their health, behavior and stability.

3. In accordance with the recommendation above, the guidance counselors and

teachers must aid the learners especially the victims and if it ever happens that the one

who caused them violence online are from school, based on the survey that the school

will be disseminating for a disciplinary action must be served.

4. The researchers want to discuss forming a club that can support and inform

the youth regarding their health, behaviors, and responsibilities. This can help in

lessening the violence and keeping the learners accountable for their own made

choices, decisions and such, so as in maintaining a good, healthy environment for

everyone.
