Unplugged
1 “Glenda and Cindy, my computer will not accompany
me on this trip,” Dad announced to us over dessert. “I have
it all taken care of so that I don’t have to toil at all, and
this excursion will be strictly for family pleasure.”
2 “Yay!” Glenda and I cheered. We were departing in
the morning to go to South Padre Island. We were very
excited because there is nothing we like more than the
beach.
3 Glenda and I are twins. We look exactly alike, but
inside we are dissimilar and don’t see eye-to-eye on
much. Glenda is fascinated by science, and I like reading
novels. She digs in the dirt to uncover bugs and worms,
while I like to turn cartwheels and stand on my head in
the grass. She loves video games, and I love music. We
both, however, love the beach.
4 That night I could tell that Glenda couldn’t sleep either,
because she kept turning over and sighing. We were both
too excited from seeing our suitcases packed and standing
in our room, waiting for morning. I thought I would never
get to sleep, but I guess I must have finally drifted off
because the next thing I knew, Dad was waking us and '/ /.

5 As soon as we sat down, Glenda’s electronic game

emerged, and I snatched my headphones from my satchel.
Dad gave us a stern look and held out a hand. “Give me
all of your electronics,” he said. “We are going to have
family conversations in the car, and we are not going to
be plugged in—none of us.”
6 I looked at Mom for help, but she just smirked, and
I knew that they were in this together. Glenda and I
grumbled as we gave Dad our electronics. Now we had
a five-hour voyage with nothing to do. This trip was
starting to sound really terrible.
7 Dad resumed driving, and Glenda and I situated ourselves
in the back seat feeling miserable. He was ruining our
journey. What was so dreadful about electronics anyway?
8 “Let’s play ‘Geography,’ ” hollered Dad excitedly. None of
us wanted to play except Mom, so we just listened to them
play for a while. It sounded incredibly boring. Dad came
up with the name of a place—Maine. Then Mom had to
declare the name of a place that began with the last letter
of Dad’s place, and she blurted out “England.” Then it
was Dad’s turn. He quickly replied, “Denmark.” It was
Mom’s turn, and since she had used Kansas already, she
was stumped. Glenda and I traded confused looks, both
wondering, “How could she be stuck?” Then it seemed to
hit us in unison. “Kentucky!” we both shouted together.
9 “Oh, are you girls participating now?” Dad asked.
10 “No,” said Glenda as she folded her arms moodily. '/ /.

11 “I guess,” I offered. Soon Glenda joined in too, and we

were all laughing and joking together, and I decided that
it wasn’t so bad.
12 Before we knew it, it was time for lunch. We stopped
and had burgers—a tofu burger for me and beef for
Glenda. Then, we piled back into the car.
13 “Let’s play ‘Name that Tune,’” Glenda said. In that
game we each hum a few notes of a song, and the first
person to guess what song it is gets to go next. It is one
of my favorite games.
14 Finally, we were tired of playing that game. I looked at
my watch and yawned. “How much farther?” I asked.
15 Dad astonished me with his reply. “About an hour,” he
said.
16 “Wow! That went quickly!” I exclaimed
17 As soon as we arrived, Glenda and I yanked our
swimsuits out of our suitcases and headed for the beach.
While I turned cartwheels, Glenda explored the shore
for sea creatures. While I read under the umbrella, she
collected ocean water and tried to figure out how to
separate the water and the salt. Finally, Dad and Mom
were ready to go in the water, and we all jumped in
together and rode the waves. It was great fun.
18 Oh, and don’t tell Dad this, but that night before we
went to sleep, Glenda and I agreed that we didn’t miss
our electronics at all. '/ /.
