Social Connect and Responsibility – (BSCK307)

Introduction
➢ Plantation Day is an event held on college campuses under the subject social connect
and responsibility to promote environmental awareness and encourage people to plant
trees. On March 08, 2023 our college organized a Plantation Day event on campus to
contribute to the global effort of combating climate change and promoting
sustainability.

➢ All participants were divided into groups and were assigned specific areas on the
campus for planting trees. Each group was provided with saplings of different species,
including fruit-bearing and medicinal trees, as well as tools like shovels and gloves for
planting.

➢ The atmosphere was energetic, with students and staff alike participating in the
event with enthusiasm. They dug holes, planted trees, and watered them with care.

1.1 Plant Origin

Plants are predominantly photosynthetic eukaryotes of the kingdom Plantae. There are about
320,000 known species of plants, of which the great majority, some 260,000–290,000, produce
seeds. Green plants provide a substantial proportion of the world's molecular oxygen, and are the
basis of most of Earth's ecosystems..

➢ Custard apple, also known as sugar apple, is a tropical fruit with a unique flavor and texture.
The origin of custard apple can be traced back to the West Indies, where it is believed to have
originated more than 2,000 years ago. The fruit was then introduced to other parts of the world
by early Spanish and Portuguese explorers.

➢ Custard apple is grown extensively in tropical and subtropical regions, including South and
Central America, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. The fruit thrives in warm and humid
climates, with well-drained soils and plenty of sunshine.

➢ The custard apple tree is a small to medium-sized tree that can grow up to 10 meters in
height. It has a dense canopy of broad leaves that provide shade for the fruit. The fruit itself is

greenish-yellow in color and has a bumpy, irregular surface. When ripe, it has a creamy, custard-
like texture, with a sweet and tangy flavor.

➢ Custard apple is a rich source of nutrients, including vitamin C, potassium, and dietary fiber.
It is used in a variety of culinary applications, including desserts, smoothies, and ice cream. In
traditional medicine, custard apple is used to treat a range of ailments, including fever, diarrhea,
and dysentery

1.3 Usage of Plant

Plants play a very important role in our lives. They make up a large part of our diet, as well as
being used to make medicines, soaps, furniture, textiles, tyres and much more. Although we now
live in a highly industrialised society, we have not lost this dependence on plants. We need to be
aware of the part that plants play in our lives and we must ensure that we care for them to
continue this long relationship.

● Air Purifying Properties: The plant is known best to help purify the air inside your
home and give you a fresh feeling all day long . This helps clear your indoor air of pollution and
toxins , making it much secure and cleaner for us to breath .

● Increases Oxygen: The natural process of photosynthesis detects that plants absorb
carbon dioxide and breath out oxygen during the day . So , naturally all living houseplants
replenish the oxygen in indoor air .

● Improves Indoor Humidity: These plants do not need a lot water ,water might even
harm them .So to prevent themselves from being exposed to too much moisture , areca palms
tend to release moisture through their palm fronds .

Custard apple is a delicious and nutritious fruit that can be used in a variety of ways in daily life.
Here are some common ways in which custard apple is used:

➢ Eating raw: Custard apple can be eaten raw by cutting the fruit in half and scooping out the
flesh with a spoon. The creamy, custard-like texture and sweet flavor make it a delicious snack.

1.6 Conclusion

Overall, the Plantation Day event was a huge success, and it provided an excellent opportunity
for everyone on campus to contribute to the preservation of the environment. By planting trees,
we were able to reduce our carbon footprint, improve the air quality on campus, and promote
sustainability. This can also promote practical learning and instill a sense of responsibility in
students towards the environment.

Plantation drives can also enhance the aesthetic appeal of college campuses. It can make the
college campus greener and more attractive, which can create a positive and welcoming
environment for students, faculty, and visitors.

Overall, organizing a plantation day in colleges can have numerous benefits, ranging from
environmental awareness to community building and beautification of the campus.

We hope to continue such events in the future and encourage more people to take up the cause of
environmental conservation.
