Abstract -

Gems and colors hold significant importance in human life, both culturally and
psychologically. Across civilizations, gems have been revered for their beauty, rarity, and
perceived mystical properties. They are often associated with wealth, status, and spiritual
significance. For example, diamonds symbolize purity and strength, while rubies represent
passion and vitality. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, gems are believed to possess healing
properties in various alternative medicine practices like crystal therapy. Different gems are
thought to have unique energies that can influence emotions, health, and spiritual well-being.
Colors, likewise, play a crucial role in human psychology and culture. They have the power to
evoke emotions, convey messages, and influence behavior. For instance, red is commonly
associated with passion, energy, and danger, while blue evokes feelings of calmness and trust.
In branding and marketing, colors are strategically chosen to elicit specific consumer
responses. Additionally, colors have cultural significance, with different societies attributing
varied meanings to them. For example, white symbolizes purity in Western cultures but
represents mourning in some Asian cultures. Furthermore, colors are integral to various fields
such as art, design, and therapy. Artists use color theory to evoke moods and create visual
impact, while designers utilize color psychology to enhance user experience and
communication. In therapy, color therapy is employed to promote healing and balance energies.

Introduction –

Colour psychology is the study of how different colours affect human mood and
behaviour. It explores how colours can influence emotional responses, as well as how responses
to colour are affected by factors such as age and cultural background.

Different topics that are of interest in this area include:

• The meanings of colours

• How colours impact physiological responses
• Emotional reactions to colour
• Factors that impact colour preferences
• Cultural differences in the meanings and associations of different colours
• Whether colours can impact mental health
• How colours can influence behaviours
• Ways that colours can be utilized to promote well-being
• How colours can be used to improve safety and design more optimal home and work
environments

Gems are used extensively in Ayurvedic medicines. Gems are called Ratna. The term
Ratna is Coined due to their unique, radiant and appealing outlook when compared to other
natural Minerals. There are nine Ratnas and eight uparatnas (sub-gems) mentioned in
Ayurvedic Treatise.

1
Ratnas or Gems are the precious stones which symbolize wealth and power. Gems are
Commonly used in the preparation of jewels. But in Rasashastra gems are being used for
Medicinal purposes after proper purification properties.

Colour therapy (also called chromotherapy) is an age-old healing modality used by

many Vedic sciences including Yoga, Jyotish (Vedic Astrology), Vastu, and of course,
Ayurveda. Not surprisingly, colour therapy also has roots in other ancient traditions including
Egypt, Greece, and China. Although the specifics of each tradition may vary slightly, one
common belief they all hold is the healing potential that is available through colours.
In Ayurvedic Medicine, colour therapy (Ranga Chikitsa) falls under Tanmatra
Chikitsa or “Five Sense Therapy”. Tanmatra Chikitsa consists of subtle therapies used to
target the five senses (i.e. vision, touch, taste, audio, smell) in order to heal the body, nervous
system, and spirit. Therefore, colour therapy uses Rupa, the sense of sight, as a gateway for
healing.
Being subtle by nature, colour therapy can offer profound healing of the subtle body
making it very effective in treating trauma, PTSD, emotional imbalances, mood disorders,
karmic disorders, and nervous system conditions. However, it can be very useful in physical
healing as well and colour therapy is often used to treat conditions such as pain, inflammation,
arthritis, thyroid disorders, digestive issues, and even sexual debility.

The seven chakra & their respective colours -

Each colour corresponds to a specific chakra and can be used to strengthen the respective
chakra energy as well as remove blockages. This therapy can be done by meditating on the
area of the chakra while visualizing its correlating colour. For example, you can strengthen or
unblock your root chakra (Muladara) energy by bringing your focus to the perineum and
visualizing red vibrating throughout this area.
You can alternatively hold the appropriate coloured light to the area of the chakra that needs
healing (and there may be multiple), or place the correlating gemstone directly on the
chakra. This can be very powerful, however, so go slow and only do 5 to 10 minutes per
chakra to begin. For either of these therapies, it is best to be lying down in a dark room. For
colour therapy using light, it is best for a knowledgeable friend or practitioner to apply the light
to allow more relaxation for you.

1. Colour Psychology:
Colour is a powerful communication tool and can be used to signal action, influence mood, and
even influence physiological reactions. Certain colours have been associated with
physiological changes, including increased blood pressure, increased metabolism, and
eyestrain.

2
The Psychological Effects of Colour -

Colours in the red area of the colour spectrum are known as warm colours and include red,
orange, and yellow. These warm colours evoke emotions ranging from feelings of warmth and
comfort to feelings of anger and hostility.

Colours on the blue side of the spectrum are known as cool colours and include blue, purple,
and green. These colours are often described as calm, but can also call to mind feelings of
sadness or indifference.

Symbolic meanings that are often associated with different colours:

• Red: Passion, excitement, love

• Pink: Soft, reserved, earthy

• Purple: Mysterious, noble, glamorous

• Blue: Wisdom, hope, reason, peace

• Green: Nature, growth, freshness

• Yellow: Hope, joy, danger

• Orange: Warmth, kindness, joy

• White: Truth, indifference

Colour Psychology as Therapy

Several ancient cultures, including the Egyptians and Chinese, practiced chromotherapy, or the
use of colours to heal. Chromotherapy is sometimes referred to as light therapy or colourology.

Colourology is still used today as a holistic or alternative treatment. In this treatment:

• Red is used to stimulate the body and mind and to increase circulation.
• Yellow is thought to stimulate the nerves and purify the body.
• Orange is used to heal the lungs and to increase energy levels.
• Blue is believed to soothe illnesses and treat pain.
• Indigo shades are thought to alleviate skin problems.

While more research is needed, a 2020 study suggested that chromotherapy may be an effective
way to help combat feelings of compassion fatigue and post-traumatic stress in intensive care
unit nurses.

3
Modern Research on Colour Psychology

Most psychologists view colour therapy with skepticism and point out that the supposed effects
of colour are often grossly exaggerated. Colours also have different meanings in different
cultures.

However, existing research has found that colour can impact people in a variety of surprising
ways:

• While coloured pills are associated with greater pain relief., while red pills are
associated with having greater stimulant properties.
• Red causes people to react with greater speed and force, something that might be
helpful during athletic activities according to researchers.
• Black uniformed players are more likely to receive penalties in competitive sporting
events.

Colour Can Influence Performance

Studies have also shown that certain colours can have an impact on performance. No one likes
to see a graded test covered in red ink, but one study found that seeing the colour red before
taking an exam actually hurt test performance.

While the colour red is often described as threatening, arousing or exciting, many previous
studies on the impact of the colour red have been largely inconclusive. The study found,
however, that exposing students to the colour red prior to an exam has been shown to have a
negative impact on test performance.

In the first of the six experiments described in the study, 71 U.S. colleges students were
presented with a participant number coloured either red, green or black prior to taking a five-
minute test.

Colour and Consumer Purchases

Colour psychology suggests that various shades can have various effects, from boosting our
moods to causing anxiety. But could the colour of the products you purchase ever say
something about your personality? For example, could the colour of the car you buy somehow
relate to some underlying personality traits or quirks?

When buying items, your colour preferences might say something about the image you are
trying to project. Colour preferences, from the clothes you wear to the car you drive, can

4
sometimes make a statement about how we want other people to perceive us. Other factors,
such as age and gender, can also influence our colour choices.

• White: As many of our readers have suggested, the colour white can feel fresh and clean.
The colour is often used to evoke a sense of youth and modernity.
• Black: Our readers often describe black as a "powerful" colour, which might be the
reason why black is the most popular colour for luxury vehicles. People often describe the
colour as sexy, powerful, and mysterious.
• Silver: It's the third most popular vehicle colour and is linked to a sense of innovation and
modernity. High-tech products are often silver, so the colour is often seen as new, modern,
and cutting-edge.
• Red: Red is a bold, attention-getting colour, so preferring this type of car might mean you
want to project an image of power, action, and confidence.
• Blue: People often describe blue as the colour of stability and safety. Driving a blue car or
SUV might indicate that you are dependable and trustworthy.
• Yellow: According to the experts, driving a yellow vehicle might mean you are a happy
person in general and perhaps a bit more willing than the average person to take risks.
• Gray: The experts suggest that people who drive gray cars don't want to stand out and
instead prefer something more subtle.

Gems in Astrology

In Astrology, it is believed that a

person’s health and well-being is
determined by the Grahas. The effect
of respective gems to specific Grahas
is already explained in the table above.
Every cell in the human body is
ultimately made up of electrons and
nucleus. Just like the electrons orbit
round the nucleus, so do the planets
revolve around the Sun. Considering
‘Loka Purusha Samya’ concept here, it
can be inferred that planets can have a
major effect on Homo sapiens at
quantum level.

These gems can draw energy from

their particular Graha and channelize
them into the wearer’s body. Thus they
correct the deficit aura and help to
subside the disease.

If this method of Dharana (Wearing)

of Ratnas can be such a boon to cure
diseases, it has another facet of
mitigating and rejuvenating the body
through internal administration as
well. This has been mentioned in Rasa
shastra texts.

Gems as per modern – A person's birth chart indicates each planet's position,
which gives an idea of the impact intensity. This birth chart is based on the time's planetary
positions in the sky. According to Vedic astrologers, these positions are determined by the
person’s past actions and can be readjusted through yoga, wearing different types of gems,
rituals, or meditation.

Zodiac gems have grown in popularity in recent times with the penetration of digital media
and knowledge on the topic.

There are nine planets per Vedic Astrology, and each one has an associated astrology stone
that can alter its energy impact and act as a catalyst to improve a person’s fortune. Sages like
Acharya Varahamihir have extensively believed in gem astrology, and their scriptures are
reviewed today to find the origins of zodiac gems known to possess divine powers.

According to our ancient scriptures, the navratnas, as we popularly know them and as visible
in the table below, are the most important but not the only gemstones. These absorb particular
planetary energy and enhance its aura and effect on a person’s life.

Benefits of wearing gemstones

Many people assert that a few simple gemstones have improved their lives, even though
some of you might not believe in the power of horoscope gems. These gems help us in
multiple areas in our lives, as the following:

Healing: Lots of zodiac sign gems are known for their healing properties like aquamarine,
granite, etc. These gemstones make you strong by surrounding you with positivity.

Connection: Gemstones help you gain clarity by improving your connection with your soul
and inner consciousness. Wearing these gems will help you think clearly and realize more
about your actions.

Sustainability: Gemstone jewelry lasts a lifetime and is forever. It can be worn on a daily
basis and just for special occasions as well. A lot of people get ornaments made with
astrology stones and wear them at formal functions as well.

Precise purpose: One of the main reasons to wear a gemstone in everyday life is for a
particular purpose. It is different for everybody, and helps people achieve that purpose.

Soothing energy: All of us want to lead a positive and healthy life, gemstones definitely
help with that. These gems help us get rid of all the negativity and make us feel the soothing
energy around us like sandalwood stone is used for helping with anxiety and stress.

3. Ranga Chikitsa : Ayurvedic Colour Therapy

NOTE: Gray and any pale colour are provoking to Kapha but will generally pacify Vata and
Pitta.

Onet aspects of Ayurveda is its long list of tools available to heal the body and mind. Although
diet and herbs are essential factors in any healing protocol, there are many other therapies that
can be used to bring balance. Of these, Ranga Chikitsa, or colour therapy is one of my
favorites as it is affordable, accessible, easy to incorporate, and effective… and the best part is,
it can be a lot of fun!

Colours are formed by the reflection of light rays (radiant energy) that vibrate at certain
frequencies. Each colour appears different due to the different speeds of their vibration. The

18
speeds are measured in nanometers (nm) or wavelengths and are as follows (numbers are
averaged):
▪ RED: 700 nm
▪ ORANGE: 650 nm
▪ YELLOW: 600 nm
▪ GREEN: 550 nm
▪ BLUE: 500 nm
▪ INDIGO: 450 nm
▪ VIOLET: 400 nm
In general, the first three colours are more stimulating and penetrating (with red being the most)
and the latter four are considered more grounding and spiritual. The spectrums of red, orange,
and yellow contain more infrared lightwaves and correlate with the rising sunlight, and green
to violet slowly becomes more ultraviolet by nature correlating with the mid to late-day
sun. These lightwaves penetrate the body at their own respective frequency and yield into our
Pranic energy to create change.

How to Incorporate Colour Therapy –

1. Colour visualization meditation: Meditate on a colour and imagine it either radiating
around you or on the colour’s related chakra. For example, visualize the green colour at the
heart center to enhance love and compassion and remove blocked emotions.

2. Solarized water: Take a clear glass jar of water and wrap it in coloured tissue paper or saran
wrap. Let this water sit in the sun for at least 2 to 3 hours then drink it to invoke that colour’s

21
healing power. To give an example, you can wrap a jar of water in blue tissue paper and set it
in the sun; drink this water to reduce anxiety and create calmness—you can even (secretly)
share some with your little ones when they seem overstimulated.

3. Colour through clothing: Synchronize your clothing to enhance planetary energy on their
respective day of the week. For example, you can wear purple on Fridays to enhance beauty,
grace, and feminine energy. Alternatively, you can wear clothing of a certain colour anytime
you want to invoke its energy. For instance, if you are feeling depressed, tired, and
unmotivated, you can wear yellow to promote energy and happiness. And please note that this
can be used in the opposite connotation as well. By this I mean, that if you are feeling angry
and irritated, avoid wearing red and orange as this will quite likely enhance these Pitta
emotions.

4. Colour through environment: This includes the colours of your walls, ceilings, and home
lighting. This is especially important for areas you spend a lot of time in such as your office
and bedroom. It is best to have your ceilings white or off-white and your floors a more earthy
colour. If you have coloured lights in your rooms make sure they are suitable for your needs
(same for your children)!

5. Coloured glasses or goggles: Believe it or not, you can even wear coloured sunglasses or
goggles to utilize colour therapy. For example, you can wear blue-tinted sunglasses to calm
anxiety and soothe the nervous system. I found an example here on Amazon (this is an
affiliated link), although I have not tried this product personally.

6. Gemstones: Gemstones possess a wealth of healing properties all their own, but the colour
of each gem will also hold influence. This is a fun option that you can either wear as jewelry,
keep around your home or work area, or use as a chakra therapy as described above. For
example, you can keep a jade stone or crystal at your desk to enhance relaxation and reduce
stress while you work.

7. Colour through food: This option is quite simple and accessible for most individuals. For
this, you can either match your food to the planetary energy and its ruling day to strengthen its
energy (e.g. eat kale on Wednesdays to strengthen Mercury and enhance communication,
intellect, memory, and learning) or you can regularly eat the colour of the food that you need
most in your life (e.g. eat white foods for invoking balanced, sattvic energy). Be careful with
this one however, the most important food choices will still relate to your
personal dosha and digestion needs so only favor coloured foods that are suitable for YOU!

8. Colour chakra therapy: Chakra healing therapy can be administered locally by a holistic
practitioner or a loving friend; for this, you can use a movable chromotherapy light and place
it just above the area of the related chakra while lying down in a dark room, hold for 5 to 30
minutes per chakra. An example would be to place a yellow light directly over the navel to
improve digestion and eliminate parasites. If this option is not available, you can simply use

22
the appropriate gemstone for that chakra and place it directly on the area of the chakra. For
instance, you can place a blue sapphire over the throat to improve clear communication.

Discussion -

Gems and colors hold profound significance in human life, transcending mere aesthetics to
influence emotions, cultures, and beliefs. Gems, with their rarity and inherent beauty, have
symbolized wealth, status, and spirituality throughout history. From the ancient civilizations
of Egypt and Mesopotamia to modern times, gems like diamonds, rubies, and emeralds have
adorned royalty and been treasured as symbols of power and prosperity. Beyond their material
value, gems are believed to possess metaphysical properties, with each stone thought to carry
unique energies that can affect emotions and well-being.

Similarly, colors play a crucial role in human perception and psychology, influencing mood,
behavior, and even decision-making. Different cultures associate colors with varied meanings;
for instance, red symbolizes passion and vitality in Western cultures but signifies luck and
prosperity in Chinese tradition. Color psychology suggests that colors can evoke specific
emotional responses; blue induces calmness and tranquility, while yellow inspires warmth and
optimism.

The combination of gems and colors intertwines in various cultural practices and beliefs. Many
believe that wearing specific gemstones corresponding to one's birth month can bring luck and
protection, while others use color therapy, utilizing hues to promote healing and balance in
mind, body, and spirit.

In essence, gems and colors serve as tangible manifestations of human experiences, reflecting
our desires, beliefs, and aspirations. Whether adorning oneself with jewels or surrounding
oneself with vibrant hues, the presence of gems and colors enriches life, offering beauty,
meaning, and a connection to the profound mysteries of existence.

Conclusion –

Colours are not merely hues that adorn our lives; they possess the power to shape our energies
and experiences. Indian astrology’s ancient wisdom reveals the profound significance of
wearing specific colours on each day of the week, attracting positivity and prosperity. From
serene whites to enigmatic blacks, each colour resonates with unique qualities, empowering us
to navigate life’s journey with grace and strength.

In conclusion, all of the chakras in your body must work in concert with one another in order
for you to live your life to the fullest. If one of them is out of balance, it can throw the others
off balance as well. Learning to associate the colours with their respective chakras can help
you better perform visualization techniques that can help you keep everything working well
together. In addition, you might choose to focus your wardrobe on a specific chakra colour if
you notice that you’re having an off day. You can even use these techniques to decorate a room
or your entire house. By associating colours with your chakras, you can learn to become more
balanced and enjoy a happier and healthier life.

25
In conclusion, yes gemstones do work, provided you wear the correct one and too correctly.
Gemstones have done wonders for people who could not even see the light at the end of the
tunnel. It is important to know gemstones are not magic, they will not make your problems go
away but they help you realize you are the solution and you are capable. Gemstones bring you
positivity, they help you feel better and cleanse your energies as well. Gemstone jewelry can
be made and worn on a daily basis as well.
