1. Application Description
The sample probe prototype is designed to automate the process of drawing and
dispensing liquids into and from a cuvette, a small tube-like container used for
spectrophotometric measurements. This prototype finds applications in laboratories
where precise and repeatable liquid handling is crucial, such as in biochemical
assays, pharmaceutical testing, and environmental monitoring. By automating this
process, the prototype aims to reduce human error, enhance precision, and increase
efficiency in liquid handling tasks.
2. Theory of Operation
The operation of the sample probe prototype is based on the integration of servo
motors and a syringe mechanism. Here's a detailed breakdown of the process:
1. Servo Motors and Joints System: The device uses servo motors to
drive a joint system. These motors are controlled by a microcontroller that
precisely regulates their movements based on pre-programmed instructions.

2. Syringe Mechanism: The syringe acts as the liquid handling component.

One servo motor is responsible for the vertical movement, positioning the
syringe above the cuvette. Another servo motor controls the plunger of the
syringe, drawing liquid in or expelling it as required.

3. Wooden Body Construction: The main structure of the prototype is

constructed from wood, chosen for its ease of manipulation and cost-
effectiveness for prototyping purposes. The components are bound together
using a suitable binding material, ensuring stability and rigidity.

4. Control System: The microcontroller serves as the brain of the device,

receiving input commands (potentially from a user interface or computer
program) and converting these into precise movements of the servo motors.

5. Operation Cycle:
 The device positions the syringe over the source liquid container.
 The servo motor controlling the plunger draws the required amount of
liquid into the syringe.
 The device moves the syringe to the cuvette.
 The plunger servo motor expels the liquid into the cuvette.
 The device can then either repeat the process or perform additional
tasks as programmed.
3. Comparison between the Prototype and
the Main Device
The prototype differs from a fully developed main device in several key aspects:

1. Material: The prototype uses wood for its construction, while a main
device would likely use more durable and chemically resistant materials
such as stainless steel or high-grade plastics.

2. Precision: The prototype may exhibit lower precision due to the

limitations of wood construction and basic servo motors. The main device
would use high-precision motors and possibly more advanced sensors to
ensure exact measurements.

3. Automation and Integration: The main device would have more

sophisticated automation capabilities, including advanced software
integration, better user interfaces, and possibly connectivity with laboratory
information management systems (LIMS).

4. Durability and Reliability: Prototypes are often not as robust as main

devices. The main device would be designed to withstand regular use over a
long period, with higher resistance to wear and tear.
4. Errors and Troubleshooting of the
Main Device
1. Software Glitches and Errors:

 Error: The device does not execute commands as programmed or

experiences software crashes.

 Troubleshooting:
 Code Review: Examine the software code for logical errors, bugs, or
issues with command sequences. Simplify the code where possible to
isolate problems.
 Error Logs: Use logging features to track and record software
operations. Analyze these logs to identify and address the root causes of
glitches.
 Redundancy Checks: Implement software redundancy and error-
checking protocols to catch and correct errors during operation.

2. Liquid Spillage or Contamination:

 Error: Liquid spills during transfer, leading to contamination or inaccurate

results.

 Troubleshooting:
 Sealing: Ensure all connections between the syringe, tubing, and
cuvette are properly sealed. Replace any faulty seals or gaskets.
 Alignment: Verify that the syringe is correctly aligned over the cuvette
to prevent spills. Use alignment guides or automated positioning
systems if necessary.
3. Temperature and Environmental Control:

 Error: Environmental factors such as temperature fluctuations affect device

performance.

 Troubleshooting:
 Environmental Control: Use temperature control systems to maintain a
stable operating environment for the device.
 Component Specifications: Ensure all components are rated for the
expected range of environmental conditions.
 Monitoring: Continuously monitor environmental parameters and adjust
operations as needed to maintain optimal conditions.
