Experiment 09: Analyze the Static and Dynamic Balancing

Objectives: The concept of balance plays a huge role in machinery used in different fields. Without
sense of balance in objects, they are subjective to toppling and vibration which consequently leads to a
significant wear and tear in machinery and hence shrunken thrival of machines. Hence, before
producing them on commercial scale and use in industry, they are subjective to rigorous testing to
make sure they are both statically and dynamically balanced. This means that the center of mass should
be made the best heaviest to resist the effect of vibrations.

Apparatus:

Norwood Instruments Static and Dynamic Balancing Machine (8)

For the very experiment, Norwood Instruments 8 Static and Dynamic Balancing Machine shall be used which
consists on a shaft rotated by means of an electric motor attached. On the shaft, rest four masses, each of mass
1kg. The shaft has a circular scale and pointer, also a linear scale is fitted to the chassis below the shaft.

Procedure:

Analysis of Static Balancing

In analysis of static condition of system of masses, the four masses should be oriented perfectly at 0ͦ
and 180ͦ respectively. The object 1 and 4 are oriented at 180ͦ and the object 2 and 3 are oriented at 0ͦ. It
must be ensured that the four masses are equidistant from each other, for the case of ours, we
considered an equal distance of 5cm between the two. The spindle is manually rotated and it achieves
some torque. In order for static balancing to take part, the spindle should not rotate in anticlockwise
direction or considering the wear and tear conditions, it should not make a dominant rotation. If
following conditions are abided successfully, the body is statically balanced.
𝑛

∑ 𝑚𝑖 𝑟𝑖 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃𝑖 = 0
𝑖=1

∑ 𝑚𝑖 𝑟𝑖 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃𝑖 = 0
𝑖=1

If the spindle moves dominantly in anticlockwise direction, use a Hex-Key to loosen the bolt for the
mass and check whether its orientation is perfect it is equidistant from the other.

Once manually tested, attach the spindle to the motor by the means of belt now rotate the spindle at
low rpms significantly improved by means of control knob. The state should persist on.

Analysis of Dynamic Balancing

In order to analyze the dynamic balancing of masses, likewise the static balancing the manual test is
not carried out, rather only the machine test. Dislodge one of masses (preferably the mass 2 and 3 from
the static condition and randomly adjust it on the spindle). Now ensure that the machine is properly
covered and turn the motor on to rotate at significantly low rpms. In such an instant, dominant
vibration shall be felt on the surface where the apparatus is resting. The adjustments are carried out on
other masses until the spindle rotates smoothly and no dominant shaking is observed.

Results and Discussion:

By results of both static and dynamic balancing we can again say that balancing of a machine is
extremely important in industry as well as household. Without good balancing, there is an occurrence
of rigorous vibrations which lead to wear and tear and hence decreased efficiency and decreased extent
of use. Hence rigorous testing must be carried out before introducing to use.

Conclusion:

• A body is said to be balanced when it rests on the center of gravity.

• A body is said to be kinetically balanced when the mass is not resting about the center of
gravity or the mass is disturbed.
Assumption
For the above mentioned discrete sums of mass and radii with respect to components of
angle, the mass and radius are considered with unitary values (Mass is 1kg and radius is
1cm)
