3A Teacher’s notes Shopping lists
Activity: Pelmanism
(remember and match pairs of cards)
Language point: Determiners and vocabulary for
containers and their contents (Unit 3, Sections B and D)
Time: 15 minutes
Materials: one set of cards for each group of students,
cut along the lines (There are two different sets of cards
for the teacher to choose from.)
NOTE: for this activity, it is best to photocopy the cards
onto thick paper or card, so that students can’t see the
words through the paper when they are turned face
down on the table.
Procedure:
• Divide the class into small groups. Number the
students 1, 2, 3, etc.
• Tell the students that they are going to play a game
where they need to match pairs of cards.
• For Set A (containers), explain that they need to
match one container with its contents.
• For Set B (determiners), explain that they need to
match one food word with a correct determiner.
• Tell the students to mix up the Set A cards and put
them face down on the table. Tell Student 1 to turn
over two cards and read them out. If they match and
make a correct phrase (e.g. ‘a bottle of’ and ‘water’),
the student keeps the cards. If they don’t match, the
student turns them back over again, keeping them in
the same place. Then Student 2 turns over two cards,
and so on. The game ends when there are no cards
left on the table. The winner is the student with the
most cards.
• Practice the activity with one group to show the class
how it works.
• Give a time limit, if necessary.
• Repeat with the Set B cards.
• While the students are doing the activity, walk around
and listen for any problems with grammar, vocabulary
or pronunciation. Make a note of these and give
feedback to the class after they have finished the
activity.
