PRESS RELEASE ON CONSUMER PRICE INDEX (CPI) INFLATION
FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY, 2024

Inflation Rate, February, 2024 over February, 2023 (Year on Year) 23.06
Average Inflation Rate, Jul-Feb, 2023-24 over Jul-Feb, 2022-23 27.96
Analysis of Consumer Price Index (CPI) Base Year (2015-16)
1. The CPI on new base (2015-16) comprises of urban CPI and Rural CPI. The Urban CPI
covers 35 cities and 356 consumer items. The Rural CPI covers 27 Rural Centers and 244 consumer
items. In the base year (2015-16) National CPI for 12 major groups is also computed by taking
weighted average of Urban CPI and Rural CPI.
Monthly Analysis [February, 2024 over January, 2024]
2. CPI National for the month of February, 2024 increased by 0.03% over January, 2023. The
Urban CPI recorded an increase of 0.24% while Rural CPI recorded a decrease of 0.25%.

Increased:: Fresh Fruits (6.87%), Honey (3.18%), Fish (3.14%), Besan (2.47%), Pulse Moong (2.16%), Pulse
Gram (1.48%), Meat (1.23%), Gram Whole (1.15%), Condiments and Spices (1.06%), Beverages (0.75%), Dry
Fruits (0.60%), Pan Prepared (0.46%), Beans (0.45%), Rice (0.45%) and Pulse Mash (0.34%).

Decreased: Eggs (32.27%), Tomatoes (25.02%), Onions (7.98%), Tea (7.87%), Potatoes (5.63%) and
Cooking Oil (0.99%).

NON-FOOD:
Increased: Gas Charges (10.04%), Motor Fuel (3.53%), Furniture and Furnishing (1.78%),
Appliances/Articles/Products for Personal Care (1.06%), Household Servant (1.03%), Electricity Charges
(0.90%), Cleaning and Laundring (0.83%), Personal Grooming Services (0.80%), Solid Fuel (0.79%) and
Transport Services (0.68%).

Decreased: Liquified Hydrocarbons (1.69%) and Stationery (0.11%).

FOOD
Increased: Pulse Moong (4.51%), Fresh Fruits (3.73%), Butter (3.67%), Chicken (3.33%), Fish (3.11%), Besan
(3.05%), Honey (1.91%), Gram Whole (1.80%), Beans (1.72%), Pulse Gram (1.35%), Milk Products (1.27%),
Pulse Mash (1.09%), Sweetmeat (1.04%), Rice (0.97%), Meat (0.75%), Pulse Masoor (0.50%), Readymade
Food (0.32%) and Bakery & Confectionary (0.32%).

Decreased: Eggs (32.16%), Tomatoes (24.95%), Potatoes (8.87%), Tea (5.43%) and Onions (3.09%).

NON-FOOD
Increased: Motor Fuels (3.74%), Hosiry (1.85%), Cotton Cloth (1.61%), Woolen Readymade Garments
(1.08%), Hospitals Services (0.94%), Electricity Charges (0.90%), Personal Grooming Services (0.89%),
Appliances/Articles/Products for Personal Care (0.87%), Solid Fuel (0.68%) and Plastic Products (0.62%).

Decreased: Liquified Hydrocarbons(1.76%).


YEARLY ANALYSIS [February, 2024 over February, 2023]

4. CPI National for the month of February, 2024 increased to 23.06% over February, 2023. The
Urban CPI recorded an increase of 24.87% while Rural CPI recorded an increase of 20.54%.

Gur (46.50%), Fresh Vegetables (46.23%), Wheat Flour (44.95%), Beans (41.37%), Beverages (40.26%), Tea
(31.69%), Pulse Mash (28.85%), Dry Fruits (24.99%) & Fish (24.99%) each, Sweetmeat (24.06%), Potatoes
(22.40%), Milk Powder (21.67%), Pulse Masoor (20.95%), Wheat Products (20.92%) and Milk Products
(20.51%).

Decreased: Vegetable Ghee (15.41%), Mustard Oil (14.30%), Cooking Oil (14.20%), Fresh Fruits (5.62%),
Pulse Gram (0.73%), Eggs (0.30%), Besan (0.18%) and Gram Whole (0.05%).

NON-FOOD:
Increased: Gas Charges (318.74%), Electricity Charges (74.88%), Transport Services (35.07%), Text Books
(34.72%), Newspapers (34.15%), Accommodation Services (29.51%), Appliances/Articles/Products for
Personal Care (28.06%), Stationery (27.68%), Marriage Hall Charges (27.20%), Cotton Cloth (27.16%),
Household Equipments (25.40%), Furniture and Furnishing (25.13%) and Communication Apparatus (24.53%).

Decreased: Liquified Hydrocarbons (7.48%).

Increased: Tomatoes (98.87%), Cigarettes (76.85%), Sugar (53.35%), Fresh Vegetables (53.25%), Gur
(47.72%), Wheat Flour (44.19%), Beverages (42.00%), Beans (39.89%), Tea (36.30%), Pulse Mash (36.00%),
Potatoes (27.49%), Bakery and Confectionary (25.65%), Rice (24.79%), Butter (24.40%), Readymade Food
(24.17%) and Milk Products (24.03%).

Decreased: Cooking Oil (17.51%), Vegetable Ghee (14.93%), Mustard Oil (13.35%) and Onions (7.79%).

NON-FOOD
Increased: Electricity Charges (74.88%), Text Books (51.88%), Transport Services (50.81%), Newspapers
(46.34%), Woolen Readymade Garments (38.42%), Appliances/Articles/Products for Personal Care (38.14%),
Stationery (32.30%), Washing Soaps, Detergents and Match Box (32.03%), Water Supply (31.65%),
Household Equipments (29.19%) and Dopatta (27.82%).
Decreased: Liquified Hydrocarbons (0.44%).
PERIOD - AVERAGE INFLATION RATE [Jul-Feb, 2023-24 over Jul-Feb, 2022-23]

6. CPI National for the period Jul-Feb (2023-24) increased to 27.96 over Jul-Feb
(2022-23). The Urban CPI recorded an increase of 27.86% while Rural CPI recorded an increase of
28.10%.
