FORMAL
ARCHITECTURE
DEFINITIONS
In architecture, one of the most important elements when designing is the sense
of form. The form, in turn, is closely related to the architectural function, which
determines its concept.

The use of singular forms in works of architecture has always been linked to the
structural principles that resolved it. Advances in techniques and knowledge
about statics or the introduction of new materials have given rise to innovative
constructions at all times. But there have also been times when form has been
the objective. When it has become a value by itself, it has acquired symbolism
above the causes that made it possible in its origin.

a shape or figure that can be studied in objective terms.

• Form as framed in a tradition: architectural forms can only be understood in their
historical framework, taking into account their context.
• the form as the fruit or result of a formalization process: the form of a building is not
explained except from its own concept.

In the wake of World War I, an international movement of functionalist

FUNCTIONALIST architecture emerged as part of the wave of Modernism. The ideas were largely
inspired by the need to build a new and better world for the people, expressed in
ARCHITECTURE general and forceful terms by the social and political movements of Europe after
the extremely devastating world war. In this sense, functionalist architecture is
often linked to the ideas of socialism and modern humanism. A small new
addition to this new wave of functionalism was that not only should buildings and
DEFINITIONS houses be designed for functionality, but architecture should also be used as a
means to physically create a better world and a better life for people. in the
In architecture, functionalism is the principle that buildings should be designed broadest sense . This new functionalist architecture had the greatest impact in

obvious than it seems, and is a matter of confusion and controversy within the
profession, particularly with regard to modern architecture.

-Break with the architectural forms of the past.
-Search for a new language, based on the simplicity of forms, that responds to
the needs of urban and industrial growth.
-Use of elementary volumes: cube, cylinder, sphere, etc.

-Priority to construction over decoration, to internal space over external

appearance. It arises as a rejection of modernist decorativeism.

-Demployment predominance of new materials such as concrete, cement,

FUNCTIONALIST
ARCHITECTURE
DEFINITIONS
As antecedents of Rationalism we have all the architecture of the Chicago
School that developed its production at the end of the 19th century and the first
quarter of the 20th century in that North American city and later in New York.
Sullivan, the leader of the Chicago School, had said that Forms follow function,
well, that idea will be the fundamental characteristic of rationalist architecture,
that the building is practical and that the form of the construction adapts to the
function. for which the building has been conceived. An important idea is that
we react against the decorative (basic element of Modernism) and try to build
useful and functional spaces.

MIES VAN DER ROHE

One of the fathers of the modern movement, Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969)
understood architecture as something living and changing, as "The will of an era
translated into space." He stripped his works of everything superfluous to find the
essence and express, through reason and function, his idea of beauty: elegance,
proportion and precision. He, above all, considered architecture to belong to an era
and not to an individual.

ALVAR AALTO
Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) He was a prominent architect, designer, sculptor and painter who
marked a milestone in 20th century architecture. His trips abroad enriched his training and
changed his way of understanding design and architecture in general, so that he converted
his style into more modern and international designs. He was a disciple of the great theorist
of modern architecture.
