Description SA
Characteristics The common name of this fruit is mango and the scientific name Manguifera. It
belongs to the Anacardiaceae family and is a robust tree tolerant of adverse
conditions; It is native to South Asia.
The mango is an evergreen tree with a wide, bushy crown that can reach a height
of 25 to 30 meters. The leaves are lanceolate, about 25 cm long. long and dark
green. The mango fruit is fleshy with fiber. The shape is commonly oval and can
be round or very elongated. The peel is soft and waxy, and surrounds the edible
part, which is yellow when ripe.
The size, shape and other characteristics of the fruit vary depending on the
variety. The size varies from 5 to 25 cm. long, and the weight varies from 50 gr. up
to more than 2 kg. The color is greenish, yellow or red, this being a very important
characteristic for markets such as the United States.
Although the fruit could be ripened on the tree, it is normally harvested when it is
still firm and physiologically ripe (full), in case it is destined for export. The fruit
ripens from May to October, depending on the variety, and is produced alone or
in a pot.
Mango has been given different uses, in addition to being consumed as fresh fruit,
in juices or sliced; It is also processed in the form of puree, pulp, jam, pieces and
slices in syrup, nectars and others.
