The New International Airport of Mexico City.

The present work is an analysis of the new airport project or international of Mexico
City, which is a comprehensive plan that aims to improve living conditions
throughout the area, it will talk about the location and description of the area, the
social, economic and environmental impact that the construction will have in the
country , the technical characteristics of the airport, the financing it will have as well
as the use that will be given to it, this work consists of publicizing the new project
that the government intends to carry out.
For more than two decades, there has been a need to expand the capacity of the
Mexico City International Airport so that it is in line with the growth of the country.
The increase in passenger and freight transportation has meant that, to date, the
airport's capacity is insufficient. Since the beginning of the present administration,
the Government of the Republic took on the task of solving the airport need in the
center of the country. To this end, together with experts of national and
international recognition, aeronautical, hydrological, geotechnical, environmental,
architectural and engineering studies were carried out to determine the most
appropriate characteristics of the New Airport. The president of Mexico, Enrique
Peña Nieto, presented in September the details of the new Mexico City airport
project, which offers great benefits and opportunities to our country.
The new airport will be designed by Norman Foster and Fernando Romero,
renowned architects, with a unique design, inspired by the roots and
monumentality that have distinguished our architecture since pre-Hispanic times,
with the elements of the national shield: the eagle, the snake and the cactus, which
will be represented in the airport design.
It will be built on a land of approximately 4,431.1640 hectares located east of the
city, and approximately 14 kilometers east of the existing Mexico City International
Airport (AICM). The site is limited to the north by the "El Caracol" solar evaporation
deposit, to the south by the Peñón Texcoco highway, to the east by farmland, and
to the west by urbanized areas of the Gustavo A delegations. Madero, Venustiano
Carranza, and the municipality of Ecatepec de Morelos.
The land where the new airport is planned to be built is muddy and saline soil
because it was previously a lake, despite this the government considers the
Texcoco area as the best location for its placement, due to its proximity to the city,
allows meeting future demand thanks to simultaneous approaches, green areas,
the agricultural vocation and cultural heritage of the region and aeronautical
viability with adequate meteorological and visibility characteristics will be protected.
Despite everything, this experts such as José Luis Luege Tamargo, president of
the possible city association and former president of conagua, and Arch. Roberto
Eibenschutz former secretary of Urban Development and Housing, government of
the federal district. They consider the placement of the new airport in the area to be
a serious mistake, since the area is considered to regulate water by nature and
would affect the complete development of the city in any point where it is wanted to
be located in the metropolitan area due to overpopulation, expressed in an
interview broadcast on television by Excelsior.
According to the project, a 4 ha Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) will be built.
This area is planned to allow all the functionality and expansion required for the
construction period of the Project. The WWTP will be located next to the Central
Services Plant and will have a treatment capacity of 11,830 m3 /day. The treated
water will be used for internal sanitary flushing, sprinkler irrigation and the cooling
tower compound supply.
There will be one power supply containing two 20 MVA feeders at 23kV from each
of the two proposed receiving substations (230kV to 23kV). This service will be
provided by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).
There will be a development of external roads that will provide access to the
Project site, in addition they will distribute the vehicular traffic of the main regional
road networks to these areas, a new overpass would be built in the connections to
the tree-lined road (tree-lined road west, central tree-lined roadway and eastern
tree-lined roadway), to have access from the Peñón-Texcoco highway to the
Project site, a new overpass would also be built where the Mexiquense Exterior
Circuit meets the northwest corner of the Project site This overpass It would allow
access from the north to the loading area on the North side. A project is
contemplated that considers the expansion of the following public transportation
network, such as the express train that will provide an express connection from the
center of Mexico City to the Airport, the Metro service that will connect the new
airport with one of the three lines (line 1, 5 and 9) of the Metro, lines 4 and 6 of the
MetroBus will be extended towards Aerotrópolis and towards the airport air
terminal area and the Mexibus that will offer the service through the Circuito
Exterior Mexiquense and then in Circunvalación Avenue and on the main
Boulevard towards the airport terminal area.
The construction of internal roads is also planned, such as the Main Boulevard with
a total width of 59 m with a central median of 25 m, two types of avenues, Avenue
A which is 36 m wide and includes a small median. , two traffic lanes and one lane
in each direction for the MetroBus. Wide sidewalks and a separate bike lane are
also provided. And Avenue B, which is 34 m wide, and includes a small median
and two traffic lanes in each direction. Wide sidewalks and a separate bike lane
are also provided. There will be streets running west-east and north-south. The
streets provide secondary access to the interior blocks. These streets are 20m
wide with parking on one side of the street, with a separate bike lane and 4.5m
wide sidewalks. Pedestrian Paths that represent secondary access in interior
blocks that constitute the wide 34 m medians that will be placed throughout the
development site. These paths are 8m wide and allow for parking next to the park
and the pavement is shared between cars, pedestrians and cyclists. And alleys are
12 m wide and have continuous pavement, allowing them to be shared between
cars moving at low speed, pedestrians and cyclists.
With the construction of the new airport, it is planned that Mexico will occupy a
place within the most important economies in the world, which will increase the
integration of the different regional markets and the expected demand for
passengers in the long term represents a great opportunity for socioeconomic
development for México.se plans to generate 600,000 new jobs according to the
government of the state of Mexico, Eruviel Ávila. While the head of government of
the Federal District, Miguel Ángel Mancera, said that for every million passengers,
a thousand direct jobs and 5,000 indirect jobs can be generated.
The project plans to promote the development of the region's inhabitants, promote
the creation of health centers, educational institutions, housing and municipal
services, and will create green spaces that absorb CO2 and transform it into
oxygen.
The regional development plan for the new airport will reduce pollution levels in the
area. The change to the new route reduces noise impacts by 95% compared to the
current airport.
The airport will be 100% sustainable with 100% clean energy operation, the area of
interest for bird conservation will be preserved, 9 rivers in the eastern area will be
cleaned, there will be 30% savings in water consumption, 70% of water use will
come from its own treated wastewater.
The construction of this airport will be one of the three largest airport infrastructure
projects in the world today. The Federal Government has set the goal of the airport
being a world leader in sustainable design, construction and operation.
Aiming to be on par with or surpass large airports, such as Hong Kong
International Airport, one of the busiest airports not only in Asia, but in the entire
world, and in recent years it has been considered one of the most important
airports worldwide, also designed by Norman Foster. It has the capacity to
transport nearly 35 million passengers per year. It was a project with great
obstacles in construction but with great expectations for the future.
The construction of the new Mexico City airport will initially cost 169,000 million
pesos (mp). It will be financed in part with the cash flow (own income) of the
Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and with the issuance of debt by the
federal government, 98,000 million pesos will be from the federation's expenditure
budget and 71,000 millions of pesos will be private.
The uses that will be given will be 4,700 million pesos for social works, 16,400
million pesos for hydraulic works (lagoons, tunnels and canals), 20,500 million
pesos for the design, engineering and management of the project and 127,400
million pesos for airport infrastructure (terminal, control tower , track, auxiliary
facilities). A project with 550 thousand m2 of surface, 5,126 parking spaces, 42
remote positions and 94 contact doors is planned to be built in stages. The first will
have three lanes for simultaneous use to transport 50 million people per year, with
an average of 137 thousand per day and 550 thousand operations per year, with
an average of 1,500 per day. The second includes six runways to serve 120 million
passengers.
The construction of this new airport will allow future generations of engineers to
work on it, but for that they have to be prepared, with theoretical and practical
knowledge. According to President Enrique Peña Nieto, he said that the airport
also contemplates the construction of aeronautics and aviation universities, in
addition to new housing developments. But I consider that it would not only be for
aeronautics and aviation, it would also be for civil engineering or other careers that
could be performed in the construction industry.
With all this, I conclude that the project for the new international airport in Mexico
City will be a landmark work of infrastructure and the best in Latin America with
cutting-edge facilities, a project that will generate great opportunities for Mexico.
New engineers and future engineers have the opportunity to participate in this
great project for which they will have to prepare since they will have to compete not
only with engineers from Mexico but also from other places in the world.
