Section A

Answer all questions.

1 The probability distribution of a discrete random variable 𝑋 is given by [2 marks]


𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑟) = 𝑚(𝑟 + 2) for 𝑟 = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4. Find the value of 𝑚.

2 Variables 𝑥 and 𝑦 are such that when 𝑒 𝑦 is 𝑒𝑦


plotted against 𝑥, a straight line graph is 𝑥

obtained. Diagram 1 shows this straight line (3, 5)

3 a) Find the coordinates of stationary point for the curve 𝑦 = 𝑥 3 − 6𝑥 2 + 12𝑥 − 5.

b) Hence, determine the nature of the stationary point. [4 marks]

The sum of the first terms of an arithmetic progression is 𝑆𝑛 = 2 𝑛 − 2 𝑛2 . Find
a) the sum of the first 6 terms,
b) the first term and the common difference,
c) the value of 𝑝 if 𝑝𝑡ℎ term is the first negative term of the arithmetic progression. [6 marks]

5 The two coins with a radius of 1.5 cm and 1


cm respectively touch to each other and
stand on a straight line as shown in Diagram
2. [Use 𝜋 = 3.142]. Find
a) the perimeter, in cm, of the shaded
region,
b) the area, in cm2, of the shaded region. Diagram 2 [7 marks]

6 𝑑𝑦
A curve is such that 𝑑𝑥 = 4𝑥 − 7. The line 𝑦 = 2𝑥 meets the curve at the point 𝑃.
Given that the gradient of the curve at 𝑃 is 5, find
a) the coordinates of point 𝑃,
b) the equation of the curve. [4 marks]

7 a) It is given that ( 4) is a unit vector, find the values of ℎ.

b) Given the vectors 𝑂𝑅 ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗ = 2𝒙 + 𝒚 and 𝑂𝑇

𝑛 are constants. Express 𝑛 in terms of 𝑚, if points 𝑅, 𝑆 and 𝑇 are collinear.

c) A boat wishes to reach a jetty located 50 km east of the boat. There is a current of
constant velocity 60 kmh-1 due north. Find the velocity of the boat so that it
reaches the jetty in 20 minutes time. [8 marks]

8 Diagram 3 shows the arrangement of the first three


circles of an infinite series of similar circles. The first
circle has a radius of 𝑟 cm. The measurement of the Diagram 3
radius of each subsequent circle is half of the
measurement of its previous one.

a) Show that the area of the circles form a geometric progression and state the
common ratio.

b) Given that 𝑟 =128,


(i) determine which circle has an area of 16𝜋 cm2,
(ii) find the sum to infinity of the area of the circles. [6 marks]

9 Given the curve 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 2𝑞𝑥 2 − 3 𝑥 3 , calculate the possible values of 𝑞 if the tangent

at the point 𝑥 = 1 is perpendicular to the tangent at the point 𝑥 = 2 . [4 marks]

10 a) Find the range of values of 𝑘 for which the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + (𝑘 − 4)𝑥 + 1 lies
entirely above the 𝑥 −axis.
b) The roots of the equation 𝑥 2 + 𝑡𝑥 + 2 = 0 are ℎ and 𝑘 and the roots of the
ℎ 𝑘
equation 2𝑥 2 + 𝑚𝑥 + 2𝑚 = 0 are 𝑘 and ℎ . Find the possible values of 𝑡. [6 marks]

11 a) Find the number of 5−digit odd numbers less than 40 000 that can be formed
using the digits 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 9 without repetitions.
b) There are 𝑛 boys scouts and 𝑚 girls scouts. If two boys scouts and two girls scouts
are chosen, the number of combinations is 160 and the total number of scouts is
26. Calculate the value of 𝑛 and of 𝑚 if 𝑛 > 𝑚. [7 marks]

12 a) Express 3√2−2√3 in the form of 𝑎 − 𝑏 𝑐 .

13 In Diagram 4, 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 is a rhombus, 𝐴 and 𝐵

a) the equation of line 𝐴𝐶,

14 a) Given that 𝑓 −1 (𝑥) = 1 , 𝑥 ≠ 𝑚 and 𝑔(𝑥) = 1 + 𝑥, find
𝑚−𝑥
(i) 𝑓(𝑥) in terms of 𝑚,
(ii) the value of 𝑚 if 𝑓𝑓 −1 (𝑚2 − 2) = 𝑔[(1 − 𝑚)2 ] .

b) Given 𝛼 and 𝛽 are the roots of the quadratic equation 2𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 − 7 = 0,


evaluate (2𝛼 + 3)(2𝛽 + 3).

c) Find the value of 𝑘 for the equation 8𝑥 2 + (5 − 𝑘)𝑥 − 32 = 0 if the numerical


value of the roots are the same but with opposite signs. Hence, find the roots. [8 marks]

15 a) A 2% error is made while measuring the radius of a sphere. Find the percentage
error of the volume of the sphere.

b) Sand is falling from a pipe at a rate of 20 cm3s-1,


forming a cone with base radius 𝑟 and height ℎ ℎ
as shown in Diagram 5. 𝑟
Given that 𝑟 = 2ℎ,
(i) find the volume of the heap of sand in terms Diagram 5
of 𝑟,
(ii) determine the rate of change of 𝑟, in terms
of 𝜋, when ℎ = 2cm. [8 marks]
