Ref Details / Calculation Output

This report covers the design of shaft wall formwork which is adjoining to the
existing constructed concrete wall.

Design Design Brief of Formwork Design:

Brief ․ The wall dimension is 8.0m (width) x 5.0 m (height) x 0.3m (thickness) GST 2
․ The wall shall be constructed in one pour of concrete
․ Density of concrete: 2500 kg/m3
․ Rate of placing: 1.5 m / hour
․ Concrete Slump: 75 mm
․ All concrete pressure is taken by the anchor bolt

Design Design Assumptions:

Assumptions 1. The adjoining wall is constructed by grade C40/20 reinforced concrete
within site area, so that assumed structural stability is good enough to insert
the anchor wall ties and formed as side formwork. The design calculation
will be checked separately.
2. 50 mm thick joint filler is provided to isolate the constructed wall and the
proposed new concrete wall.
3. 150 mm floor slab is constructed be grade C40/20 reinforced concrete to
ensure the floor level is even for the proposed formwork and support
installation.
4. The following are the selected materials: -
– Plywood: Canadian 19mm Douglas Fir 7 Ply Sanded Plywood
– Soldier: 75 x 100mm timber (SC3) at 300mm c/c
– Waling: Twins 75 x 150mm timber (SC3) at 400mm c/c
– Wall Tie: Grade 250 threaded mild steel bar (Y12) at 400mm c/c
5. The work is taken place in Hong Kong in the autumn, the normal
temperature of concrete during autumn season is assumed to be 25ºC.
6. The maximum deflection is limited to L/270 span of any formwork member.
7. The form will be checked for this case which is assumed to be the worst
case.
8. Since the calculations are calculated manually, there may have some
differences with the actual figure.

Concrete Concrete Pressure Calculation:

Pressure Using the concrete information in the design brief and the CIRIA method for Appendix A
ascertaining the concrete pressure is given: -
Design Criteria - Formulae for maximum design concrete pressure:

in kN/m2
Where: -
C1 = 1 Formwork size and shape coefficient (for Wall) Appendix A
C2 = 0.3 Concrete coefficient (OPC with any admixture) Appendix A
D = 25 kN/m3 Weight density of concrete
H = 5 m Vertical form height
h = 5 m Vertical pour height
T = 25 ºC Concrete placing temperature
K = 0.771 Temperature coefficient taken as [36 / (T+16)]2
R = 1.5 m/h Rate at which concrete rises vertically
C1 × R0.5 = 1 × 1.50.5 = 1.22 m < H = 5 m OK!

Pmax = 25 (1√1.5 + 0.3 × 0.771√5 − 1√1.5)

Pmax = 41.854 kN/m2 < DH = 25 × 5 = 125 kN/m2 OK!

The equivalent fluid head is
𝑃𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑒 41.854
= = 1.674 𝑚
𝐷𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 25 Pmax =
41.854 kN/m2

Plywood Plywood Design:

Assuming 19mm COFI 7 Ply GIS Plywood is used for the face contact material.
The structural properties of the plywood for wall formwork is given: Appendix B
2
Bending Stiffness (EI) = 3.26 kNm /m
Moment of Resistance (fZ) = 0.489 kNm/m
Shear Force Resistance (qA) = 6.79 kN/m

The plywood will span over several walings and each waling will be said 75mm
wide. Thus B > (2 × t) i.e. 75 > (2 × 19mm) and loading case 58 can be used. Appendix C
If centre/ centre ply span is L the load on one span per meter is W = 41. 854 × L

Max. moment in plywood is Mmax = 0.095WL, where W = 41.854 × L / meter,

the limiting span of plywood is
0.095 × 41.854 × L2 = 0.489
Lmax = 0.351 m
As a result, the spacing of soldier is assumed as L = 300mm and
W = 41.854 × 0.3 = 12.556 kN

Checking:
Max. Moment (fZ) = 0.095WL
= 0.095 × 12.556 × 0.3
= 0.358 kNm/m < 0.489 kNm/m OK!

L−B−t
Max. Shear Force (qA) = 0.525 ( )W
L
300 − 75 − 19
= 0.525 × ( ) × 12.556
300
= 4.526 kN/m < 6.79 kN/m OK!

WL3
Max. Deflection (δ) = 0.0066( )
EI
= 12.556 × 0.33
0.0066( )
3.26
= 0.686 mm < Allowable = 300 / 270 = 1.11 mm OK!

Hence, the plywood is adequate.

Method Method Statement for Wall Formwork

Statement
This method statement is a general outline for formwork erection for the project

1. All works shall be done with accordance to approved method statement,

project specifications and risk assessment. Request for inspection shall be
submitted for Engineers approval prior to the works commencement.

2. Scaffolding shall be erected by qualified scaffolding erector and inspected on

Form 5 by competent person. The Form 5 should be displayed in prominent
positions on the scaffold.

3. Set out the reference grid lines of wall and establish all reference points /
levels as per approved drawing to ensure the correct positions and the
verticality of wall prior to the commencement of the works.

4. Drill holes on the existing walls to required position and depth, inject Hilti
RE-500 injection adhesive into the holes.

5. Install the wall tie bolts according to formwork design to resist lateral
pressure and avoid any movement or deformation of the formwork during
concrete placing.

6. Lay 50mm thick joint filler vertically through the surface of adjoining wall to
isolate the structures.

7. Rebars shall be fixed rigidly in position in accordance with the formwork

design and securely tied together with approved tie wires. The ends or wire
shall be bent into the concrete.

8. Install 19mm plywood panels as the face contact material. Formwork shall
be firmly supported and in accurate positions. The formwork shall be drilled
holes for bracing the wall ties through the plywood.

Method Method Statement for Wall Formwork (Cont’d):

Statement
9. Install 75mm x100mm timber soldiers at 300mm c/c evenly along the length
and fixed by nails on the plywood to provide direct vertical structural
support.

10. Install twins 75mm x 150mm timber walings at 400mm c/c evenly along the
height and directly clamped by tie bolts to prevent movement of formwork.

11. Install 75mm x 100mm timber struts at 500mm c/c and insert on the ground
to plumb the formwork and secure it against wind loads.

12. Final checking on the formwork to ensure the formwork and all bracings are
erected in position, all gaps shall be sealed by sealant and the joint shall be
tight and not permit grout loss.

13. Carry out concrete casting by using concrete pump layer by layer around
500mm height to reduce concrete lateral force on formwork.

14. Vibrators shall be used continuously and systematically during placing of the
concrete until the expulsion of air has practically ceased. Once the concrete
has reached the required height, the exposed surface will be trowel and
covered for protection.

15. After casting the concrete approximately 24 hours until the concrete has
gained sufficient strength, the wall formwork shall be dismantled by
untightening of wall ties and walings.

16. Clean the concrete debris from formwork and stored at the designated
location properly for the further re-usage.
