University Library Transcript
Good morning and welcome to the University Library. We are going to do a guided tour
this morning. We’ll visit each floor and I am also going to explain our borrowing policy, how
to access high demand books and photocopying. We have over 30 subject collections in
the University Library. We hold collections for all the Social Sciences, so Psychology,
Sociology and Politics, Modern Foreign Languages, Sciences and Literature. There are a
few collections we don’t hold here, namely Medical and Healthcare collections. There is a
separate, smaller library for healthcare topics.
Right, let’s go inside. If you could all just gather around thank you. Now, to your left is the
enquiries desk. If you need help getting your library card, if you’re not sure where to find
something in the Library, then the enquiries desk staff can help you. The Enquiries desk is
open from Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm. Please note the enquiries desk is NOT staffed
at weekends and the opening hours are much shorter than the main opening hours.
The Library is open 7 days a week, from 8am to midnight, except for Sundays when we
close at 4 o’clock in the afternoon.
Past the Enquiries Desk, you can see the Borrowing Desk, this is where you can take out
and return your books. You can take books out for either one or two weeks, it depends on
the type of book. Books with a red spot can be borrowed for one week and books with a
blue spot can be taken out for two weeks. There are fines for books that are not returned
on time.
On our right is the High Demand section. This section contains books which are on
recommended reading lists from your lecturers and are in very high demand. Loans for
books from the High Demand Collection are much shorter that the other books in the
library, just three days. They are not on the shelves and instead, they are kept behind the
counter. It is possible to renew them and keep them for a bit longer, however if someone
else requests them in this time, you must return them the following day. You should also
note that fines for books from the high demand section are higher than from other sections.
If you do not return a high demand book on time your library card may be suspended for a
short time.
In front of us, in the middle of the room, you can see the self-issue machines. If you want
to take out or return a book and the Borrowing Desk is closed, you can use the self-issue
machines. We also encourage you to use the self-issue machines at any time, as this
helps keep queues shorter. All you need is your library card.
Also here on the ground floor we have a vending machine with cold drinks, hot drinks and
snacks. Please note that food and drink can only be consumed on the ground floor. No
food or drink is permitted anywhere else in the library.
OK, there are lifts at the back of the room, opposite us and stairs at the back on either
side. Let’s all take the lift to the first floor.
……….
Right, here we are on the 1 st floor. As you can see, you can also take the stairs which are
next to the lifts. In case of an emergency or if the fire alarms goes off, please take the
stairs. There are fire exits at each end of the building, on every floor. Just look for the
green fire exit signs.
Now on the first floor, you can find all the social sciences. If you need any information or
guidance on our cataloguing system, we do a separate tour. Please ask me later if you are
interested. On this floor, different to the other floors, there is a silent study area. No
phones or electronic equipment are allowed. Also, all noise should be kept to a minimum,
so not too much chatting. There are other areas available in the library for group study. If
you are making too much noise in the silent study area, you may be asked to leave. As
you can see there are 2 PC stations, these are to access the library catalogue online.
Please note, they are only for this use, you cannot use these PCs for general use.
Ok, let’s move on………….here we are on the 2 nd floor. The collections on the 2 nd floor are
Modern Foreign Languages and Literature. As you can see there is no silent study area on
this floor, instead there is a group study room located opposite the lifts. This is a room
where you can talk, use your laptops and make more noise. If you are given a group study
project by your lecturers, you can come here and work together, without worrying about
making too much noise. Again there are 2 PCs on this floor.
…….
Here we are on the third and final floor. This floor holds the all the Science subjects. It’s
subdivided by degree programme. So at the far end we have all subjects related to
Physics, at this end we have Biological Sciences and in the middle, subjects related to
Chemistry. There is a group study area located next to the Physics section and a computer
cluster next to the Biological Sciences. As with other computer clusters around the
university, there are PCs and printing facilities.
Ah yes, printing. We didn’t see them at the beginning of the tour, but there are 5
photocopiers located on the ground floor. They are next to the enquiries desk. You’ll need
to either put credit on your library card or buy a photocopy card from the enquiries desk.
Photocopying is 5p per page. Please be aware of the legal photocopying limits, these are
displayed by each photocopier all over the university.
Well, that’s the end of our tour. Thank you very much for coming. If you have any
questions, please come with me to the ground floor where I’ll be happy to answer any
queries.
