based of 1 mark each, Section B contains two questions of two marks each,
Section C contains three questions of three marks each, Section D contains one
case study based question of four marks and Section E contains one long answer
question of five marks.

1. A charged oil drop is suspended in a uniform field of 3 × 10 4 V/m so that it

16. (a) What is an electric dipole? Derive an expression for the torque experienced
by an electric dipole in a uniform electric field.
(b) An electric dipole of length 4 cm is placed with its axis making an angle of
600 with respect to uniform electric field of 105N/C If it experiences a torque
of 16√3 Nm, calculate the (i) magnitude of charge on the dipole, and its
potential energy. (3)
17. Charges (+q) and (–q) are placed at the points A and B respectively which are
a distance 2L apart. C is the midpoint between A and B. What is the work done
in moving a charge +Q along the semicircle CRD.

18. a) Define electrostatic potential at a point. Write its SI unit. (b)Three charges
q1, q2 and q3 are kept respectively at points A, B and C as shown in figures.
Derive the expression for electrostatic potential energy of the system.

SECTION D
Surface charge density is defined as the charge per unit surface area. The
mathematical expression for surface charge density is σ=ΔQ/ΔS.
Two large thin metal plates are parallel and close to each other. On their inner
faces, the plates have equal surface charge densities of opposite signs having
magnitude of 1.70 x 10-22 C m-2 as shown.

20. (a) Using Gauss’s law, derive expression for intensity of electric field at any point
near an infinitely large plane sheet of charge having uniform positive charge
distribution.
(b)The electric field components in the following figure are Ex = 𝛼x, Ey = 0, Ez=
0; in which 𝛼 = 400 N/C m Calculate (i) the electric flux through the cube,
and (ii) the charge within the cube. Assume that a = 0.1m
