REPORTED SPEECH

A. REPORTED REQUESTS.
1. FRIENDLY AND INFORMAL.
“Do you think you could help me?”
She asked me to help her.

“Please don’t tell anyone”


She asked me not to tell anyone.

2. POLITE AND FORMAL


“Would you mind signing your name, please?”
“Could you sign your name, please?”
He asked me to sign my name.

“Would you mind not smoking?”


“I’d rather you didn’t smoke”
“She asked us not to smoke”.

3. WITH AUTHORITY.
“Leave me alone!”
He told her to leave him alone.

“Don’t move!”
He told us not to move.

EXERCISES.
1. REPORT THE FOLLOWING REQUESTS:
1. “Would you mind opening your suitcase, please?” She asked me to open my suitcase
2. “Please don’t wake me before eight.” he asked me to not wake up her before eight
3. “I’d rather you didn’t pay by cheque.” he asked me not to pay by cheque
4. “Come on, move back. Move back there!” He told me to move back.
5. “Do you think you could feed the cat today?” She asked me to feed the cat.
6. “Don’t make a sound!” He told me not to make sound

B. REPORTED SPEECH AND BEHAVIOUR.

1. VERB + OBJECT + INFINITIVE


advise, encourage, invite, remind, warn, ask, recommend, urge, beg, try to
persuade, order, etc.

EXAMPLE:
He said “Please, please give me another chance.”
He begged them to give him another chance.

“Don’t go near the water, children,” she said.


She warned the children not to go near the water.

“Stop taking tranquilizers,” I said/ advised


I advised him to stop taking tranquilizers.

“Go on, John, hit him,” she said.


She urged John to hit the other boy.
2. VERB + (THAT)
admit, agree, decide, deny, explain, insist, promise, suggest, recommend,
reply, complain, remark, say, add, point out, claim.

EXAMPLE:
“I’ve been out in the sun and I’m hot.”
He explained that he was hot.

“This food is cold.”


He complained that the food was cold.

“Yes, the summers are very hot in Egypt.”


He agreed that the summers were very hot in Egypt.

“No, I didn’t steal the bag.”


He denied that he had stolen the bag.

3. VERB + OBJECT + (THAT)


advise, promise, remind, warn, tell, answer, assure, inform

EXAMPLE:
“Trust me, I won’t say a word to anyone.”
She promised me that she wouldn’t say a word to anyone.
(She promised not to say a word to anyone.)

“Go to the doctor.”


She advised me that I should go to the doctor.
(She advised me to go to the doctor.)

4. VERB + GERUND
deny, recommend, suggest

EXAMPLE:
“No, I haven’t taken your pencil.”
He denied having taken my pencil.
(He denied that he had taken my pencil.)

“Try the new shop next to the bank.”


He recommended trying the new shop next to the bank.
(He recommended that I should try the new shop next to the bank.)
5. VERB + OBJECT + PREPOSITION + GERUND
accuse, blame, congratulate on

EXAMPLE:
“You did it.”
He accused me of doing it.

“You stole my apple”


He blamed me for stealing his apple.

“Congratulations. You have just won the first prize.”


He congratulated me on winning the first prize.

6. VERB + INFINITIVE
agree, decide, offer, promise, refuse, threaten

EXAMPLE:
I will go to your party.
She agreed to go to my party.

No, I won’t do it.


She refused to do it.

If you don’t come to the meeting, you’ll get fired.


He threatened to fire me if I didn’t come to the meeting.

7. VERB + PREPOSITION + GERUND


apologise for, insist on

EXAMPLE:
“Sorry, I’m late.”
He apologised for being late

“I’ll do it. I’ll do it.”


He insisted on doing it.
EXERCISES

COMPLETE THE SECOND SENTENCE SO THAT IT HAS A SIMILAR MEANING TO THE FIRST
SENTENCE. USE THE WORD GIVEN AND OTHER WORDS TO COMPLETE EACH SENTENCE. YOU MUST USE
BETWEEN TWO AND FIVE WORDS. DO NOT CHANGE THE WORDS GIVEN.
