Performance-Based Task

in
Basic Calculus Grade 11

I. Performance Standard
The learners investigate, analyze, and solve optimization problems, related rates problems, and
tangent and normal line at a given point on a curve.

II. Objectives
The learners will be able to …
1. accurately illustrate optimization problems, related rates problems, and tangent and normal line;
2. derive equations from optimization problems, related rates problems, and tangent and normal line;
2. solve accurately real-world problems involving derivative of a function;
3. create an output that shows both neatness and accuracy; and
4. work collaboratively within a group.

III. Performance Task

A. Solve following problems. Provide a complete procedure on how you achieve your solution.
A. OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS
1. An open – top box is to be made from a square cardboard having the length of 6 ft. This is done
by cutting out congruent squares from each corner and folding up the extra sides left by the cut –
out squares. Find the largest volume that the box can have.
2. Mr. Lancelot wants to fence a rectangular field with an area of 300 m 2. One of the longer sides
of the field is a river which requires no fencing. What must he do if he wants to minimize the
fencing cost.
B. RELATED RATES PROBLEMS
1. A circular oil slick floats on the surface of still water. Its area is increasing at a rate of 10 m 2/min.
at what rate is the radius (r meters) increasing.
2. Grain is ejected from a chute at a rate of 0.1 m 3/min to form a heap on a flat horizontal floor.
The heap is in the form of a circular cone of semi-vertical angle 45 o. Find the rate (in meters per
minute) at which the height of the cone is increasing at the instant 3 minutes after the opening of
the chute.
C. TANGENT LINE AND NORMAL LINE
1. Find the equation of the tangent and normal line to the curve xy=8 at (2, 4).

B. Content
1. Cover Page: (See Sample)
a. Title of the output: Optimization Problems, Related Rates Problems, and Tangent and Normal Line
b. Names: e.g., Juan M. Dela Cruz
c. The Institutional Affiliation: Senior High School Department, King’s College of the Philippines
d. Course Title: General Mathematics
e. Name of Teacher
f. Date of Submission
2. Pagination and Table of Contents
Cover Page is counted as page i, but the paging is visible on the page.
Table of Contents is counted as page ii.
Table of Contents starts with the first problem which is page number 1.
3. Word problems and complete step – by – step procedures
4. Include necessary figures, charts, and graphs
C. General Instructions
1. Use long bond (8.5” by 13”) paper
2. Encoded: use Tahoma 11
3. One page per item
4. Compile in a clear front folder
5. Put 1-inch margin at all sides
6. Submission will be on or before May 09, 2023
