1 What is an Embedded System?

Embedded System is a combination of computer


software and hardware which is either fixed in
capability or programmable. An embedded system
can be either an independent system, or it can be a
part of a large system. It is mostly designed for a
specific function or functions within a larger system.
An embedded system is a micro-processor based
system that is built to control a function or range of
functions.
It is a combination of computer hardware and
software, and perhaps additional mechanical or other
parts, designed to perform a dedicated function.
it is an arrangement where all its component
assembles work according to the specific define rules.
For example, a fire alarm is a common example of an
embedded system which can sense only smoke.
2. Goals of embedded technology

• The goals of a cache aware optimization
technique should be to: – Minimize the stride by
which data is accessed from memory Minimize
the stride by which data is accessed from
memory • Stride-1 processing would represent
the case where data elements were accessed
from consecutive, sequential memory locations
• Stride-2 processing would represent the case
where data elements were accessed from every
other memory location • Stride minimization is
a technique for increasing spatial locality of
reference – Access data in a block-like fashion

technique whereby data is processed in blocks
that fit in the cache • Accessing data in a

3 Why do we need embedded


systems?
The first reason why we need embedded systems is
because general-purpose computers, like PCs, would
be far too costly for the majority of products that
incorporate some form of embedded system
technology. Another reason why we need embedded
systems is because general-purpose solution might
also fail to meet a number of functional or
performance requirements such as constraints in
power-consumption, size-limitations, reliability or real-
time performance etc.
The digital revolution, started decades ago, has
reached a stage that we cannot conduct our normal
modern daily lives without this technology. Indeed, it
is safe to say that we already own at least one piece
of equipment, which contains a processor, whether it
is a phone, a television, an automatic washing
machine or an MP3 player.
The colossal growth of processing power in small
packages has fuelled the digital revolution. All sectors
of the economy have been influenced by the digital
revolution and the industry has experienced
tremendous developments in all aspects of
engineering disciplines

4. Advantages of Embedded
System

 Embedded System simplified hardware which,
which reduces costs overall.

 The embedded system is useful for mass

 It optimizes the use of system resources.
 It has a low power operation.

5. Disadvantages of Embedded
System
Here, are important cons/ drawbacks of using
Embedded system.
To develop an embedded system needs high
development effort.
 It needs a long time to market.
 Embedded systems do a very specific task, so it
can't be programmed to do different things.
 Embedded systems offer very limited resources
for memory.
 It doesn't offer any technological improvement.
 It is difficult to backup of embedded files.
