1. Identify the function of the following utterances.

3. Correct the student’s error and explain why the original sentence is not
appropriate.

a) I had left India when I had been small.

I left India when I was young

The original sentence is not appropriate as there was no need of using “had” and the

word “Young” has to be used as it is an adjective.

b) I should to phone my father.

I should call my father

It is not appropriate as in order to contact someone, a phone can be used to call

them.

c) I look forward to meet you.

I look forward to meeting you

It is not appropriate since the sentence is regarding future thus a present continuous
verb must be used.

d) She made her homework last night.

She did her homework last night

The verb “made” is not appropriate as it used for producing something whereas “did”
refers to actions.

e) That chocolate cake is very heavy.

That chocolate cake is heavier

“Very heavy” is not the appropriate way of using the adjective “heavy” instead it

should be “heavier” as the Noun “cake” is being compared.
