EE 233 – DC-AC MACHINES

DC MOTOR PROBLEM.

1. A 230 volt shunt moto has an armature resistance of 0.26 Ω. Assuming a 2 volt brush drop. Calculate
the counter emf when the armature current is 35.4 A.

2. A 250 volt shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.38 Ω. What current will flow in the armature
when the counter emf is 227.5 volts? (Assume a 2 volt brush drop)

3. In Prob. 2, what is the total voltage drop in the armature circuit?

4. A 500 hp 600 volt compound motor operates at a speed of 495 RPM at full-load. If the flux per pole is
9.1 x 106 Maxwells and the armature resistance is 0.015. Calculate (a) the counter emf; (b) the armature
current. (Assume the value of K=1.5 x 10-7 and a brush drop of 5 volts.)

5. If the load on the motor of Prob. 4 is increased so that the armature current rises to 800 A, at what
speed will the motor operate, assuming that the flux increases 9%?

6. When the load in Prob.4 is removed, the speed rises to 560 rpm. What is the regulation of the motor?

7. A 10 hp 1750 rpm 550 V shunt motor has an armature resistance of 1.55 Ω. If the armature takes 14.8
A at full-load. Calculate (a) the counter emf developed by the motor, (b) the power developed by the
motor in watts, and in horsepower. (Assume a 5 volt brush drop).

8. When a mot\or is operating under load, the armature takes 8280 W and its current is 36 A. If the
armature-circuit resistance, including brushes, is 0.4 Ω, what horsepower is developed by the motor?
PM=10.4 hp

9. A 5 hp 2 V shunt motor takes 18 A when operating at full-load. The shunt-field resistance is 115 Ω and
the armature resistance is 0.25 Ω. Calculate the value of the starter resistor if the armature current is
limited to 1.5 times the rated value of the starting instant. (Assure a 3 V brush contact). 9.1 Ω

10. In Prob. 9 calculate the resistance when is cut out of the starter in moving to the second stud,
assuming that this is done when the counter emf is 74 V and that the current immediately jumps to a value
1.5 times its rated value. 3.04 Ω

11. What would be the armature current upon starting if the motor in Prob. 9 were connected directly to
the line without a starting resistor? IA=908 A

12. A 60 hp 250 V shunt motor has a shunt-field resistance of 38.3 Ω and an armature resistance of 0.04
Ω. If the resistance in the starter is 0.66 Ω, calculate the current input to the motor at the instant it is
started. (Assume a 3 V brush drop) IL=330.3 A

13. A four-pole shunt motor has an armature with a total of 282 conductors. If each pole face has an area
of 25in2 and the flux density is 50,000 lines per square inch, calculate the torque in pound-feet for an
armature current of 85 A. The armature winding is wave. T=70.3 lb-ft.

14. What horsepower will be developed by the motor of Prob. 13 for a speed of 1420 rpm? HP=19 hp

15. A 220 V shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.32 Ω and a field resistance of 110 Ω. At no load
the armature current is 6 A and the speed 1800 rpm. Assume that the flux does not vary with load and
calculate (a) the speed of the motor when the rated line is 62 A (Assume a 2 V brush drop), (b) the speed
regulation of the motor. (a) SFL=1556 rpm (b) S.R.= 8.7%

16. A 50 hp 550 V shunt motor has an armature resistance, including brushes, of 0.36 Ω. When operating
at rated load and speed, the armature takes 75 A. What resistance should be inserted in the armature
circuit to obtain a 20 % of rated torque? Assume that there is no flux chance. R=2.14 Ω

17. A 240 V series motor has an armature resistance of 0.42 Ω. If the speed is 500 rpm when the current
is 36 A. What will be the motor speed when the load reduces the line current to 21 A? (Assume a 3 V
brush drop and that the flux is proportional to the current.) S=1194 rpm

18. A 20 hp 220 V 540 rpm shunt motor has an armature and a field resistance of 0.24 Ω and 157 Ω,
respectively. If the starter resistance is 1.7 Ω, what current does the motor take at the instant of starting?
(Assume a 2 \V brush drop.) IL=113.77 A

21. A series motor develops 164 lb-ft. of torque when the current is 94 A. If the load increases the current
50% with a flux increase of 20%, calculate the torque at the second value of current. T2=295 lb-ft.
