Some Teenagers Spend A Lot of Time Practicing Sports Which Is Harmful To Their Studies
Respected Jury Members, Ladies and Gentlemen, and my dear friends, a very
good morning to all of you. I am Harsh from class IX D and today I shall do my
best to convince you that some teenagers are spending a lot of time practicing
sports and this is harmful to their studies.
First of all, let’s make something clear. We can’t give equal importance to both
sports and studies. Giving attention to both subjects and excelling in them is
simply impossible. Hence, one needs to prioritize his goals. Because the age of
a student, my friends, is that of energy and quick learning power. In this
sensitive time, a child should focus on his studies, where he is to create a career.
Because, whether we accept it or not, swinging a bat and ball around your yard
is not going to help you crack IIT. It isn’t going to get you a job. The opposition
might say that this is stereotypical behavior, but this is actually the harsh reality
of all. Putting all that idealism and liberalism aside, we have to accept that in
today’s world, we don’t have any choice but to study, but to mug up. Moreover,
let us also reflect on the fact that even if a student is pursuing sports as a
professional career, it is a very risky option. We might think it is perfectly
rational to think of becoming a sports star overnight just because we hit a sixer
in practice today. But sadly, that is not the case, because how many parents have
you heard telling their kids, “Beta, play cricket. Make your family proud. We
are counting on you to play cricket”? How many families hope their children
grow up to win the FIFA World Cup? Just about none, ladies and gentlemen.
This is the bitter truth of existence, and we all know it. Less than a fraction of a
percent of those who try for a professional career in sports actually become
famous, actually succeed. Hence, in my opinion, studies are a safer and much
more suitable option, and if the student is pursuing that, he needs to give
exclusive attention to it.
Moreover, sports simply provide for the mere physical development of the
teenager. Sure, it is crucial to maintain good health, but can we do it at the
expense of harming our mental development? In these changing times, can we
afford to prioritize sports over studies? Ladies and Gentlemen, in this new,
technological era, it is the mental genius that is prized, and which is really in
need. Because, after all, how is an expert spin baller or a really skilled
goalkeeper going to help us in the development of, say, artificial intelligence?
Hence, mere physical expertise cannot help the country, the economy, the world
to grow, and thus, we need to depend on studies to help us achieve our full
potential.
In conclusion, I would like to say that while sports are a crucial part of our lives,
which helps us to relax, recharge, and rejuvenate, it's not really a viable career
option. And, hence, giving too much time to it, at the expense of harming one’s
academic performance, is quite a risky gamble. In these changing times, it is
often studies that help us to grow to our full extent and guide us towards our
goals.
