Michael: The Basic Teachings
"This teaching presents the concept that all of life is a circle or spiral
of experience, and that no point on the circle is better than any other.
Each point is merely a different perspective with a different lesson
behind it. We are all equally part of the whole . . . regardless of our
degree of awareness. The role of a teacher is really to remind you of
what you already know."

MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Dedication
We dedicate this book to all the older souls who have struggled
to maintain an integrated sense of self while living in and working
with a Young Soul society with all its demands and imprinting.
Grammatical note
From Michael's perspective, having seen both matriarchal and
patriarchal societies and knowing that Essences spend many lives on
the Physical Plane in both male and female bodies, quibbles about
language and sex seem irrelevant. From our Physical Plane
perspective, living in a culture where we are changing from a
patriarchal society to one where the sexes are more equal, we see a
certain sexual prejudice in the language: i.e., in our constant use of
"he," "him" and "his" when we are referring to both sexes. We have
rejected the colloquial and clumsy "they" as a replacement for third
person singular; nor are we happy with s/he as an alternative. The
exclusive use of "one," on the other hand, sounded too formal and
high-blown. So, we have opted to even things out a little by using
"she" and "her" in these cases.
All uses of the name "Michael" refer to the entity Michael,
composed of 1050 souls. Thus, the pronoun we most appropriately
associate with Michael is the third person plural — i.e., "they,"
"them" and "their" — even though this disagrees with their third
person singular name.
We trust these two grammatical eccentricities will cause our
readers no difficulty in comprehension.

The list of people who have supported and added to our
experience of the Michael Teaching are too numerous to mention.
Instead we will content ourselves with naming the handful of people
who have been of particular support in putting this present volume
together.
First of all, our sincere thanks to Anne Henly, Elizabeth Bennett
and Joya Pope — Warrior, Warrior and Sage — who were willing
to pitch in with their commentary and proofreading skills when we
were too overwhelmed by the project to bear looking at the copy
"one more time.”
Gratitude also goes to Mark and Arlene Dalton (Artisan and
King) of Gamma Graphics, Dublin, California, who were so
generous with their technical advice on layout, paste up, printing
methods, page composition and all those other technical details we
thought we knew about, but didn't.
An acknowledgement belongs in every Michael book produced
by "this branch of the Teaching" for Joy and John Perasso whose
Sage advice and Warrior steadiness have a good deal to do with the
way the Michael Teaching has flourished in this area.
And a special thank you from M.C. to Robert Van Hulle who
idealistically saw the possibilities and was willing, Artisan fashion,
to create the space to allow them to happen.

Preface
The Michael teaching sets up a different filter though which you
can look at life and, in our opinion, one that helps it make a lot more
sense. It is useful not only in looking at your own life, but also for
looking at and understanding what other people are doing. You look
at life's basic questions: Who am I? What am I doing here? What are
my relationships about? And what am I going to do with all that?
The Michael Teaching shows you a way to find those answers.
Michael is one of the few teachers we've found who, along with
encouraging you to see the Truth and be emotionally balanced, says
you should learn to work with and use everything on the Physical
Plane. When you combine all of these elements you will be an
integrated and contributing member of the human race —
philosophically, psychically, logically, physically and emotionally
balanced. That is the way to profit completely from this lifetime
you've arranged — and to move forward in soul age.
We are adding this book to the already existing literature about
Michael because we wanted a definitive treatise of the Michael
system according to our understanding. This is how we see the
Michael teaching.

Introduction
Who is Michael?
"We are an ‘entity’ of 1050 souls who lived our Physical Plane
lives on this planet. We have completed our lessons on the Physical
Plane and have moved through the Astral Plane to the Causal Plane
where we now reside and teach. We use the name Michael, since
that is the last name of the last ‘fragment' of our entity to live on the
planet. The teaching we give you is the truth as we see it from the
point of view of the Causal Plane. Our teacher is the Infinite Soul.
"This teaching is made available every few thousand years on
those planets which are undergoing intense transitions in the content
of their awareness (soul perception) and in the structure of their
civilizations. The planet Earth is now undergoing such a transition.
We have made ourselves available to you in order to facilitate this
planetary shift and to awaken those souls who are ready for a more
advanced level of soul perception.
"This universe of which you are a part is a highly-structured,
living organism, whose goal is the accumulation of new experiences
that aim toward growth and self-knowledge. This is its bottom line
purpose, as we know it. The universe is structured as a highly
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
organized game plan that allows for growth and expansion along the
parameters it created for itself at the time of the game's conception.
The structure of this game has a beginning and an end. When it has
fulfilled its usefulness, it will complete itself and flip over into a new
structure.
"We are giving you information regarding the structure of this
universe so that you can more fully understand the part you play and
your relationship to the whole. We are also giving you knowledge to
show you where you are on the circle of experience. Having this
knowledge and using it in your life facilitates your Essence and
personality in its growth.
"This teaching is not a belief system and is not meant to be taken
at face value. This information does not require your belief in order
to be valid. What we do require is that you validate for yourself
from this material what part you can use and what part you cannot.
Blind faith will not help you grow, but verification and application
of those principles that work for you will.
"We are not infallible. We, like yourselves, are on a path of self-
discovery. We do not know everything because we have not yet
recombined with the total consciousness of the universe. We are,
however, able to offer the experiences of an entity who has
completed its Physical and Astral Plane lessons and has complete
memory of those lives and experiences.
"We are individually connected to each of our students, i.e., to
those who have agreed to work with us. We assist you by means of
that connection to the degree that you are willing to be open to it and
listen to it. We work not only with individuals, but also with groups
of students who are handling similar lessons. For those who have
agreed to work with us in groups, we provide the energy and the
lessons; you provide the experience.
"We teach through mediums or channels — people who agree to
set themselves aside long enough for us to say what we want to say

Chapter 1: Cosmology
Michael refers to the total consciousness of the universe as the
Tao. There are many universes, each learning their own lessons and
dealing with their own particular game plans. The universe of which
we are a part developed along the lines of having focused and
creative energies in duality and combinations of energy patterns, the
number patterns three and seven being particularly significant. In
accordance with the Law of Seven there are seven Essence roles,
seven planes of existence, seven levels of soul perception and so
forth. The Law of Three manifests as ordinal, exalted and neutral;
affirming, denying and reconciling; active, passive and mediating.
These patterns repeat themselves in many different forms.
The motivating force is that the universe wishes to know itself.
All growth increases self-knowledge and awareness. For this
purpose, the universe creates games through which it can have new
experiences and thereby come to know more about itself. One of
these games is called the experience of separateness, i.e., the
experience of the Physical Plane.
The Physical Plane is created by slowing down energy to the
point where it vibrates slowly enough to be solid. Thus you are able
to experience having your own body, identity, and consciousness as

Part 1: Overview of the Michael Teaching
The first level of the Astral Plane is where you go when you are
asleep, out of your body, or between lives.
The second level of the Astral Plane is where you go when you
are "cycled off," having completed the Physical Plane. This is the
level from which you contact your healing masters, guides and those
in your entity who have completed their Physical Plane experiences.
Those on the lower levels of the Astral Plane learn how to contact
those who are still on the Physical Plane, and assist us in our
growth.
After all the members of a particular entity have cycled off, they
move to the higher levels of the Astral Plane where they work on
combining with each other. This is where you truly begin to shed
the ego which keeps you separate from others.
When the entity is completely recombined, it can move on to the
Causal Plane.

Part 1: Overview of the Michael Teaching
When you return to the Tao, you have completed the cycle that
began with the Physical Plane. You can remain there indefinitely,
but at any point you have the opportunity to begin another cycle.
Those who do go on to new cycles most often choose to experience
the Physical Plane from the point of view of a different Essence
role, in another entity, with a different essence twin, and on a
different planet. This variety gives you and the universe depth of
experience. According to Michael, the average number of cycles
completed by human beings (fragments) on this planet is three.
19
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
20
Part 1: Overview of the Michael Teaching
Chapter 3:
Soul Perception on the Physical Plane
As the fragment evolves in consciousness, it operates in the
world from different levels of soul perception. On the Physical
Plane, there are seven cycles of soul perception. Five of these cycles
are completely subject to the rules of a physical body: Infant, Baby,
Young, Mature and Old. Within each of these cycles there are seven
levels. The other two cycles of soul perception relate to
Transcendental Souls and the Infinite Soul.
When you first come to the Physical Plane, you arrive as a first-
level Infant Soul. You progress over lifetimes to second-level Infant
through seventh-level Infant, then to first-level Baby, and so on.
During each life, you begin again as an Infant Soul and progress
through the levels more quickly until you reach the highest level you
achieved in a previous life. You do not reach that level every life,
however. Some lives you allow yourself to become stuck at earlier
levels.
In each lifetime, the cycle and level of soul-perception you
display or "manifest" depends upon your actual soul age, your
chronological age, your experiences and the situation. People do not
manifest consistently. In each life, you give yourself experiences
which will get you in touch with the Infant, Baby, Young, Mature
and Old parts of yourself. Then, depending upon your state of being
and the circumstances, you will act out from older or younger parts
of yourself. "Older" is not synonymous with "better" because you
will give yourself challenges at all soul ages. Because of this,
someone who is struggling with her lessons as a late-level Old Soul
may look less competent than someone who is appropriately
handling tasks at a younger soul age.
On the average, it takes three lives to advance to the next level.
Not all souls proceed at the same speed. Some may complete all of
21
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
their Physical Plane lessons in 50 lives, while others may take over
300. You will advance to the next level whenever you are ready and
feel the urge to move onward, whether you are between lives or in
the middle of a life. Some quick-moving souls will move more than
one level in a particular lifetime if they focus on their spiritual
development. Changing soul levels can be quite dramatic: the
shifting perception brings on changes in your life and how you live
it. There is no particular value, however, to speed. Each entity
fragment proceeds at its own pace.
The following describes the nature of the different cycles and
levels of soul perception as well as how to use all soul perceptions
appropriately.
22
Part 1: Overview of the Michael Teaching
This aspect deals with the primitive, instinctual part of yourself and
learning how to survive in a human body. There is a close bond to
the Earth, particularly the Earth-Mother, the feminine part of
oneself. You can see in children's attraction to playing in the mud,
with bugs, insects, toads and lizards the manifestation of this
instinctual Infant Soul part. Adults often get in touch with their
Infant Soul part through ritual: for example, music, dancing,
shamanistic ritual, sex, drugs, drumming, wearing face paint and
ornaments.
The Infant Soul part can also be evoked through a bodily
experience, such as illness, accident or through an enlightenment
experience that taps into the primal energy centers. You will
experience your Infant Soul part when your survival is threatened or
when there is a perceived threat such as losing a job. Warfare,
hunting, walking alone in the dark, scary movies and situations
which evoke primal fears will put you in touch with that aspect of
yourself.
When you can detach from the belief in fear, these experiences
give you "highs" that take the form of instinctive adrenal rushes or
chills and an acute awareness. The heightened awareness is the
result of your Instinctive Center opening up to your Essence so that
it can immediately perceive any possible danger and be alert enough
to act on it. Generally, Infant Soul experiences are physically
intense, primitive as opposed to refined, and mystical in the sense of
getting one in touch with forces greater than oneself.

punishment or contempt.
They often have strong political feelings and involvements.
Young Souls such as Alexander the Great, William the Conqueror
and Genghis Khan were the founders of the great empires. The
Ming Dynasty, the British Empire and the United States (especially
in its early years) are examples of Young Soul empires. This planet
is currently populated with mostly late level Young Souls.
Therefore, the dominant political, social, and cultural systems reflect
these values.
Your Young Soul aspect is the part of your Essence which has
learned how to make decisions for itself, whether you manifest
mainly as a Young Soul or not. This aspect is capable of leadership,
particularly in the area of handling the Physical Plane. You use your
Young Soul aspect when you take charge of yourself, discipline
yourself and become determined to succeed. For this aspect, what is
"right" is that which promotes its goals, and what is "wrong" is that
which is detrimental to its goals. This part of yourself is less
emotionally connected than the Baby and Mature parts. It tends to be
goal-oriented and egocentric.
Because we live in a predominantly Young Soul society, we are
constantly bombarded with Young Soul values. Those values tell
you to be success-oriented, to be ambitious even to the detriment of
others, to make sure you know what you are doing and why. People
who do not accept Young Soul values are often judged as inadequate
or strange. A good example of Young Soul political ideology is the
arms race. The thinking behind this says that if you don't get ahead
someone else will. Survival becomes competitive.
The advantage of cultivating your Young Soul aspect is that it
has the motivation and self-confidence to be achievement-oriented
and to give you success when dealing with other people, particularly
in your career. Older souls who neglect this aspect feel that their
survival is threatened and therefore put too much attention on the

MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
First Level
This is the level of introduction, in which you experiment with
your new perception. First level souls operate from their previous
level of perception about two-thirds of the time. For example, if they
are first level Old, they operate mainly as late Mature Souls. A first
level Infant Soul will be closely in contact with the Tao. This is one
of the growing-up levels.
Second Level
The second level is difficult because you are torn between the
comfort of your old perception and the opportunities and growth
available in the new perception. Second level souls manifest from
their new perception for a period, then revert. Toward the end of the
second level you must weed out the habits and acquired tastes that
belong to your old perception in order to move on to the new.
Third Level
When you reach the third level, you are operating entirely from
your appropriate perception, except that it is internalized. You look
inward and deal with the internal issues that have come up around
your new level of perception. Third level souls tend to be more
inherently introspective and quieter than those of other levels.
Fourth Level
In the fourth level, you take your new perception out into the
world. It is a level where you are busy and visible. It also is a
karmic formation level, where you reach out to others and form
relationships with them that can be karmicly intense. Fourth level
can be similar to sixth: in fourth level you deal with karmic
formation, and in sixth with karmic clean-up.
34
Part 1: Overview of the Michael Teaching
Fifth Level
The fifth is the eccentric level. It is where you first begin to get
glimpses of your next level of perception. For example, this is
where a Mature Soul gets a glimpse of the Old cycle, where Young
Souls glimpse Mature and so forth. The experience of fifth level is
similar to having climbed the Himalayas and finally reached the top,
only to see a whole mountain range ahead of you, ready to be
climbed. In the fifth level you feel unstable, you feel that you have
lost the security of your normal perception, and you feel the drive to
prepare yourself for incorporating a new level of activity.
Fifth level souls have the feeling they do not quite fit in and need
to find ways to deal with their eccentricity. The more solid roles —
Warriors, Kings and Scholars — like to pass through this level as
quickly as possible. The more fluid roles — Priests, Servers and
particularly Artisans and Sages — can learn to revel in it because it
gives them the opportunity to explore the unusual side of their
natures.
Sixth Level
Sixth is one of the busiest levels because it is where you
complete the karmas accumulated earlier in this cycle or in previous
cycles. You feel driven to be out in the world, meeting those people
and completing those unfinished relationships with them. Sixth level
souls are often on the move and do not usually settle down for long
periods of time unless their karmas dictate that they must do that.
This is one of the levels where you may be more outgoing than is
usual for your Essence in order to reach the right people.
Sixth level Mature is one of the most demanding of all the soul
levels. A pitfall of the sixth level is that you may lose the awareness
of the need to take care of youself in the midst of dealing with so
many external relationships. Toward the end of this level, you begin
to teach what you know in preparation for seventh level.
30
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Seventh Level
In the seventh level, you relax from the activity of the sixth and
find an appropriate method of teaching what you have learned
during the cycle. It is one of the more enjoyable levels because you
can separate from the karmic intensity of the sixth and learn to flow
with life again. In the case of seventh level Young, you may find
yourself advising people on how to make their lives successful. For
seventh Mature, you would be likely to do emotional counseling of
various sorts. At seventh Old, you find a way to teach something
about the total knowledge you have accumulated during your lives
on the planet. One of the requirements of completing your
experience on the Physical Plane is that you successfully teach
someone else. Essences return as seventh Old for as many lives as
they wish until they cycle off the planet.
36
Part 1: Overview of the Michael Teaching
to guide the planet in its shift. There are many opportunities for
spiritual advancement during this time, and souls wish to be here to
experience that growth.
Because most areas of the world are populated with Young
Souls, the predominant cultures are structured and imprinted
according to Young Soul values. Young Souls value success and
competency over the emotional or spiritual areas. They also see the
world from the point of view of a black-and-white, good-and-bad,
right-or-wrong mentality. This mentality is easily viewed in the
predominant political systems. Most of television and mass media
also reinforce this Young Soul perception. Because people are
strongly imprinted by their parents and their culture, older souls
have a hard time manifesting at their appropriate soul perceptions
and tend to become stuck at early levels.
Those late level Young Souls who are approaching Mature
perceptivity will vary between trying to see themselves as right and
at the same time feeling that those strangers over there are also
recognizable human beings like themselves who deserve to be
treated as such. So it is a painful transition as the world opens itself
to being more emotionally connected and begins to drop old
authority patterns of "might equals right." These changes will be
reflected in government and economic structures, in the basic values
of civilizations, and in changing social structures and family
relationships. Mature Souls also deal with each other on a group
level, rather than from a sole authority, so Mature Soul governments
and businesses will organize themselves around group structures
rather than hierarchies of authority.
While a majority of souls are shifting from Young to Mature,
souls at other levels will also shift to higher perceptions. So, Infant
Souls will be moving to Baby, and those primitive areas of the
world in which Infant Souls tend to congregate will be civilizing
themselves into more structured societies. Baby Souls will be
38

quantity of older souls on the younger souls. When the last human
has completed her lives on the Physical Plane, the use of this planet
by humans is then complete. The planet can then be used by other
sentient creatures who have either developed here or who have been
seeded here from some other planet, if that is desired.

Part 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
*Authors' Note: One of the most common initial objections to the Michael
system is, "I don't like being put in a box,” or "I don't like systems that label
people as being limited to this or that." We would like to remind you that the
purpose of the system is not to limit or confine anyone to specific behaviors.
Rather, Michael gives insight about which of all possible pattems we will
habitually use. Remember that you are not limited by one particular overleaf;
rather, in combination, the role, goal, mode, attitude, chief feature, centers and
body type work together to define who you are and how you interact with others.
Furthermore, it can be mathematically determined that there are more combinations
of roles, overleaves and essence twins than there are human beings on the planet.
So, if you feel you are in a category, that category is individual to you alone.
43
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
44
Part 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
Kings and Warriors, the exalted and ordinal action roles, can
be recognized by their natural orientation towards and ability to
resort to action — in their desire to "do" things. This can manifest as
an ability to organize, to be direct or "hands on" in their approach to
life, and/or an ability to be great producers, to accomplish a lot.
They also are more physical in their approach to life, enjoying the
experiences of the senses and the experience of the Physical Plane in
general.
Scholars are the assimilative and neutral role. They retain and
digest their experiences to a greater degree than the other roles and
provide others with a resource of knowledge. They have an
insatiable thirst and curiosity for new information and experience.
Scholars have the ability to remain the most neutral because they
tend to see all sides of a situation. They also have the ability to act
either from an ordinal or exalted point of view.
The Ordinal Roles
Servers, Artisans and Warriors tend, in most lifetimes, to prefer
close or intimate ties, as opposed to dealing with large numbers of
people. They will tend to be quieter and more withdrawn in a crowd
and sometimes are uncomfortable in large groups. They structure
their lives around their internal experiences and their relationships
with their intimates, and will have more experience in this area than
exalted roles.
The Exalted Roles
Priests, Sages and Kings are more comfortable dealing with
larger groups of people and will, in most lives, touch more people
with their influence than the ordinal roles. They will tend to organize
their lives around exalted causes such as teaching, preaching,
healing, organizing groups or businesses. The exalted roles will be
less comfortable working as a subordinate to someone else,
particularly an ordinal role.
45
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
46
Part 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
Servers
Servers inspire and care for others by serving them, even when
they are not aware of it. The presence of a Server can seem like a
special gift because they are so willing to take care of others' needs
and are inspiring to be with. They are the people about whom love
songs and poetry are written. Servers know on an Essence level that
the quickest way to advance spiritually is through serving others,
and they know that the person who serves is the "cause" of the
Situation. Servers comprise the largest portion of the human
populaiton: 30% of the worldwide population are Servers, although
this amount varies regionally.
Servers are most like Kings in that they are controlling. A Server
with a goal of dominance or a mode of power, for example, can
easily be mistaken for a King. The difference is that they control ina
manner which is not always obvious. They can be very busy
keeping their lives under control and may not want to leave things to
others who may not handle them appropriately. When their sense of
control is frustrated, they become very uncomfortable and nervous
and they may feel enslaved by the situation.
Servers will often be so busy taking care of others that they
spend little time on themselves. Compared to Priests, who feel
responsible for your spiritual growth, Servers will take care of either
your bodily or spiritual needs. Being ordinal, they prefer dealing
with others on an individual level in most of their lives. They inspire
love and affection from their intimates and family.
Servers often find themselves in the kind of work where they
take care of people directly; for example, in medicine, nursing, food
service, mechanics, computer programming, accounting, politics, or
social services.

Part 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
Priests
The concern of Priests is the spiritual welfare of the people.
Priests remind people that they need to consider the growth of their
Essence. They are ready at any moment to tell others what they need
to look at in order to progress and to inspire them to do so.
Priests are a high-frequency role and they move quickly through
lives and lessons. They enjoy using the Emotional and Higher
Emotional Centers because of the sense of connection which comes
from being in these centers.
Priests are so willing to move ahead to the next lesson that they
often do so without having examined the consequences. They are
usually trying to convince the slower roles to jump ahead with them.
Their disregard of Physical Plane practicality sometimes leads them
into trouble, especially with the solid roles: Warriors, Kings and
Scholars.
Priests, like Servers, sense the unity of all creation and have
innate compassion for others. They make excellent healers and are
also willing to play the role of "goad," the one who propels others
along because of her ability to see where others are "blocked." Like
Sages, Priests make excellent promoters, although they are more
concerned than Sages that you take their advice for your own good.
In their negative pole, they become zealous, over-enthusiastic and
frenetic, promoting causes without due reason.
Universally, Priests have the role of propelling souls toward
spiritual advancement and of reminding the other roles that the
Physical Plane is not all there is. As with all the exalted roles, there
are relatively few Priests, only 5% of the population worldwide.

Sages
Sages are the informers, disseminators and truth-tellers. They
tell the other roles what is going on. Their job is to keep us
informed, but, unlike Priests, they do not demand that others grow
spiritually from the information they have given. They do, however,
expect others to pay attention. Sages are the expressors of the
universe, and each Sage gives great attention to correct expression.
Sages enjoy the medium of speech and can be extremely
talkative. They are the most humorous and fun-loving of the roles,
and they make excellent entertainers and media people. They teach
enlightenment through humor, showing people that life can rise
above the mundane and dull. They enjoy having an audience and
reaching as many people as possible. Although only 8% of the
people on the planet are Sages, they are so visible that they seem
more numerous!
Sages have an innate ability to know what is true. They are
quick-witted, perceptive and can be quite emotional. They make
good sales people and authors. Sages are good listeners and are
always eager to find out something new they can pass on to others.
Sages also make excellent gossipers and critics. They love to
create scenes and dramas to entertain their friends and give them
more to talk about. In their negative pole, Sages can be verbose or
overly-dramatic. Sages like written material and can be great
collectors of articles, magazines, and anything informative.

Warriors
Warriors are the organizers, defenders and persuaders of life.
They make life function in a practical manner. They express
themselves through action or force. They are the doers.
Warriors are strong-willed, focused and can be single-minded in
purpose. They dislike chaos. They are the glue that holds society
together. Like Artisans, Warriors also make up 20% of the
worldwide population.
Warriors make excellent teachers, especially of children, because
it is in their Essence to persuade, mold and imprint life into
established patterns. They are also maternal, nurturing, protecting
and caring, especially of their loved ones.
The best strategists are Warriors. They are excellent in business
or industry because of their ability to organize and to be productive
and goal-oriented. They take their ability to form matter and
persuade people into every field including the arts, sales,
management, crafts, the armed forces and law-enforcement.
Warriors are highly principled and willing to fight for their sense
of justice. They tend to be conservative in their principles. They are
also very blatant. This lack of subtlety can make them poor liars or
diplomats.
With a tendency to want to do everything on their own, Warriors
can be workhorses. They are capable of working or fighting until
they die of exhaustion. Warriors make excellent generals and
corporate leaders, although they usually would prefer to have
someone else in the position of final authority. In their negative
pole, Warriors can become coercive and even violent.

Kings
Kings strive to master and perfect themselves and their
environment. They often become authorities in their chosen field.
They are natural leaders and good advisors. They attract great love
and loyalty from people through serving them, usually in an exalted
manner. They are often gentle, kind and benevolent.
Kings have a natural ability to see the overall picture and are able
to lead people appropriately by stating what needs to be done. They
lead people to action. They have an intuitive sense of balancing
energy and will master situations by noticing where the energy
needs to be balanced. Kings are perfectionists and can be relentless
with themselves while striving for mastery of whatever area they
choose. They make good organizers and are efficient at directing
others toward getting things done. They have a natural flair and a
commanding presence.
Kings can be quite dispassionate in their evaluation of situations.
This can seem like ruthless compassion or, in its negative pole,
heartless and cruel. They make good popes, politicians, corporate
leaders and founders of dynasties. Since leaders are in much less
demand than followers, there are very few Kings on the planet —
only 1-2% at any one time.

balance and the frequency of the individual Essence lend a certain
flavor to the quality of those experiences.

Sliding
An action, expression or inspirational overieaf will slide to, or
use, its action, expressive or inspirational partner, given
circumstances, karmas and agreements. For example, in the
inspirational axis of goals, a person with a goal of growth will slide
to re-evaluation in order to rest. Or, someone with a goal of
submission will learn to use dominance to promote her cause.
Often times, when a person "slides," she will tend to go to the
negative pole of the opposite overleaf. Thus, someone with a goal of
acceptance will become rejecting when she slides to discrimination,
or a person in growth becomes withdrawn when using re-
evaluation.
A neutral overleaf, such as relaxation (goal) or observation
(mode), will be able to slide to any of the other overleaves.
Nonetheless, the person with the neutral overleaf will have her
favorite places she slides to. This system is not rigid, for individuals
recognize that they can at times use any overleaf momentarily. It

69
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Re-evaluation
Re-evaluation is the opposite of growth in the sense that it
limits the scope of life in such a way as to examine one or two
major issues fully. Being an ordinal goal, it is inner-directed and
also past-directed; the re-evaluator reviews an issue left incomplete
in the past. People with this goal will often experience being stuck at
an earlier soul-level than they had achieved in an earlier life. They
stay at that level until they feel they have resolved the issues they are
examining.
Personalities with a goal of re-evaluation are often introspective
and, in their negative pole, withdrawn. In the positive pole, they
reach a state of childlike simplicity in which they can experience a
feeling of oneness with creation. For instance, they could become
enraptured in the beauty of a flower or a cloud in the sky. Re-
evaluation is in many ways the opposite of the positive pole of
discrimination, sophistication.
It benefits people with a goal of growth to cultivate moving to
the positive pole of re-evaluation for rest. Another term which
describes this goal is "circumscription," which is to limit for the
purposes of examination. Re-evaluators can slide to growth in order
to expand and take on new challenges.
Positive Pole:
Simplicity. Naive. Circumscription. Inspection. Evaluation.
Review. Atavism. State of awe or wonder. State of unaffected
simplicity.

Withdrawn. Internalized. Stuck. Bewildered. Not completely

Part 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
Discrimination
Discrimination is chosen for the purpose of picking and
choosing what one does or does not want in one's life.
People with this goal develop their critical faculties and learn to
express reasoned opinions on any matter of judgement. The process
of learning to use this goal includes eliminating the things one does
not want in one's life and forming or completing karmas related to
discrimination and rejection. It is often chosen after a series of
lifetimes in which Essence has been overly accepting or
indiscriminate.
Because they are using an expression goal, people in
discrimination usually express their opinions about things and
people around them. They feel quite justified in upholding those
opinions. People with this goal will occasionally slide to acceptance,
although they will remain highly discriminating as to what they are
willing to accept.
In the positive pole, this goal looks sophisticated and worldly,
with refined taste and judgement. In the negative pole, it can be
prejudiced, unreasonably opinionated or outright rejecting of others.
Thus the negative pole of discrimination could be said to be the
opposite of the positive pole of acceptance. People in acceptance
have a difficult time being around someone with this goal because of
feeling that at any moment they could be rejected.
Positive Pole:
Sophistication. Refinement. Perfectionism. Worldly. Highly

Part 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
12
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Passion
Passion, the exalted inspirational mode, gives the personality the
tendency toward strong emotional reactions. People in passion live
their lives with energy and enthusiasm. They are outgoing
and expressive. Passion mode people also learn to deal with
identification, which is the tendency to lose your perspective in the
emotions of the moment. Many Mature Souls will act out of the
negative pole of passion mode, believing that the immediate situation
is all that is real.
People in passion express their immediate reactions to situations,
rather than merely observing and trying to control or contain those
reactions. So, passion mode lives closer to the surface in its
immediacy and inability to be hidden. People in passion inspire
others by their enthusiasm which says, "Let's do this!" and in their
ability to express their enjoyment of the moment.
In the positive pole, passion becomes self-actualization, which is
the ability to realize one's ambitions. People in passion will slide to
repression mode when they feel the need to inhibit their emotions.
Positive Pole
Self-actualization. Realization. Re-creation. Spontaneous.
Lively. Enthusiastic. Open. Emotional. Involved. Dramatic.
Negative Pole
Identification. Loss of identity. Taking the part to be the whole.
Emotional upheaval or trauma. Irrational. Unable to think clearly.
80
Part 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
Repression
Repression, the ordinal inspiration mode, is used in order to
be refined, polished, or more civilized. It is one of the more
difficult modes because the personality needs to find an outlet to
express emotions in a refined or restrained manner. Some do this by
developing a skill or art — such as ballet, music or poetry — which
requires a precise degree of refinement. Another method would be to
develop an appreciation of culture, where raw emotions have been
refined and expressed in a more restrained manner. People in
repression usually have an appreciation for beauty.
Repression mode is the opposite of passion in that it hides
immediate reactions or contains them. This gives people in
repression an air of reserve. They are uncomfortable around those
who express themselves coarsely, without dignity. They are usually
polite and proper, not extravagant in their behavior.
Repression is usually chosen for the purpose of compensating
for a past life of extravagance, or for the pursuit of elegance.
Repression mode can look similar to a goal of discrimination. In
repression, there is an element of internal refinement; in
discrimination, there is an element of picking and choosing among
things outside of oneself. In the negative pole, repression looks like
inhibition or the inability to express emotions.
Positive Pole
Restraint. Refinement. Tempered. Elegant. Sublime. Graceful.
Civilized. Cultured. Tasteful. Self-controlled.
Negative Pole
Inhibited. Suppressed. Constrained. Blocked. Anxious.
Depressed.
81
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Power
Power mode is the most noticeable of all the modes. This is
because people with this mode carry an aura of power and
authority with them, regardless of whether they are aware of it or
not. When a person in power mode walks into a room, others can
feel her presence. This is also true of the other expressive mode,
caution, although the ordinal mode is more internalized.
Power is about how one relates to others; i.e., someone in
power achieves her goal by being an authority whose word is
listened to, or by being recognized as someone with whom to be
reckoned. Power mode is more blatant than the goal of dominance,
even though the two overleaves are often confused. Dominance
works through specific issues and goals, while power affects
everything and cannot be hidden. A person in dominance says,
"This is how I can manipulate the situation to obtain my desired
result." Power mode says, "I am in control of the situation and it
will fall in line with what I want."
In the positive pole, power mode expresses itself as the authority
— for example, the person you would go to when seeking advice.
In the negative pole, power is oppressive and uncomfortable to be
around. When someone in power mode is in a bad mood or is
displeased, it is apparent to everyone around her. Whatever she feels
emotionally is expressed through the power mode to the people
around her.
82
Part 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
Positive Pole
Being an authority. Knowing what one is talking about. Having
a powerful presence. Being the person that people look to for
answers. Self-confident. Powerful. In control.
Negative Pole
Oppressive. Domineering. Evoking fear in others. Taking or
asserting power without consent. Subtly or overtly manipulating.
83
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Caution
Caution, like power, is on the expressive axis, and expresses
itself as a kinesthetic presence that can be easily sensed. The motto
of caution mode is "look before you leap." People with this mode
are cautious or wary in their approach to situations and
prefer to know exactly what they are getting into. They will have a
tendency to feel that something may go wrong before things go
right.
A lot of times caution is chosen because Essence has seen, over
lifetimes of experience, that jumping into situations can be
dangerous. In this sense, caution is the opposite of passion mode.
In the positive pole, people in caution will deliberate before they act.
In the negative pole, they are fearful or phobic for no apparent
reason.
A person in caution can slide to power mode occasionally when
she knows what course of action works for her and takes authority
with it. When someone in caution slides to power it can be a very
effective means of reaching her goal, since those around her are not
used to seeing her take authority and, therefore, offer no resistance.
The main reaction to being around someone in caution is that she
looks afraid of something, but you're not sure what. Caution can
evoke timidity in others because it expresses a subtle mood of fear,
and people can begin to mirror those fears in their own behavior.
Positive Pole
Deliberating. Cautious. Safe. Quick to recognize danger.
Tactful. Diplomatic.
Negative Pole
Phobia. Unreasonably fearful. Unable to move or act. Feelings
of hopelessness and anxiety.

Positive Pole
Dynamic. Assertive. Action- or goal-oriented. Taking a stand.
Enthusiastic. Able to lead others. Energetic.
Negative Pole
Belligerent. Pushy. Selfish. Obnoxious. Violent.
85
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Perseverance
Perseverance is the mode which is chosen when Essence wants
to create a personality with endurance, stick-to-it-iveness,
and the ability to complete long-term tasks or karmas.
Perseverance works by choosing goals and then accomplishing all
of the steps necessary to complete that goal. Once in motion,
perserverance builds a kind of momentum which can be difficult to
stop even if the goal is no longer important. This mode is often
chosen along with being Moving centered.
Compared with (for example) passion mode, perseverance
appears somewhat dull, although passion mode people wiil usually
admire the endurance and persistance they often lack. Perseverance
can also slide to aggression mode to appear more dynamic and
assertive.
In the negative pole, perseverance can be immutable, or
unwilling to change, despite the fact that a decided course of action
may now be inappropriate. Although perseverance mode can carry
the personality through long and harrowing karmas, it makes it
difficult to let go of a karma when it is finally complete. Because it is
an action mode, people in perserverance can form physical habits or
addictions which can be difficult to break. Perseverance sets the
body in motion and gives it persistance but, at the same time, it
makes it difficult to change a course of action once it is chosen.
Positive Pole
Persistent. Enduring. Goal-oriented. Able to carry out long-term
projects, aims, goals. Able to see things through to the end.
Negative Pole
Immutable. Unchangeable. Dogged. Lacking spontaneity.
Driven.

MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Spiritualist
"It could be."
Spiritualist is the attitude that brings one to consider higher
possibilities, leading to a "spiritual" point of view. Spiritualists are
more oriented towards the higher planes than toward the Physical
Plane. They tend to look at life from the point of view of what
"could" exist. In one sense this attitude takes idealism to the
extreme. Spiritualists see the world in terms of its perfection and are
perfectionists in their accomplishments. Some of history's most
powerful and effective leaders were spiritualists.
Spiritualists remind people of the interconnectedness that exists
beyond the Physical Plane. They also see the larger picture,
including possibilities that reach far into the future. Spiritualists,
however, have the most naive of all attitudes as to the realities of the
Physical Plane, and they tend to neglect the mundane in order to see
the greater possibility.
In the positive pole, this attitude verifies the possibilities that it
perceives and brings those possibilities into fruition. In the negative
pole, it takes things on faith, or through naive belief. Those with
this attitude can be disappointed or confused when life doesn't work
out according to their expectations.
Positive Pole
Verifying what really could exist. Seeing the greater
possibilities. Understanding of one's spiritual nature. Feeling
connected to the higher planes of existence. Perfectionism.
Negative Pole
Taking things on faith or belief. Naive to the rigors of the
Physical Plane. Ignorant of details. Impractical. Easily influenced.
90
PART 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
Stoic
"Whatever."
The stoical attitude is the enduring approach to life which says,
"I can deal with whatever happens — I can handle it." The stoic will
not express her feelings openly, so it is difficult to tell what she is
thinking. People who are stoics are able to pass through difficult
situations unscathed because they are willing to not make a big deal
out of it.
Stoic, like spiritualist, is an inspirational attitude and allows the
personality to see the larger picture. Stoic will slide to spiritualist to
see how life "could be." While most attitudes give one the tendency
to make something out of life, the stoic is more willing to accept the
world as it shows up.
In the positive pole, the stoic is tranquil and accepting. In the
negative pole, she is resigned, or has surrendered without complete
acceptance. The stoic in the negative pole says, "Things aren't
great, but what can you do about it?"
Positive Pole
Tranquility. Surrender, in the positive sense. Accepting the
world the way it is. Willingness to make the best out of life the way
it is. Understanding of the other attitudes.
Negative Pole
Resigned. Emotionally withheld. Not willing to confront
situations and deal with them. Overly quiet. Not willing or able to
express.

PART 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
Positive Pole
Having the ability to coalesce ideals and manifest them.
Persuasive. Having a marked effect upon the world around them.
Able to see the brighter side of life. Optimistic. Good-willed.
Negative Pole
Naive. Having false expectations. Being disappointed.
Unrealistic in outlook. Unable to achieve or meet their pictures of
how things "should be."
93
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Skeptic
"It might not be."
Skepticism is that intellectual attitude that stimulates the mind to
doubt, question and investigate to find out what lies at the base of
appearances. Since the skeptic believes things "might not be" as they
seem, she will not take anything on blind faith, but will doubt the
validity of what has been said or presented until it has been
investigated to her satisfaction.
Skeptics are the people who remind others that things might not
work out the way they expect. They will encourage others to look
for unforeseen difficulties. They are, therefore, often the people
who make breakthroughs in science and knowledge in general,
because they are not willing to accept things at face value. In the
negative pole, however, skeptics are suspicious without
investigating to find out if their suspicions are valid.
Positive Pole
Investigation. Questioning. Not willing to take things on faith or
at face value. Looking deeper to see what is really there. Pointing
out unforeseen difficulties to others.
Negative Pole
Suspicious. Having a doubtful attitude. Argumentative. Having
the tendency to make things seem overly difficult. Adding problems
where they do not exist.
94
PART 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
Realist
"It is."
Realist is one of the most common attitudes, along with idealist
and pragmatist. Realists see the world as it really is, and accept it as
such. This is different from the other attitudes in that realists do not
add their own personal judgements and expectations onto how they
see life. For realists, things are not necessarily good or bad, they are
just the way they are.
Realists are generally the people who are able to point out the
fallacies in other attitudes. Because this attitude is on the action axis,
realists (cynics, also) are more action-oriented than the other
attitudes and generally are able to accomplish a lot.
In the positive pole, realists can see the world objectively. In the
negative pole, they see the world subjectively, that is, how it really
is from their point of view. Realists will sometimes slide to cynicism
saying, "This is the way it is, and it is terrible." As is often the case
when people "slide," realists do not handle the cynical attitude as
well as a cynic does.
Positive Pole
Objective. Seeing the world as it really is. Non-judgemental.
Clear-headed. Grounded. Action-oriented.
Negative Pole
Subjective. Not willing to see other points of view. Having the
feeling, "What I say is right and you don't know what youre
talking about."
95
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Cynic
"It probably isn't."
Cynics look at life from the point of view that things will
probably not work out. In one sense, they take skepticism to the
extreme: rather than being just doubtful, they are sure that they
should expect the worst. Often their attitude works for them because
they make their lives prove their point.
Cynics have a distinctive sense of humor — what is called
"black humor." They expect the worst and are pleased when their
expectations prove true. They are not as upset about a negative
outcome as skeptics, since they don't expect to be able to change the
world into something better.
In the positive pole, cynics are wary and apprehensive, but
mildly amused. In the negative pole, they will denigrate others and
situations without cause. Being an ordinal attitude, cynics are less
outgoing than those with exalted attitudes.
Positive Pole
Apprehensive. Willing to accept the worst. Not disappointed
when things don't "work out." Not naive or easily fooled. Good
sense of the absurd. Good at business dealings.
Negative Pole
Denigrating. Sarcastic. Refusing to see the brighter side.
Thinking everything is terrible with no possibility of improvement.
Not able to listen to other attitudes.
96
PART 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
Pragmatist
The Neutral Attitude
"It must be."
Pragmatist is the practical attitude which sees the world from the
point of view of how it "must be." There is a tendency for
pragmatists to form rules, regulations and structures around how
they think the world must be. They often end up being the people
who also enforce those structures.
Pragmatist is the neutral attitude and is able to slide to the other
six, giving it a degree of flexibility. Because of this flexibility, they
can occasionally “hide out" in one or two of the other attitudes.
In the positive pole, pragmatists are practical, organized and
competent. In the negative pole, they are dogmatic, overly structured
and can seem boring.
Positive Pole
Practical. Worldly. Organized. Methodical. Structured.
Negative Pole
Dogmatic. Stodgy. Pedantic. Boring (from the point of view of
those with other attitudes.) Inflexible.

Chapter 6:
The Seven Chief Negative Features
Description
The chief feature is the only overleaf that is not chosen before
birth. Children experiment with the different features and then settle
upon one favorite sometime before age 35. Everyone uses all of the
features occasionally, although you choose one from which you
chiefly operate. It is also possible to switch chief features during
your lifetime. People usually switch by sliding more-or-less
permanently to the feature that is opposite theirs on the axis. There
are different degrees of using the features; some people use them
often and strongly, some people use them mildly or hardly at all.
All features are based upon fears. You pull in your chief feature
when you are in the negative pole of the emotional center, i.e.,
sentimentality or emotionalism. (Since everyone can use all centers,
even Intellectual and Moving Centered people get a "chance" to use
their chief feature!) Features retard growth by pulling in additional
challenges and difficulties. People will use their features to protect
themselves during times of stress. Chief feature is the favorite
device of false personality, i.e., the personality that is projected
when you are using the negative poles of all your overleaves.
Features can also be used appropriately to strengthen personality
by using them in the positive pole. This teaching encourages people
to move to the exalted side of the axis if they are using ordinal
features, as a first step to softening or erasing their features
altogether.
The way to minimize your use of chief feature is to see that you
can function without it and to strengthen your sense of self-agape
(love, forgiveness and tolerance for yourself). When you are
worried, stressed or afraid, you have fallen out of self-agape and
forgotten that you control your own universe.

Negative Pole
Vanity. Shyness. Haughtiness. Snobbery. Seeing oneself as

between oneself and others. Worrying about others' opinions of
you. Shyness in crowds or intimate situations. Having false
pretenses. Lying.
102
Part 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
Self-deprecation
Fear of inadequacy.
Self-deprecation is the feature which says, on some level, "I am
not worthy." This feature limits the development of Essence because
of the difficulty in "having," whether it be not allowing one's talents
to manifest; seeing oneself unworthy of love (relationships), truth
(knowledge) or energy (including money); or not feeling worth the
benefits of spiritual growth. In this teaching, people are encouraged
to give up their self-deprecation, either by sliding to arrogance, or
by finding themselves more worthy.
Self-deprecation is a favorite chief feature for older souls
because by the time you are an Old Soul you know how little you
know relative to the whole universe. Also, control issues and having
possessions become less important than having philosophical and
self-worth issues at that stage.
In the positive pole, self-deprecation is appropriately humble —
i.e., humble when there is a cause or need to be so. In the negative
pole, people in self-deprecation abase themselves by dressing
poorly, not attending to their appearance, not taking care of their
health or their possessions. Someone using self-deprecation heavily
will not be able to maintain appropriate relationships, satisfactory
employment, necessary material objects, nor will she be able to
manifest or develop her own talents. In addition, she will not
spiritually grow since she will even be unwilling to accept her
lessons in life.
Positive Pole
Humility. Unassuming. The reverse of haughtiness and
snobbery. Gentle.
Negative Pole
Self-abasement. Making oneself unworthy. Giving a poor
appearance. Not feeling capable. Dishonest. Not being able to
communicate clearly and directly.

MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Self-destruction
Fear of worthlessness
Self-destruction is the feature that is used when people feel too
unworthy to exist or to have what they really want. In self-
destruction, the personality becomes suicidal or self-destructive.
This can appear in the form of actually ending the life, or in the form
of self-destructive habits: alcoholism; drug abuse; illnesses; severe
depression; suicidal thoughts; being unable to support oneself
(monetarily or emotionally); bulemic or anorexic behavior.
The thinking behind this feature is that you are unworthy of
surviving or that life is so difficult that it is not worth continuing.
Everyone uses this feature on occasion, but those who use it as their
chief feature literally go about destroying themselves either quickly
(e.g., taking life threatening chances) or slowly (e.g., by extreme
substance abuse).
In the positive pole, this feature can look like dying for a cause
— for example, suicide missions in wartime. It is possible to escape
from this feature by sliding to greed and allowing yourself to have
the things you really want more often.
Positive Pole
Self-sacrifice. Dying in order to save others. Using this feature
for karmic payback where your death is owed.
Negative Pole
Suicidal behavior. Self-destructive habits or beliefs. No self-
esteem whatsoever. Giving up. Despondency. Not being useful to
yourself or others.

Positive Pole
Audacious. Daring. Plunging ahead. Willing to take chances.
Negative Pole
Intolerant. Hurried. Pressured. Not being in the present.
Worried about the future. Finding situations, others or oneself

107
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Martyrdom
Fear of being out of control
Martyrdom is the feature that gives you the feeling you are out of
control, victimized or have given yourself over to the power and
control of another person, situation or authority. Someone in
martyrdom is not able to see she is really in control of her own life.
It is difficult to be around someone who uses this chief feature
heavily since we all know on an Essence level that being out of
control is a lie, an illusion of the Physical Plane.
Control is an issue for both martyrdom and impatience. The
person in impatience strives to be in control of that most ephemeral
of elements, time. The person in martyrdom, while believing she is
out of control, strives to control others by making them feel guilty
for her supposed misery.
In the positive pole, the person in martyrdom can appear
selfless, helping others without giving a thought to her own needs.
In the negative pole, she feels life is unfair, it isn't working out, or
that she is abused. She can also feel that she is being controlled,
stepped on, used or victimized.
Positive Pole
Selfless. Giving time and energy over to the care of those close
to you or to a spiritual cause or ideal.
Negative Pole
Victimized. Humiliated. Long-suffering. "Guilt-tripping" others
for one's own misery. Not taking care of yourself or others in an
appropriate way.
108
Part 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
Stubbornness
The Neutral Feature
Stubbornness is the neutral chief feature and can slide to all the
other six. People with this feature can end up using the other
features quite often and freely. The feature is used as a braking
mechanism to slow down the growth process when situations seem
threatening. In the negative pole, stubbornness is obstinant and will
say "NO!" to any suggestions from others. It is a place where
people dig in their heels. In the positive pole, it is determined, and
will pursue the direction it has set out for itself despite any
obstacles.
Positive Pole
Determination. Having the power to get what you want. Being
able to pass through obstacles. Steadfast in one's opinions.
Negative Pole
Obstinancy. Unbendable. Unable to listen to others, particularly
to their suggestions or advice. Immovable. Unyielding.

PART 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
_ Chapter 7:
Centering and the Seven Centers
Centering is not like the other overleaves. First of all, when you
are in balance you can be in any of the centers, whichever is
appropriate at the time. With the other overleaves, you choose one
and use it and its opposite pole almost exclusively — or, if you have
a neutral overleaf, you choose one or two favorites to slide to. Even
with centering, however, Essence will still choose the centering it
will habitually use, and it is not necessarily a bad or inappropriate
habit. You can respond appropriately to any situation from any
center. It is, however, very difficult to break the habit pattern
Essence has chosen, and when you use that habit pattern
inappropriately, it becomes your "trap."
Essence chooses only from the three ordinal centers. No one is
centered in one of the higher centers. The energy in the three exalted
centers is so intense that the physical body cannot stand having that
much energy run through it all the time and would quickly burn out.
Also, we are here to do Physical Plane lessons with more solid,
slower, lower amounts of energy -- not to use higher center energy
to that degree. Humans can step into the higher centers momentarily,
then step back out of them and remember this as an enlightened
experience, but they don't stay in higher centers all the time.
You can be instinctively centered, but it is very rare. Someone
who is centered in the Instinctive would be medically defined as
insane. To have instinctive centering, the body would have to have a
hormonal or biological imbalance to keep you there. Instinctive
Center is where you have your primal fears and your survival
lessons. It's not a place you are supposed to live, although people
step into it when they are eating, sleeping, meditating, or when it is
evoked through danger, fear or threat. Less than .01% of the
population is instinctively centered.
111
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Parts of Centers
Centering is also unique as an overleaf in that each of the centers
breaks down into 3 different parts: the moving, the emotional or the
intellectual part of that center. When choosing centering, an Essence
will choose to be in a certain part of one of the ordinal centers. Since
the center's part of itself (eg., the intellectual part of the Intellectual
112
PART 2: A Profile of Essence and Personality
Center) does not lead to any useful interplay, this will never be
chosen. What is chosen is a center and a different part to slide to.
Moving between the center and its part becomes the
personality's habit, but it can also become the trap. For example,
someone in the emotional part of the Intellectual Center will
habitually think, then feel something about that thought, later
moving or doing something about the feeling (Intellectual to
Emotional to Moving Centers). When under stress and/or trapped,
that same person will think then feel; the emotion will spur another
thought, which produces another feeling and so forth. This habit can
be broken by purposely going to the third center (in this case
moving), and thus breaking the pattern, completing the circle of
centers and getting balanced again.
The best way to think about the parts of the centers is to use the
analogy of a deck of cards:

In the negative pole, those with this centering can get trapped by
frenetic, useless movement, getting more and more detached from
their emotions. Instead of going to the party to have fun, they'll
work on their chess game. They will tinker with the car endlessly,
long after it has been fixed. They have intellectual compulsions
about getting a certain number of activities done. Playing video
games for hours on end is a intellectual part of Moving Center
activity.
The trap for someone with this centering is having "second
thoughts:" doing something and then thinking, "Oh, I shouldn't
have done that" then doing something else and thinking about that.

with this centering would think about her bills, then get upset, or
think about her grandson, then get happy. By way of contrast,
someone in the intellectual part of the Emotional Center might feel
upset, then think about her bills, or happy, then think about her
grandson.
Anxiety, depression, guilt, emotional reactions based on the
idea, "I shouldn't have done that," or, "It shouldn't have worked
out a certain way," fall into the emotional part of the Intellectual
Center. Embarrassment, an emotion based on an idea about an
event, is also in the negative pole of this centering. In their trap,
people with this centering are not able to act. They get stuck in their
feelings about a thought and don't know what to do about it.

In order to be born a certain body type, Essence needs a certain
amount of genetic material from the parents chosen for that particular

one or two types. A person with Venusian parents would have a
hard time pulling in a Saturnian body. It is possible, however, to
move along the progression from one's parents, say from Venusian
to Mercurial. In addition, the following complementary types are
often born into the same family: Lunar and Saturn; Mercurial and

Physical Plane as a first level Infant Soul in your first life, you are
working towards, longing, to reunite with your entity, with your
cadre, with the Tao. What are the steps that Essence follows to
achieve that goal?
Up to now we have discussed how this universe is structured
with separate planes of existence and different levels of soul
perception. We have examined the fragments, with their particular
roles, frequencies, energy mixes, overleaves and body types. But
how do the players interact to learn lessons, gain experience to bring

MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Karma
166
Part 3: Relationships with Others
When people are in karma they are often acting illogically and
sometimes even out of character. They feel driven to do the karma,
nevertheless, and are obsessed with continuing until the end.
Anyone outside of the karmic situation can tell the person in karma
what she should or could be doing differently, what might work
better. Those in the karma, however, are incapable of taking any
advice to change their actions or the karma until it is complete.
Usually people play out a karmic payback right on the line, the
way it was done before. It will also take about the same amount of
time to replay the karma as it did to play it originally. It might speed
up a little, but there is only so much karmic intensity that a human
being can process and still function in her life.
There is no positive or negative to karma — it is all just
intensity. There are, however, karmas that the personality enjoys
more and karmas it enjoys less. You may be intensely happy and
have an intense feeling of salvation when your real estate agent finds
you the perfect house in time for Christmas; the agent may
experience an intense feeling of satisfaction beyond her usual joy at
receiving a commission and feel strangely like she has somehow
saved your life. It is still a karma -- a payback of the life where you
discovered the perfect cave for her and her family which sheltered
them before the Winter Solstice ritual. Once you and your real estate
agent entered into this karmic payback, you were strangely
compelled to work with each other, no matter what friends, relatives
and colleagues advised either of you to do differently.
On the other hand, a karmic experience might include being the
victim of a drunken driver, a soldier on an alcoholic binge. That
driver happens to be the same citizen you ran over in a chariot in 40
B.C. after a night carousing with fellow soldiers in your legion of
the Roman army. Neither side of that intensity is usually judged
"pleasant."
Karmas do not have to be initiated. If you see yourself heading
167
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
towards a karmic situation, you can stop and decide not to pick up
that karmic thread — whether it is a creation or a clean up. Once you
begin a karma, however, you will stay with it to the end. The only
choices you have in karma are putting it off until later (that life or
another), if it is a payback; not getting involved in the first place, if it
is a new opportunity for karma; or going ahead and doing it. Once
you begin a karma, you will do it all the way until the end. When
you are in the middle of a karma, you really can't judge what the end
will be if it is a payback, or how long Essence has agreed to do this
situation if it is a creation. You will, however, notice when it is over
because the intensity will be gone.
You cannot "forgive" karma or let someone off from paying you
back. There is, however, sometimes a certain amount of "karmic
transmutation" that occurs if you are paying back an Infant Soul
karma as an Old Soul. Perhaps instead of taking a life to pay back
when you were murdered, the person in karmic debt to you might
save your life or somehow give you a life by giving birth to you.
Both parties will still, somehow, experience the opposite side of the
situation they experienced before, in order to come to balance.
You can look at a karma as rationally as possible with as much
of a positive, "in agape" viewpoint as you can, or you can make
yourself utterly miserable and let it spill over into non-karmic areas
of your life while you go through it. A way of ameliorating karma is
to know you are in karma and try to act within the karma's limits
instead of acting in some additionally unpleasant way. You do this
by not embellishing the karma, making it worse, struggling or
making it more difficult than it needs to be. You can make your
karmic intensity as pleasant and enjoyable as possible by accepting
your choice in the matter: knowing that you obviously need to have
some intensity in your life in this area right now or you wouldn't be
embarking on it, you would be avoiding it.
In the beginning cycles, Infant through mid-Young, you are
168
Part 3: Relationships with Others
Sexual Karma
The most intense and obvious type of karma is sexual karma.
People do sexual karma all the time: one person gets obsessed with
another; she cares about this person and has no idea why. They have
nothing in common, yet she can't stop being in relationship. And
then, suddenly, at some point, it is complete, over. In a non-karmic
sexual relationship, you have choices, but when you are in a sexual
karma, you do not. You may be hating it, you may be loving it, but
you really can't stop.
What most people consider "being in love,” heart palpitating,
totally obsessed by the object of desire, is sexual karma. They are
not really loving a person for her special qualities, they are loving
the fact that they feel in a drugged, karmic state. It has nothing to do
with the person at all. When you really are in love with a person and
it isn't a karma, you are seeing her clearly and admiring her
qualities.
A sexual karma can turn into a non-karmic relationship after the
karma is over, but that does not often occur. Once the karma is done
and the relationship would have to be based on other factors such as
compatibility, 85% of the time both parties are in agreement that they
169
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
do not want to continue. Once the karma is over, oftentimes the thrill
is gone.
Self Karma
Self karma is an intense challenge you have provided for
yourself to work on this lifetime. Self karmas can involve just
yourself or can include your relationships to other people, but not
involve them. For example, you always wind up getting attracted to
arrogant, shallow men (or women). Your lesson is that you want to
learn how to relate to shallow, arrogant people — how to handle
them, how to get something out of the relationship, how to avoid
them, how to keep your self-esteem around them — so you keep
introducing shallow, arrogant person after shallow, arrogant person
into your life. Some of them may be in mutual karma with you and
some may not. The way you can tell the difference is to see if the
person is engaged in the intensity or not. If she is also intense about
you, there is mutual karma going on. If she is someone who may
not even know that you exist, or who feels neutral about you, she
isn't in karma with you. You just have a self-karma around that type
of person.
Other self-karmas can relate to your personal habits. You might
have a bad habit or bodily condition about which you have an
intense feeling: smoking; an overweight/underweight problem; an
uncontrollable drug or drinking habit; gambling or using credit cards
too heavily; being too physically beautiful for anyone to notice you
have a brain; insomnia; or inability to get the job you want. Any
personal challenge that you cannot seem to overcome and about
which you feel intensely about is a self-karma.

Your imprinting is the training that you get from your
parents/caretakers and society about what type of adult you should
grow up to be. You learn these lessons mainly in the first 14 years
of life. Imprinting sets up your morals, conscience and
idiosyncrasies, and the development of the use of your talents and
skills. Your imprinting is what will make you unique. It sets you
apart from those of similar role, overleaves and culture. Your
parents, your birth order, your past life relationships with those in
your family, your grandparents, your teachers, other influential

MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Ages 7-14: You learn the last 20% of your imprinting and start
perfecting the basic "form" your personality will have as an adult.
In the 0-7 year old period, while you are confused and allowing
yourself to be malleable, your parents/caretakers make sure you act a
certain way consistent with their idea of survival in society. In the 7-
14 year old period, you become a person who is basically running
her own life, while still using your parents and other imprinters as
strong mentors and guides or visions of what you do — or do not
— want to be. During this period, you begin to take charge and
control of your life.

are still young and unformed enough to go ahead and allow yourself
to get into karma that, when you are older and wiser, you probably
would sidestep.
Ages 21-28: You are still in the heaviest karmic period in your
life, but not quite as intense as 14 to 21. You are a little more in
control and adult, you know a little more about what you want and
who you are. You are often "out on your own" and use fewer
"props" — other people like parents, teachers, friends or peers — to
influence your karmas. A lot of mating and sexual karmas come in
during this time. Also, you may bring in karmic child agreements
during this period. Non-karmic child agreements can come in as
well, if you are at the point where you are ready to have children,
but the ones with whom you or your mate have the most karma
come in first.
Ages 35-42: You start manifesting who you are really going to be
as an adult in society. You start living and being a success,
175
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Life Task
A life task is a major lesson you want to get completed during a
lifetime, one of the purposes or foci of that life. Everyone has one or
two or more life tasks. A life task can be related to your career. For
example, you might want to be a great healer, a task which will pay
back karma and be good for mankind. Often, however, life tasks are
about handling an emotional, philosophical or attitudinal problem
you have not handled yet in any other lifetime. Your life task may be
learning to be a good parent or how to be an optimist. You may have
a task of working on your sexual or family relationships. You may
want to learn how to be really good with plants or animals this life.
Or perhaps you decided to have a major political influence on the
176
Part 3: Relationships with Others
world. Your life task can be four or five of these things at the same
time. You can tell what your life task is because you keep noticing
you are drawn to do lessons about it over and over again.
People start noticing their life task in the 21-28 year old period.
They start focusing in on seeing what it really is in the 28-35 year
old period. Most people bloom into doing their life task in the 35-42
year old period although they do not usually perfect their skill in it
this early. In the earlier periods, you do certain things moving
towards your life task but you really aren't that accomplished at it
yet. You get much better at it after 42 and are fully embroiled in your
life tasks after that point.
Ages 49-56: You feel like you are coming to the culmination of
who you basically are. You feel proud of yourself, good about
yourself, like you have fulfilled most of what you wanted to do
when you came to the planet this life. If there are still things that
need to be fine-tuned — for example, you never managed to get the
job, relationship, body shape that you wanted — you come to terms
with that. Either you decide to like yourself anyway or you decide
that you are going to go for those things now. You hit your stride of
feeling like a competent, comfortable leader in some areas. Nothing
can ruffle or rile you like it did when you were younger.
There is a sense of completion. If a person dies at the age of 56,
the lifetime is considered complete, as far as the universal plan goes.
You have examined all the main phases of a life. Almost all karma
can be completed by this time although, because of the longer
lifespan now, people might hold off a few of their karmas if they
have planned a longer life. There is a sense of settling in to who you
are. You enjoy life the most during this period.
Alternatively, if you are a person who never gave yourself what
you wanted, or who never looked at your imprinting during the 28-
35 year old period, you may be agonized during this period and feel
177
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
178
Part 3: Relationships with Others
generations all the time. By age 63, most people want to stop
working altogether.
Ages 71 and beyond: You are enjoying the fruits of your labors
for the lifetime. Also you are learning some specific lessons about
health, dependency/independency issues, caretaking karmas (people
who owe it to you to take care of you in your old age). Or perhaps
you Owe it to someone to hang on longer and imprint them or take
care of them, for example, in the case of the succeeding generation
dying or deserting responsibility.
Most people feel complete at this point and only live this
long if they have something specific that is keeping them here, like a
long-term karma or self-karma they have not handled yet. People
who want to get so many things learned and worked through — so
many challenges handled — that it is taking them a long time to get
through it all will live longer than age 70.
In the future, more people are planning longer life spans,
now that this option is available with improved nutrition and health
care. They want to have the total release time where they are not
responsible to anyone but themselves, they are past their karmas,
and they can relax. They want to have a rest break where they can
totally enjoy themselves and do just a few self-karmas about their
bodies deteriorating and not being able to be as active. That way
they can have some fun and enjoyment so that when they die they
will feel ready to come right back to the Physical Plane. They use
this time to let their Instinctive Center energy patterns get unblocked,
unraveled and processed.

Chapter 3:
Essence Twins and Task Companions
How do you decide, on an Essence level, what fragments to
make agreements with and with whom to form karma? Who will be
your parents, relatives, teachers, major imprinters and friends?
Naturally, the majority of your relationships will be with the
members of your entity and, beyond that, with the members of your
cadre — the group of seven entities, including yours, that forms
agreements to do Physical Plane lessons together. But among those
nearly 7000 fragments, there are a few dozen who will be in your
lives again and again: your essence twin, your task companion(s),
fragments with whom you have agreed to do monads and your
particular support group.
Two of the major relationships you can have are with your
essence twin and your task companion(s). They usually wind
up in your life, life after life. Most people who have essence twins
or task companions are with them for two-thirds to three-quarters of
their lifetimes. Your twin and your task companion often are people
you end up dealing with in an intimate fashion, as your mate, in
your family or in your circle of close friends.
181
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Essence Twin
Your essence twin comes to the planet at the exact same moment
you do your very first lifetime on the Physical Plane during a cycle,
so you have exactly the same planetary time of experience. Often, in
that first lifetime, you are identical twins or babies born at the same
moment. Usually you are not in the same entity, and usually you are
not the same role. Your twin is often born into most every lifetime
with you, near or around the time you are born so that you have a
similar history together. If you were in Greece in 40 B.C. and
Mesopotamia in 10,000 B.C., your twin was probably there, too.
That is the technical definition of an essence twin, but, after
lifetimes of experience together, a twin comes to mean much more
than that. Your essence twin becomes a person who is the other
side of your coin. She is like a mirror image of yourself, with all the
lessons that this can bring up for you. She mirrors your flaws for
you extremely well. She often has similar or corresponding flaws.
Your twin knows you well and can see what goes on for you
just as you can see what goes on for her. Nothing is hidden,
everything is disclosed, and has to be dealt with because you cannot
ignore issues in her presence. There is an inability in this
relationship to let things lie if your twin does see something wrong
or that you are not handling — or you see that in her. The essence of
182
Part 3: Relationships with Others
183
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Soul, the bleed through is so strong that even if you haven't met the
person yet but she is on the planet this lifetime, you are already
using some of her qualities in your personality, and vice versa. Once
you have met, there is a big increase in the bleed through.
It is a good learning experience to have an essence twin. Some
people are really attached to their essence twins and feel that it is the
best, most intimate relationship and has the greatest potential of
anything they have experienced on the planet. About 5-10% of
people on this planet choose not to have an essence twin. People
without essence twins have arranged a cycle where they are going to
be more independent and rely on themselves.
There is often a sexual draw between essence twins, even if the
person is older, younger, the same sex or not normally someone
who would physically attract you. The exception is a lifetime where
essence twins have arranged deliberately for that not to be so
(usually by having a familial relationship, for instance). The reason
for this sexual draw is that it pulls essence twins together.
184
Part 3: Relationships with Others
Task Companion
Everyone has at least one
task companion. This relation-
ship is about getting together
like two oxen under the same
yoke and performing one or
many tasks together. A task
companion relationship is very
compatible, without a lot of
arguing, bickering or dealing
with intense (karmic) issues.
Task companions make great
business partners and good
marriage partners. They are
good at investing with one
another. It is a very enjoyable
type of relationship with less
agony and incompatibility than
other relationships. It does not
have as much intensity to it nor
does it wind up being as karmic as an essence twin relationship.
You start out your first lifetime on the planet with one person as
your task companion, usually someone you have known from a
previous cycle (an entire circle or experience) who is in your cadre
again, although not necessarily in your same entity. Down through
the centuries, as you progress through your cycle, you pick other
task companions with whom you work well on an Essence level.
Often, by the time you reach Old Soul level, you have developed
four or five task companions.
There is less of a chance for incompatibility between task
companions because they are so productive together that usually

Part 3: Relationships with Others
Chapter 4: Monads
Aside from essence twin and task companion, you form many
other one-on-one relationships that may or may not be karmic. Many
of these one-on-one relationships, drawn together either by karma or
agreements, are monads or relationships between two Essences
which are experienced fully in both directions around a specific
issue. A monad is formed for a learning experience, but it is not
necessarily a karmic one. There are an infinite variety of monads,
invented for very specific circumstances; however, the monads
which are usally experienced fall into one of the 30 classic patterns
listed at the end of this chapter.
The general pattern of a monad is that after it has been
experienced in one direction, the Essences switch positions and
experience the other half of the monad, either later in that life, or
perhaps in another life. Then the monad completes and the Essences
can choose to work on another monad or a different lesson. The
only monad that is repeated with the same Essences is the Teacher-
Student Monad.
It is also possible, though less common, to have both halves of
the monad beng worked on at the same time. For example, in a
Leader-Follower Monad, one person could be leading the other in a
particular area and simultaneously following in another area. This
can also be seen in Pivotal-Facilitator Monads, in which both parties
are facilitating each other in pivoting their lives around certain
issues.
It is possible to have many monads going at once with different
people in any particular life. It is also possible to have more than
one monad going with the same person at the same time, and you
can usually notice that by the complexity of the relationship. The
exalted roles will generally work on the most monads, particularly
Sages and Priests. You will complete many monads with the
187
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Essences you are most closely related to from life to life. The
completion of many monads with another Essence brings with it the
feeling of intimacy of having shared many experiences together and
knowing each other in all of your different facets and personalities.
Two Essences who have experienced all the basic monads
together in both directions have what is called a Love Monad. This
is the feeling of complete trust and connectedness which comes with
having known each other in every type of basic relationship that is
possible on the Physical Plane. Considering that there are thirty
basic types of monads often requiring several lives to complete each
one, you would need to have spent at least fifty or sixty fairly
intimate lives with one other Essence to achieve Love Monad status.
Because of the amount of work and time necessary to experience
every monad together, the Love Monad is unusual and is found only
between Old Souls.
Most other monads are subcategories of the monads listed
below, but people can also invent monads for specific
circumstances, cultures or because of the desire to try an unusual
relationship with another Essence. When two people are together,
they often fall into one of the following monadic patterns, even
though they are not "doing a monad together" this lifetime. If they
are truly working on a monad, they will consistently operate out of
the monadic pattern each time they meet until that pattern is fully
experienced.

you, see who you really are (on both a personality and Essence
level), and support you in your greater life task.
If you do not have your support group around you, it is not
necessarily because your support people have not shown up in your
life yet, but may simply be that you cannot allow their support. Or it
may be that they have not shown up yet because, unwilling to be
supported, you have not yet pulled them in energetically. On an
energetic level, you may not have even realize that support is
possible.
If you do not learn to use your support group, then you are not
able to understand and achieve real intimacy with others. You will
not have enough of the varying types of support you need to feel
like a valuable, special person who has something valuable to give
to society and others. You wrap too much energy into taking care of
yourself to have the energy to go out and be prosperous on different
levels such as having really good relationships and friendships,
having all of the material goods you want in your life, or having a
healthy relationship with your own inner self.
Below are the 12 supporting positions of the support circle.
Love: The person in your love position teaches you the most about
love. She supports you by allowing you to love her and by being
willing to love you in return for who you are. This is not necessarily
someone with whom you have a sexual relationship.
i199
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Humor: Your humor position brings humor into your life, either
by being amusing to you or by pointing out the lighter side of life to
you. Some people who are experts at being in this position become
professional comedians and, thus, fill this slot for a larger audience.

Triads
204
Part 3: Relationships with Others
205
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Quadrants
While a triad is good for karma or lessons, a quadrant energy
works well for getting things done. There are four positions in a
quadrant: Love (Initiation); Knowledge; Power and Compassion
(Support). Love is the person who comes up with the game plan:
"Let's do, talk about or consider this." Knowledge talks about the
pros and cons and generally gives information about what Love
initiated. Power makes sure that the finalized game plan (after it has
been altered and modified by Knowledge) gets acted upon. She
takes action herself or pushes everyone to take action.
Compassion makes sure everyone gets along smoothly and
eliminates the difficult, triadic energy. She judges fights, neutralizes
conflict, helps everyone see each other's point of view and helps
with any service that needs to be done.
The quadrant is the most comfortable, stable and productive
group. People tend to fall into quadrants, if they can, when they are
in a group of people. The larger groups — pentangle (5), sextant (6)
and septant (7) — are much more unusual. They also tend to break
down into a quadrant and something else: a quadrant and a person
who goes to sleep or leaves the room, a quadrant and a monad or a
quadrant and a triad.
The four positions of the quadrant describe the social roles most
people take when they are in a group. Everyone will have her
favorite quadrant position that she tends to fall into, with one or two
backup positions. Everyone is good at at least one of the positions.
Very few people can do all four positions well in any one lifetime.
You fall into your position in a group so automatically that you don't
even notice it.
If you want to get something done, start a business or project, it
is best to get together a basic core group of four to bring in quadrant
balance and energy. The most stable family units are either two
parents and two children or two parents and four children.
206
Part 3: Relationships with Others
Pentangles
A pentangle adds one more person (a "fifth wheel") onto a
quadrant, and that person takes the Eccentric position. The
Eccentric comes up with even more innovative and unusual ideas or
plans than the Love/Initiation person and throws a quirk into what
everyone is doing. Pentangles are very unstable and they don't stay
static very long, usually either dropping one person or adding a
sixth. It would be fun to go to a party in a group of five because of
the exciting and unusual energy, but it is an unstable working
group.
Sextants
207
MICHAEL: The Basic Teachings
Septants
The first six positions of a septant parallel those of a sextant,
while adding the more dynamic flavor of one of the seven roles:
Love/Sage: "Here's something that is going on. Why
don't we get involved in it?"
Knowledge/Scholar: A natural, investigative position for
Scholars.
Power/Warrior: Makes sure things get done.
Compassion/Server: Serves the group project.
Artisan/Eccentric: Comes up with new, innovative ideas.
King/Integrator: Leads the work out into world on a large
scale.
The seventh position in a septant corresponds to Priest and is
known as the Goad position. This position adds spiritual energy
and religious/philosophical context to whatever project the group
undertakes. The person in this position will be concerned with how
the group can best grow, learn, connect and be good members of the
universe with the work they are doing.
Although each position corresponds to a role, there need not be
seven people of different roles to make up a septant. A Sage might
do Knowledge position, for example, if Love is already taken, or a
Server easily could work in the Power position.
Septants will work on projects that benefits mankind on a large
scale. It is not often that a septant forms, although they will be more
common as the world shifts towards Mature Soul consciousness.

Afterword
If you have read to this point in the book, you have probably
found the body of this information at least interesting. The question
that comes up now is how do you apply the Michael Teaching to
your life?
The first place to start is by determining your role and
overleaves. Study the overleaf chart on page 212. Where do you
think you fit in? Mark your most likely choices and try them on fora
week to see how comfortable they feel. If you want to know your
role and overleaves with more certainty, there are two possible
methods for getting feedback about them.
1) Get in touch with the Michael Educational Foundation or The
Michael Connection (see Appendix, page 233) to find out how to
contact a Michael channel. The Michael Educational Foundation's
purpose is to provide consistent, high-quality information as a
resource which will assist people in their personal development. The
Michael Connection exists to support those who wish to use the
Michael Teaching to become more effective players in the game of
life.
2) Get a copy of The Essence and Personality Profile. This test
was developed by Michael teachers to help you determine your own
overleaves. When tested against Michael channels it was found to
have a 90% degree of accuracy — or at least degree of agreement

separateness.
Neptune body type/influence: One of the three secondary body
influences. Governed by the hypothalamus. Dreamy and unworldly.
neutral: Taking no stance. Holding the space, observing what is
happening, making no judgement. Taking neither a positive nor a
negative stance.
observation: One of the seven modes Essence can choose to use
for a lifetime. The assimilative mode. After seeing clearly,
observation slides to one of the other modes in order to act. Looking
before you leap.
Old Soul: The fifth of the five ages of soul perception experienced
on the Physical Plane. Old Souls put their attention on spiritual
growth and begin to gradually detach from the Physical Plane. Old
Souls are concerned with the perception of the greater whole of
which we are all part, teaching what they know to others and
learning the ultimate lesson of agape.
ordinal: Dealing with life on a more one-on-one level. Quieter and
more withdrawn.
overleaves: The elements of personality which Essence chooses
each lifetime which overlay, mask, or modify its essential nature
(i.e., the role, frequency, energy balance and particular past
experiences). These elements are goal, mode, attitude, chief feature
and centering. Although body type is not an overleaf, it has a
similar, if somewhat lesser, effect on Essence.
parallel universe: Universes which co-exist in the same space
but in different space/time continuum than this one and which are
subject to the same laws. A new parallel universe spins off at each
major decision point of each individual's life. (Each lifetime contains
only about four or five of these decision points.) Thus all the
possibilities of each personality may be played out. There are
billions of parallel universes existing at the same time, but all are
part of the Tao.

re-evaluation: One of the seven goals Essence can choose to use
for a lifetime. The ordinal goal on the inspirational axis. Limits the

universe, Essence chooses one of the following seven roles from
which to experience its lessons when it undertakes a circle of
experience: Server, Priest, Artisan, Sage, Warrior, King or Scholar.
Sage: One of the seven roles Essence can choose to use for an
entire circle of experience. The exalted role on the expressive axis.
Sages express, entertain and disseminate information.

and reliability. Classic type: Uncle Sam, Abraham Lincoln. The
exalted body type on the inspirational axis.
Scholar: One of the seven roles Essence can choose to use for an
entire circle of experience. The assimilative role. Scholars study and
assimilate knowledge.

self-destruction: One of the seven chief features Essence can
choose to use for a lifetime. The ordinal feature on the expressive
axis. Fear of worthlessness. Feeling too unworthy to exist and,
therefore, taking action which could lead to the end of one's
existence.
self-karma: An intense challenge Essence provides for personality
to work on during a lifetime, e.g., a weight problem, poor health or
an inability to have good relationships. Others can be included in the
scenario of a self-karma, but they will not be involved.
self-validation: Verification of lessons or truths for one's own
self. No lesson can be learned without self-verification or validation.
sentient race: A species that has developed the capacity to use the
intellectual part of the Intellectual Center, i.e., they can think about
their ability to think.
separateness: The illusion of the Physical Plane that each Essence
is individual and disconnected instead of a small part of the greater
whole.
septant: A group of seven. This group rarely forms, but when it
does it works on projects which benefit mankind on a large scale.
The seven positions correspond roughly to the seven roles:
Love/Sage; Knowledge/Scholar; Power/Warrior; Compassion/
Server; Eccentric/ Artisan; Integrator/King; and Goad/Priest.
Server: One of the seven roles Essence can choose to use for an
entire circle of experience. The ordinal role on the inspirational axis.

affection.
seven year cycles: Essence reaches a new stage of lessons every
seven years on the Physical Plane. These cycles correspond
generally to changes in the physical body.

Essence Role ‘Tapes
Your Role reflects your deepest essence. However, it can be obscured by who you think you ought to be.
Here are some statements that reflect styles of being in the world. You may identify with more than
one of them. This can be because you were conditioned in childhood to be a way that is different from
who you truly are. What we are looking for is who you are beneath the social fabric or veneer.
By listening to these tapes you will learn about yourself and how to relate to other roles more
effectively and compassionately. By listening to more than just your own Role Tape you will learn to
recognize and understand the roles of your friends and loved ones.
