Grade 5 – Math – Place value (up to 1 crore) – Lesson Plan

Lesson Vision

Objective –
SWABT identify place value of digits.

Assessment & ESR –


Write the place value of the underlined digit:

i) 3,57,831
ii) 27,45,831
iii) 5,74,90,301
iv) 7,32,834
v) 42,789

What –
The place value is the position of each digit in a number. The place value of digits is determined as ones, tens,
hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands and so on, based on their position in the number. For example, the place
value of 1 in 1002 is thousands, i.e.,1000.

Why –
Knowing place value will help me use money.

How –
• Write O, T, H, Th, T Th, L, T L, C above the number from right to left.
• What is the underlined digit?
• Which place is the digit in?
• What is the value of this digit?

Connection to C’s –
Critical thinking – Students are going to think how the position of the digit and its value are connected.
Lesson Method

Opening – 5 mins
Teacher Actions –

• I have to pack 30 biscuits into separate packets. What are the different possible ways that I can do it?
• Raise silent hands to answer.

Student Actions –
• Students will raise silent hands to answer.
• 1*30, 2*15, 3*10, 5*6, 6*5, 10*3, 15*2, 30*1

Teacher Actions –

• The place value is the position of each digit in a number.


• The place value of digits is determined as ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands and so on,
based on their position in the number.
• For example, the place value of 1 in 1002 is thousands, i.e.,1000.
• To demonstrate this, I will use arrow cards.

Student Actions –

• Students will actively participate in the class.


• They will raise hands to answer.
GP – 10 mins
Teacher Actions –

• Work with your partner and write the answers.


• You get 10 mins to finish this.
• If you need help raise silent hands and I will come help.
• For help, we can use the arrow cards.
