Grade 5 – Math – Complementary & Supplementary angles – Lesson Plan

Lesson Vision
Objective –

SWBAT find the complementary and supplementary angles for a given angle.

Assessment & ESR –

Find the complementary angle for the following angles:

Find the supplementary angle for the following angles:

What –

Complementary angles are a pair of angles that together make 90 degrees.

Supplementary angles are a pair of angles that together make 180 degrees.
Why –

Complementary and supplementary angles are the base for several geometrical proofs.

How –

 What is the given angle?

 To find the complementary angle, subtract the given angle from 90 degrees.
 What is the given angle?
 To find the supplementary angle, subtract the given angle from 180 degrees.

Connection to C’s –

Critical thinking – Students are going to find the missing angle keeping in mind the connection between
complementary angles and similarly for supplementary angles.
Lesson Method

Opening – 5 mins
Teacher Actions

 You get 2 mins to draw a picture using at least 2 acute, 2 obtuse, 2 right and 2 straight angles.
 After that you will share your pictures in your teams.

Student Actions
 Students are drawing the image as per the given task.
 They will share about it in their teams quickly.

INM – 15 mins

Teacher Actions –

 Complementary angles are a pair of angles that together make 90 degrees.

 Supplementary angles are a pair of angles that together make 180 degrees.
 Examples for each are demonstrated and explained using the material. To find the other angle we will
count the number of divisions in between (subtract to find the missing angle).

Student Actions –

 Students will observe the angles and make connections with the previous types of angles that they have
learnt so far. (They have learnt about right angle and straight angle already and now they will explore the
different combinations of angles that will form together to form right angles and straight angles)
 Students will actively participate in the class.

GP – 10 mins
Teacher Actions –

 Get into your usual teams.

 You will get 10 mins to solve the problems.
 Raise silent hands if you need help from me.
Student Actions –

 Students will work in their groups.

 They will raise silent hands if they need help.

IP – 10 mins
Teacher Actions –

 You will work on these problems individually, no helping each other.

 You will get 10 mins to do this.

 Find the complementary angle for the following angles:

 Find the supplementary angle for the following angles:

Student actions –

 Students will work on the questions given on the board.

 They will work alone.

Closing – 5 mins
Quick recap –

What are complementary and supplementary angles? How can we find them? Can you find some examples of
complementary and supplementary angles inside classroom or school?

Students will quickly answer the recap questions and we will close out.
