Detailed Lesson Plan in General Mathematics

I. OBJECTIVES

A. Evaluate function;
B. Solve problems involving function;
C. Develop cooperation during discussion and group activity.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Evaluating Functions

Reference: General Mathematics Learner’s Material First Edition
Material: Teacher-made visuals, laptop, chalkboard, and chalk
Strategy: Cooperative Learning and Exploratory
Values Integration: Cooperation and Competitiveness

III. PROCEDURE

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer

May I request everyone to please stand and let us thank (Everyone will stand up)
God with a simple prayer.

2. Greetings

“Good Morning, Class” “Good Morning, Sir”

Before you sit down, kindly pick up those litters around (The students will pick up litters
you, and arrange your chairs properly. under their chairs and sit properly)

3. Checking of Attendance

Class Secretary, is there any absentee for today? Class Secretary:

“There is no absent for today, sir.”
That’s Great! You have a complete attendance for
today.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Review
In order to refresh your memory from our past lesson,
let us have an activity, entitled Pick a Fries. Listen to the
mechanics.
1. I have here a big fries, each piece of this fries has a
question. I will select a student to come here in front to
pick a fries and answer the question written on it.
2. The process will continue until last piece of the fries
is answered.
Questions:
1. What is the relation where each element in the Student 1: It is a function sir.
domain is related to only one value in the range by some
rule?
Student 2: The input value is the x
2. What is the variable that is known as the independent variable sir.
variable or the input value?
Student 3: The output value is the y
3. What is the variable that is known as the dependent variable sir
variable or the output value?
Student 4: It is the vertical line test
4. What is the test used to identify if the given graph is a sir.
function?
Student 5: It is the domain sir.
5. What is the set of all possible values that the variable
x can take?

Excellent!

C. Motivation
Now, let us have an activity called “Function Machine”.
The class will be divided into three groups. Each group
will be given materials needed in this activity (manila
paper, marker and tape).
Listen to the mechanics.
1. I’ll be presenting a function machine and a set
of input to be process in the machine.
2. Every member will help each other to find the
output in the given machine. The first group to write and
raise the correct output will gain 1 point.
3. The group that will have the highest score will
be the winner.

+10

Questions:
1) If 7 goes into the machine, what number comes out? 1. 5(7)+10 = 45

2) If 13 goes into the machine, what number comes out? 2. 5(13) + 10 = 75

3) If -4 goes into the machine, what number comes out? 3. 5(-4) + 10 = -10

4) If 𝑥 goes into the machine, what comes out? 4. 5(x) + 10 = 5x + 10

5. 5(2x) + 10 = 10x + 10 or
5) If 2𝑥 goes into the machine, what comes out?
10(x + 1)

It is important because it can help
Right. What value have you developed while doing the us to finish the activity
activity? successfully.
Very good. Why is cooperation important in performing
an activity?

Exactly!

D. Lesson Proper
Evaluating Functions
What have you observed from the function machine Student:
activity? “Sir, We substitute the given input to
the variable x to determine the output.”

Great idea. The activity earlier has something to do with

our lesson for today which is Evaluating Functions.

Evaluating a function means replacing the variable in

the function, in this case x, with a value from the
function’s domain and computing for the result. To
denote that we are evaluating f at x for some x in the
domain of f , we write f (x).

In short, we substitute the given value of x to evaluate

the value of f (x) or y .

Example 1.
Evaluate the function f(x) = 5x + 3 if x = 1.5

Step 1: Substitute the x value to the function

f(1.5) = 5(1.5) + 3

Step 2: Perform the indicated operation and simplify

f(1.5) = 5(1.5) + 3
f(1.5) = 7.5 +3
f(1.5) = 10.5
The value of the function f(x) = 5x + 3 if x = 1.5 is 10.5
Student:
Example 2 (Volunteer student) Step 1: Substitute the x value to the
4 x+ 2 function
Evaluate f ( x )= if x = 11
x−3 4 (11)+2
f(11) =
11−3

Step 2: Perform the indicated

operation and simplify
4 (11)+2
f(11) =
11−3

46
f(11) =
8

23
f(11) =
4

The value of the function

4 x+ 2 23
f ( x )= if x = 11 is .
x−3 4
Very Good! Student:
Step 1: Substitute the x value to the
Example 3 (Volunteer student) function
Evaluate f ( x )=2 x 2−3 x +1 if x = 5 f(5) = 2(5)2−3( 5)+1

Step 2: Perform the indicated

operation and simplify
f(5) = 2(5)2−3(5)+1
f(5) = 2(25)−15+ 1
f(5) = 50−15+1
f(5) = 36
The value of the function
f ( x )=2 x 2−3 x +1 if x = 5 is 36.

Very Good!

E. Application

Let us all solve that through group activity.

Listen to the mechanics
1. Analyze and solve the given word problem by
evaluating the function.
2. Write your answer on the strip of manila paper
provided for your group.
3. The score of each group will be based on the rubrics.

Problem:Your group decided to sell snacks in the Answer:

nearby school. In one day, your group spends Php. 200 Step1: Substitute the value of x
for rent and Php 25 for each snack item you prepare. Given: 100 snacks
Your expenses in a single day can be expressed as the C( x )=25 x+200
function C( x )=25 x+200, where x is the number of C(100)=25(100)+200
snacks and C( x ) is your daily expenses in pesos. How Step 2: Perform the indicated
much is your expenses if the group prepare 100 snacks? operation and simplify
150 snacks? C(100)=25(100)+200
C(100)=2500+200
C(100)=2700
The daily expenses if the group
prepare 100 snacks is Php 2700.

Step1: Substitute the value of x

Given 150 snacks
C(150)=25(150)+200
Step 2: Perform the indicated
operation and simplify
C(150)=25(150)+200
C(150)=3750+200
C(150)=3950
The daily expenses if the group
prepare 150 snacks is Php 3950.

F. Generalization
Ask students to answer the following questions:
1. How can we evaluate a function given the value of Student 1:
x? By substituting and simplifying,
Sir.

2. What values have you develop during the discussion Student 2:

and activity? I developed the value of
cooperation, Sir.

3. Give a real life application of functions. Student 3:

Sir in using different machines.
There’s always an output and input.

IV. EVALUATION

Solve the following problems intelligently.

Alright your answers are all correct, kindly prepare 1 whole sheet of yellow paper and solve the
following problems.
1. Evaluate f ( x )=−2 x 2 +11 x+ 15
a. if x = -12
b. if x = 5
c. if x = -3

2. Let f ( x )= √ 15 x−5. find each value of the function.

a. f(2)
b. f(5)
c. f(-7)

V. ASSIGNMENT

1. The math club goes to an amusement park. Student tickets cost $10 each. Teachers go
for free. The bus costs $28. This is expressed as f (x)=10 x+28. How much is the cost of 12
students going in the amusement park?
2. Renting a canoe costs $10 plus $28 per day, which is expressed as f (x)=28 x+10.
What is the total renting cost of canoe in 3 days?
