Year 12 Homework Assignment 27.1
Year 12 Homework Assignment 27.1
1
1)A stone is thrown vertically upwards with speed 12 m s–1 from a point h metres above the ground.
The stone hits the ground 5 s later. Find
(a) the value of h, (3)
(b) the speed of the stone as it hits the ground. (3)
2) A car moves along a horizontal straight road, passing two points A and B. At A the speed of the car
is 15 m s–1. When the driver passes A, he sees a warning sign W ahead of him, 120 m away. He
immediately applies the brakes and the car decelerates with uniform deceleration, reaching W with
speed 5 m s–1. At W, the driver sees that the road is clear. He then immediately accelerates the car with
uniform acceleration for 16 s to reach a speed of V m s–1 (V > 15). He then maintains the car at a
constant speed of V m s–1. Moving at this constant speed, the car passes B after a further 22 s.
(a) Sketch, in the space below, a speed-time graph to illustrate the motion of the car as it moves from
A to B. (3)
(b) Find the time taken for the car to move from A to B. (3)
The distance from A to B is 1 km.
(c) Find the value of V. (5)
3) A particle P of mass 0.3 kg moves under the action of a single constant force F newtons. The
acceleration of P is (8i + 6j) m s–2 . Find
(a) the angle between the acceleration and j, (2)
(b) the magnitude of F. (3)
At time t seconds the velocity of P is v m s–1 . Given that when t = 0, v = 10i – 9j,
(c) find the velocity of P when t = 4. (3)
The airline’s recommended weight limit for each musician’s luggage was 45 kg.
Given that none of the musician’s luggage weighed exactly 45 kg,
(a)state the proportion of the musicians whose luggage was below the recommended weight limit.
(1)
A quarter of the musicians had to pay a charge for taking heavy luggage.
(b) State the smallest weight for which the charge was made. (1)
(c) Explain what you understand by the + on the box plot in Figure 1, and suggest an instrument
that the owner of this luggage might play. (2)
8) A teacher recorded, to the nearest hour, the time spent watching television during a particular
week by each child in a random sample. The times were summarised in a grouped frequency table
and represented by a histogram.
One of the classes in the grouped frequency table was 20–29 and its associated frequency was 6.
On the histogram the height of the rectangle for that class was 3.6 cm and the width was 2 cm.
(a) Give a reason to support the use of a histogram to represent these data. (1)
(b) Write down the underlying feature associated with each of the bars in a histogram. (1)
The total area under the histogram was 24 cm2.
(c) Find the total number of children in the group. (2)
t 5 – 10 10 – 14 14 – 18 18 – 25 25 – 40
Frequency 10 16 24 p q
(2)
(b) Estimate the number of people who took longer than 20 minutes to swim 500 m. (2)
(c) Find an estimate of the mean time taken. (4)
(d) Find an estimate for the standard deviation of t. (3)
(e) Find the median and quartiles for t. (4)
