1. The position vector of a particle P of mass 2 kg at time t seconds is given by

2. Two identical smooth spheres A and B , each of mass m , rest on a smooth horizontal table. Sphere A
is given an initial speed u so that it collides directly with sphere B . Given that the coefficient of restitution
between the spheres is e ,
(i) Determine the speeds of A and B after impact in terms of u and e . 5 marks

(a) A particle P is projected from a point O on a horizontal plane with speed u , at an angle of  to the

5. Figure 1 below shows a uniform lamina in the form of right angled triangle OAB with right angle at O , where

(i) Show by integration that the centre of gravity of the uniform lamina in the form of the sector OPQ is at

(a) A particle P of mass 1 kg lies on a rough horizontal table. Particle P is connected by means of a light
inextensible string passing through a smooth fixed pulley at the edge of the table to a particle Q of mass 2 kg .
The system is released from rest with Q hanging freely. Given that the coefficient of friction between particle
P and the table is 0.2, find:
(i) The acceleration of the system. 3 marks
(ii) The tension in the string. 2 marks

(iii) The magnitude of the force exerted by the string on the pulley.  Take as g 10ms 2  . 2 marks

(b) A particle of mass m kg is attached by a light inextensible string of length l m to a fixed point O . The particle

moves with constant speed v ms 1 in a horizontal circle whose centre is a point m vertically below O .

(a) A car of mass 1 000 kg , is subjected to a non-gravitational resistance to motion of 100  kv 2  N , where k
is a constant and v ms 1 is the speed of the car. When the engine of the car is working at a rate of 28 kW , the
maximum speed up a slope of inclination  to the horizontal where 20sin   1 , is 20ms 1 .
(i) Show that k  2 . 4 marks
Given that the engine of the car continues to work at the same rate, find the acceleration of the car when
its speed is 10ms 1 :
(ii) Up the slope of inclination  . 3 marks
(iii) On the level ground. 2 marks

(b) A spring is fixed at one end. When it hangs vertically, supporting a mass of 2 kg at the free end, its length is 3
meters. When the 2 kg mass is replaced with a particle of mass M , the length of the spring is now 2.5 meters.
Given that the modulus of elasticity of the spring is 10 N , determine the mass M .  Take as g 10ms 
