HEAT TRANSFER APPARATUS FOR

CONVECTION

Manufactured by:
2

Objective: To study the working of convection model

Apparatus: Model of convection model
Introduction:
Convective heat transfer is the transfer of heat between two bodies by currents of
moving gas or fluid. In free convection, air or water moves away from the heated
body as the warm air or water rises and is replaced by a cooler parcel of air or water..

Main parts of conduction

1. Temperature Indicator
2. on/off switch
3. Dimmer
4. Heater
5. Brass pipe
6. Temperature Sensor
3

Procedure
1. Start the apparatus
2. Increase slowly voltage with the help of dimmerstat
3. Note down the reading of temperature
Formula used
Heat transfer rate by convection
Q= hactual x A .x (Ts-Ta)
Where A= surface area = πdl
d= diameter of brass rod
l= length of brass rod
Ts= surface temperature
Ta= Ambient temperature
h= convective heat transfer coefficient
hactual =Q/A(Ts-Ta)

Observation Table

S.No Q Watt Ta=ambient Ts= surface

temperature Temperature
1 120 30.3 67.3

A= Surface area

l= 0.3 m

d= 0.032 m

A= πdl = 3.14x.032x0.3= 0.03014 m²

h= w/m²K

= 107 w/m²K
