1-Studying Laal Kitab System
See also Resources
There can not be any one single uniform technique to study any subject or for that
matter any text such that which could be uniformly applicable / useful to every
student. Each student develops his own method of study which suits him. However
there could be very general guidelines for handling a subject which could be used
by every one to their benefit. Therefore all I can share is the way we studied the
Laal Kitab, under the guidance of our Guru Pt. Bhooshan Priya ji.
[1] First and foremost thing to learn the Laal Kitab system is that one has to be
very well versed in Vedic astrology; with all aspects of it including the mathematics
of it. Knowledge of the traditional Vedic astrology is a must in order to be a good
Laal Kitab scholar. As a matter of fact, Laal Kitab was written for the astrologers
of that time, and there was no other system except the Vedic Astrology system
prevalent in those days.
[2] Start with Pt. Krishna Ashant ji’s books [a] Prishthabhoomi evam vyakhya, and
[b] trik bhavano ki gatha. These two books introduce the subject in its correct
perspective. These books also act as a link between the traditional Vedic astrology
and the Laal Kitab. Unless you start with these two books, you will not make a head
or tail of the Laal Kitab, and you might get frustrated and might leave studying the
book altogether.
These two books are a must like an appetizer before a sumptuous meal. Once you
have gone through these books, the ground is prepared for you to move to the
original text.
[3] After you have read the two books mentioned above, start reading the original
Laal Kitab books with the Hindi transliteration of the 1941 edition by Pt. Yograj
Prabhakar. During the first reading of this book, just read through the prose
text ; do not bother about the poetic couplets. Read through the couplets but do
not strain your brain to understand them.
The second reading should be done along with the poetic couplets too. At places it
will be difficult to understand what they mean. Do not get stuck up with them.
There are quite a few couplets which we have not been able to understand till
today, in spite of having read the book over a dozen of times.
[4] After having done at least two readings of the 1941 ed. Move on to the 1942
edition. Although there is no authentic transliteration of this edition available till
today, you have no option but to start with the Arun Sanhita. Better still that you
wait for a couple of months for an authentic version to hit the book stalls. If you
have some time in between, you might do a third reading of the 1941 edition.
While reading the first original text, you should inculcate the habit of taking down
notes. It will be useful to make your own list of the Kaarakaatwa of various planets
in various houses. Later you could use it as a ready-reckoner.
[5] 1942 book is a very important book. At places we have found it to be better
than the 1952 edition. This is a big book and will need a lot of time reading it. Go
ahead and read through the text and the couplets with equal attention. Most of
the couplets would be very similar to the ones you had already read in the 1941
edition, and therefore you will not find the couplets alien.
Even otherwise by now you will be familiar with the language and the style in which
the Laal Kitab is written.
It will be an easy reading, and interesting too. 1942 edition will be a book which you
might keep referring to very often. Therefore it needs the utmost attention. Two
complete readings are a must. Later on, rather much later, you will be flipping
through the book more often than you can ever imagine.
[6] Now is the time to move on to the 1952 edition. This is the last and the most
exhaustive editions of the Laal Kitab. Currently only Arun Sanhitaa version is
available; but by the time you would come to read it, an authentic version might hit
the book stalls.
Except for the grammar portion of the book, the rest of it will be very familiar to
you. In the beginning leave the grammar portion, if you try understanding it you
might get frustrated and might develop an aversion to the book. Just read through
the rest of the book. By now you will not only be familiar with the language, the
style and the idioms of the book, you would also get familiar with the system of
delineation.
Get to the grammar portion at the end. By now you would have understood what the
Laal Kitab is all about. Grammar portion is one section which is not only poorly
written, it appears to be a haphazard attempt. Nothing is systematic about it. We
have not been able to understand a very large portion of it till today. But never
bother about it. The portions you do not understand leave them, because you can
handle the horoscopes even without having to understand those portions. You can
always fill in the gaps with your knowledge of the Vaidik astrology.
This is true for the entire Laal Kitab system. If you want to be a successful Laal
Kitab scholar, you may have to keep drawing from the knowledge of the Vedic
astrology more often than you can imagine. Most of the contemporary problems can
not be understood or ‘samadhan’ suggested without the help of the Vedic astrology.
[7] The 1939 and the 1940 editions should be studied at the last. By this time you
will be able to determine for yourself what to study and what not to study.
[8] About this time you can also read various books written on the Laal Kitab
because you will be able to discern the good from the bad.

The first part of this great treatise contains the principles and Sutras for
interpretation of horoscope, termed as "Vyaakaran". The birth chart of an
individual is prepared like the traditional Paraashar principles, but the only
important difference is that the Raashi are not considered or taken into account
for predictive astrology and, therefore, the digits indicating the Raashi in a
traditional birth chart are scrapped. Secondly, for predictive purposes the
ascendant is treated as the first house and it is regarded as the house of the first
Raashi, ie Aries and counting progressively in a sequence up to the 12th house being
that of Pisces.
[1] In the LK system it is the Bhaav [house] which is important and not the Raashi.
[2] Therefore the Upaaya are to be done according to the placement of the planets
in the house and not in the Raashi.
[3] The Upaaya are done only if it is verified and made certain that a planet is
acting malefic. There would be no use of doing an Upaaya for a planet which is
already behaving like a benefic.
[4] Lal Kitab does not consider any planet as inherently malefic or benefic. Each
planet can give benefic or malefic results. Therefore the Upaaya depends on the
nature of the planet.
--------------------------------------------------------
There are two types of Upaaya, one is for your birth chart which are permanent in
nature, and second one is on the basis of year chart wise (Varsh Phal).
(1) Birth chart - there are two types of planets in chart, one for which results are
fixed (Graha Phal waley) like Saturn in 10th house etc etc. For these types of
planet no Upaaya are available in system. You have to live with these planets
results.
(2) Second one are Raashi Phal waley where it says you can take advantage of
benefit of doubts, ie Saturn in 9th house.
This the main nerve of system. Say, Sat is in 10th house in birth chart which is
Mooltrikonasth and is of Graha Phal means you do not require any Upaaya for this.
Know if he comes in house no 8 in Varsh Phal, then you must be requiring Upaaya to
control its bad effects. Majority of problems lie in Varsh Phal as it is a temporary
factor of one year and 43 days.
Next there are plenty of reasons where your good stars also start giving bad
results, like if Sat is good but persons drinks alcohol, or your Moon is good but you
give charity of milk etc or your Sun is in 11th house but the person eats non-veg
etc etc. For these type of problem where the star was good but it is giving bad
effect due to your Karm LK recommend theory of "Pitra Rin". LK says you cannot
completely change the effect of your stars either you make your self strong to
fight its bad effect or you change your route so you cannot come face to face with
problem.
One more thing the Bhed (secret) of LK lies in itself only. Say one person's birth
chart says that he cannot have male child, "I said birth chart", then search for his
year chart (Varsh Phal) and find out in which year Ketu is well placed and it can
bless the Jaatak with male child, because LK says... bury "Phal ko tabdeel karnaa
Insaanee taaquat ke baahar hogaa parantu...."
[From Lal Kitab Discussion Group, by Leekhas]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
In LK there are too many ways to make Kundalee, it can be through your house,
from your date of marriage, from birth of your male child etc, there is one more
method, where you can not find your date of birth but year will help you a lot in
getting remedies for present or future.

Which is the authentic Lal Kitab software to make horoscope?
*Lal Kitab doesn't require a comprehensive software. Though you can
use www.astrosage.com or www.mykundali.com for making Lal Kitab kundalee. In my
opinion, any software is good enough, if one has basic understanding of Lal Kitab.

About Planets
Mercury - Birds are Kaarak of Mercury, so feed them as often. He is the Lord of
Asc and 10th House, so it is always good to appease him, as the Lord of Asc and
Lord of the 10th House of profession,
Bathroom toilet belongs to Raahu and wall belongs to Saturn, is this right?
what is your point of view about Saturn in 6th house and bathroom constructions?
One person reported that he had a death in his house, but a LK astrologer said
"There is no such Yog in your family." Then he asked - "But if the person has
broken a wall, or broken or leveled high the floor of a bathroom, or buy a Bike or
car, it might be possible." He said "Yes"
Saturn placed in the 8th house, in Varsh Phal Kundalee or Janm Kundalee, along with any of its
enemy planet can cause such tragedy, if through our own actions we turn the Saturn into a malefic
[mandaa]. I will not consider the 6th house because the indication of a mandaa Saturn in the 6th will
be only the loss of Saturn Kaarak Vastu (thing). In the case you quoted he bought a car/cycle,
therefore I assume the Saturn + an enemy planet is placed in the 8th.
-- Varun Trivedi
According to Lal Kitab (192, Urdu, p 169) when the following Graha will be sitting in
any Khaanaa together, the opposite Khaanaa number will have the Mandaa (low)
effect and will last long. :-
Venus/Moon Antar-dashaa
Raahu/Shani Antar-dasha
This Dashaa can cause unexpected and sudden losses, accidents and problems with
law.
[1] Immerse in a river on any Thursday after sun set and before it gets dark 8
pieces of lead [a metal], once. Throw the pieces one by one into the water.
[2] Offer 10 Saabut Baadaam {whole almonds with shell} at any temple for 5 days
regularly. Each day bring back home from the temple , as blessed Prasaad , 5
almonds out of those offered by you. Keep them at home tied in a yellow or white
silk cloth any where in the East side of your house. No one should eat or throw
them away.
[3] Recite Mahaa Mrityunjaya Mantra as many times a day as you can. This is to
appease Saturn.
Jupiter/Mercury Antar-dashaa
It should not be bad, because Mercury is placed 2nd to Jupiter. But he may not be
as fruitful as it should be for two reasons. One that he is not as strong as he
should have been and secondly the two planets are inimical to each other.
Jupiter/Jupiter Antar-dashaa
This Antar-dashaa is normally bad,
[1] Recite Jupiter Beej Mantra 108 times daily
[2] Apply Haldee Tilak above navel daily (or in between eyebrows)
4-Planets in Lal Kitab
Shifting of a Planet
No planet can be moved or shifted at will. A planet can be established in a
particular house only if there is a Drishti path, or a path already laid out
to that house through an aspect. If a planet is to be established in the
4th house, or for that matter in any house, then it is essential to see that
there should be no enemy planet [of the planet being established] in that
house.
Sacrificial Goats
If Sun is afflicted by Saturn, the effects of the Sun will be affected.
The affliction of Sun will be passed on to Ketu - thus the affliction will
affect the results of Ketu. The affliction of Saturn will be spoilt. The
wife of the native die, or suffer from miseries or troubles.
Moon
Moon in 8th House of the Raashi - as it brings trouble and conflicts in the
family.
For two days when the Moon reaches the 8th during transit, you should offer a few
grains of rice at any temple.
Very important:
(1). Native must always respect her mother and never make her unhappy.
Any confrontation with her will be fatal.
(2). Native must never sell milk and water. It will have bad effects on his
children. He should rather offer/donate these things to others free of
cost.
(3). It is recommended that at the time of his marriage his wife should
bring Silver/Milk/Dariyaa ka paanee equivalent to her weight from her
parents house. Or these things should be already present in the natives
house. Chandar 7 will be a Lakshmi kaa Avataar if this is done.
Very important:
(1) Native should perform Shraadh of his ancestors or should donate on
their name.
(2) Gambling is strictly prohibited for the native.
(3) He should not become a jeweler, it will not suit him.
(4) He should never discontinue the water source in his house. And should
not built house after closing the well.<
Please read the above conditions carefully and decide your self the
position of Moon in your chart.
Afflicted Saturn and Moon
Saturn causes addiction and a weak Moon can not resist the temptation of
the drugs, hence this condition of this young man. Therefore the mother
should do these Upaaya on behalf of her son after a mental resolution
that she is doing these Upaaya for and on behalf of her son:
[1] Offer 10 Saabut Baadaam {whole almonds with shell} at any temple for
5 days regularly. Each day bring back home from the temple , as blessed
Prasaad , 5 almonds out of those offered by you. Keep them at home tied
in a yellow or white silk cloth any where in the East side of your house. No
one should eat or throw them away.
[2] Keep high up some where in the West corner a bottle of liquor.
[3] Immerse in a river 39 green glass bangles, once. It will be better if
the green color is that of a parrot.
[4] Recite the Beej Mantra for Saturn at least 108 times a day.
Jupiter
Jupiter is in 4th House, so it is very good, benefic and exalted.
Saturn is weak and negative, Moon will be the weak and negative because
of aspecting the Saturn. When Moon aspects the Saturn - result is
detachment. Is not being married the Saturn and Moon weakness?
In your natal horoscope [Janma Kundalee] the Saturn is placed in the 12th house and the Moon is
placed in the 7th house. Neither of them aspects the other. In the 50th year Varsh Phal kundali,
the Moon placed in the 5th does have an aspect on the Saturn placed in the 9th but it will have
nothing to do with delay in marriage. In this case the Moon will keep your Saturn cool. Saturn is
Lagnesh therefore by and large you are not likely to get angry on small matters. Yes had Saturn
been aspecting the Moon then there could have been a possibility of slight detached attitude
because then the Saturn would have affected the Moon
--------------------------------
The 12th house denotes 'Moksh' salvation. Saturn placed there will drive a person towards
spirituality. It will make the urge to know the Supreme, all the more intense. Saturn here denotes
the inner self and its struggle to achieve 'Moksh'. This journey to 'Moksh' will not be easy. And
may be because of this you might be feeling a little restless, as if there is some thing you have to
complete and accomplish and you are not able to. But on the whole it is a good thing in the final
analysis. Saturn here helps you towards the final goal in life; the final goal of being remembered to
have done some thing important, to have achieved some thing important.
Precautions :
[1] do not create smoke in the house or if there is no route for the smoke to get out.
[2] Should have good relations with wife's brother { saale }
[3] Should not have a cat as a pet
[4] do not hurt or ill treat a sweeper
[5] do not let the drain water accumulate near the house.
[6] do not change the place of the toilets
[7] do not light fire under the staircase.
[8] do not get only the roof redone.
[9] do not allow the drain to go down under the threshold.
[10] do not become a false witness
Bhooshan Priya
It could also be possible that Ketu was acting as a scapegoat for Jupiter.
You antagonized the Kaaraks of Jupiter which in turn passed on its
problem to Ketu.
--If Ketu is in House No 7, he also inspires Jaatak to tell lies and this
habit hinders Jaatak's progress. If it is like that he should never make
false promises.
--If Shani is in House No 12 the Jaatak suffers from telling lies or eating
Joothaa food.
Aspects
Every planet can aspect 7th from it's house. Also there is 100% aspect
which is applicable only in case of 1st to 7th house and 4th to 10th house.
IMO 100% aspect is given precedence over 7th aspect of planets.
(1) Planets in the 1st house have 100% Drishti on planets in house 7th.
"Jaisee Taasir aspecting planet kee hai Waisaa hee prabhaav aspected
planet per hogaa, Na ki dekhe jaane vaale Bhav par."
In the same way planets in 7th House will aspect planets in 1st house.
"Jaisi Haalat kaa Graha Bhaav No. 7 mein hai, uske Vipareet Prabhaav
Bhaav No. 1 mein posited planets ke maadhyam se bhaav No. 1 per padtaa
hai."
(2) Planets in Bhaav No. 2 aspects the Houses No 6 and 12 and planets
posited therein.
This is 25% aspects as per LK.
(3) Planets in 3rd House have 50% drishti (aspect) on Houses No. 11, and
9 and planets therein.
(4) Planets in 4th House have 100% aspect on Planets in 10th House.
"Taaseer Doodh (Milk) mein Khaand jaisee hogee."
But planets in the 10th House will follow the "Apne se saatavee Drishti"
rule.
"The nature of this aspect will not be like Doodh mein Khaand."
(5) Planets in 5th House have 50% Drishti on planets in 9th House.
"But if Moon is posited in this 5th house, he will aspect the planets in
10th with Ulatee Drishti."
(6) Planets in 6th House have 25% aspect on Planets in 12th House.
"If Sar is in 6th House, he will have Ulatee Drishti on planets in House
No. 2. It doesn't make any difference whether the planet in House No 2
is friend or enemy of the Saturn."
(7) Planets in 8th house have 100% Ulatee drishti on Planets in 2nd house;
but the planets of 2nd House have 25% drishti on Planets in 6th and 12th
Houses.
(8) Planets in 9th House will aspect planets in 3rd House as per 7th
aspect rule.
"Jaisee Prakriti Bhaav 9th ke Graha kee hogee uske Vipareet Bhaav 3rd
par us mein sthit graha ke Maadhyam se hogee.
Note: -- If Sun or Moon is in 9th House they will aspect the planets in
5th House with Ulatee Drishti.
(9) Planets in 11th House follow 7th aspect rule, they can't aspect planets
in 3rd.
(10) Planets in 12th house follow the 7th aspect rule - thus those planets
will aspect the planets in 6th House.
Note: -- Mercury in 12th House will have Ulatee Drishti on Planets in 6th
House.
"Is Drishti kaa Kundalee ke sabhee Grahon par Ashubh prabhaav hogaa."
(2) Planets placed in 3rd House from a Planet - This is also called
"Achaanak chot kee Drishti", eg Planets in 1st and planets in 3rd house
have the same relationship.
"Ye ek doosre per achaanak chot karenge, chaahe aapas mein mitr hi Kyon
na ho."
4. 7th Aspect Rule (Aam Halat ki Drishti) - Every planet aspects his 7th
House and Planet(s) in it, e.g. (2-8),(3-9).
(b) In rest of the cases - "Drishti apne se saatave ghar ke grah per na
hokar, dekhe jaane wale Bhaav ke Kaarkon (significators) per, dekhne
waale grah ki apanee taaseer se Ulatee padatee hai." eg "In Varshphal
Kunlee, suppose Venus falls in 6th and Mercury falls in 12th house. This
can produce benefic results regarding the married life of sister.
5. Takaraav kee Drishti - "Ek Ghar mein sthit Graha apne sthaan se 8th
Bhaav mein sthit graha ko Takkar Maarataa Hai."
6. Buniyaadee Drishti (Aspect on 9th House) - A planet in a house has
aspect on the planets 9th to it. This is a beneficial aspect.
6-Planets-Mercury
If the line of mind and the line of life are separate in the beginning and the line of
mind is not curved towards the mount of Jupiter, then the Jaatak may not get
comfort from the father; it does not necessarily mean that the father will die
early, there could be other reasons for not getting comfort from the father.
As a matter of professional ethics an astrologer should not touch upon this topic in
the first place. Even if the astrologer notices some such anomaly in the horoscope,
and has confirmed it through other indications, then only he should, if at all, use a
very subtle way to convey it.
LK for Budh 2 says "Tota bole Pitaa bhaage" (chander 8 is "shart se baree kar
degaa"). There is no relation to Jupiter mentioned.
Totaa bole.. The Lal Kitab has prohibited keeping a parrot / sheep/ goat as a pet
for those who have mercury in the 2nd house. Bringing home a parrot would amount
to strengthening the Mercury. If some one brings home a parrot as a pet, then who
is the mercury going to adversely affect. There are two planets associated with
the 2nd house; namely the Venus [house owner] and Jupiter [Pakka house]. Since
the Venus is a friend of Mercury it is not going to adversely affect it, therefore it
is going to affect only the Jupiter, the father, hence the saying 'Totaa bole, pitaa
bhaage".
For this the Lal Kitab has advised the Upaaya of either Moon or Jupiter. A Moon
placed in the 8th will have an aspect of exaltation [uchcha] on the 2nd house. It is
this exalted aspect of the Moon which will be able to break this jinx.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
A Mercury placed at Dhan Sthaan could adversely affect the father in financial
terms and not in terms of threat to his life. 'pitaa ke haathon se dhan daulat kaa
asar mandaa hee hogaa' [ 1942ed]
There is no specification in LK, but since in whichever pot you burn these Kaudee,
throw it also there, so take he clay pot. Now the problem is how to burn Kaudees?
There is a very simple method of burning the Kaudees to ash. The Kaudees are
first crushed into bareek choora [small grains] in an Imaamdastaa / kharal and
then are burnt. Burning a whole Kaudee would take a lot of time, a lot of coal and
may be the whole day.
I have a doubt about it. You have written that Kaudee is the Kaarak of Budh, so if
Kaudee is ground in Imaamdastaa, will it still remain Kaarak of Budh?
Kaudi is a Kaarak of Mercury irrespective of its shape. The shape of Mercury is gol
[round] and we all know a Kaudee is not a round object. Therefore to my mind it will
still stay a Kaarak of Mercury even after being crushed.
[Varun Trivedi]
Have you heard about Shankh? Or do you know whose Kaarak it is? Where it is
found? How is it formed? If you know this, please tell what is the difference
between a Shankh and a Kaudee? Is it only that Shankh makes sound or is there
anything else too?
One can burn Kaudee by welding machine also. Put them in a clay pot (round) and
take them to welder and ask him to burn them, when he is burning them you should
also touch his hand as it is your Upaaya.
In fact somebody told me this Upaaya in the past to do like this - that I have to
burn Kaudee in an opened clay pot, over the Kachchaa Koyalaa, near the river bank.
Can somebody tell me how long Kaudee take to burn into ashes? [Kaudi- Budh,
River- Chandra, Coal: Shani, Mitti ka bartan: Budh]
Burning Kaudis and then immersing their ash into a river is what in Vedic Jyotish is
called an Anushthaan. This Upaaya is more than an Upaaya, it is an Anushthaan.
There is a slight difference between doing an Upaaya and doing an Upaaya like an
Anushthaan. Although the Lal Kitab does not prescribe the procedure to do this
Upaaya, but we Hindus, through our tradition, know how to do such Upaaya.
When an Upaaya is to be done like an Anushthaan, then traditions get added to it.
All such Jyotish Anushthaan where some thing is to be immersed in a river or
water, are normally done at the banks of a river, sea, lake or a Sarovar. If you
notice Pind Daan is also done at the banks of such water bodies. There are many
such Anushthaan which are done like that. That explains why it is advisable to burn
the Kaudis at the bank of a river itself. The best way to do it would be to crush
them into choora and then burn. At least I personally do not agree with the idea of
burning the Kaudis at home, either on a gas burner or through a welding machine.
By the way, kachcha koyala [lakadi ka koyala] is a Kaarak Vastu of Raahu, where as
Coal [patthar kaa koyalaa] is a Kaarak Vastu of Saturn.
[Varun Trivedi]
Mercury Well-placed
Toys are a Kaarak thing of Mercury they should be kept at home only if the
Mercury is well placed and that too in the North part/area of the house. If the
mercury is malefic then one should not keep the toys at home.
